Announcements / Changing your displayed name on the forum
« on: November 24, 2019, 09:15:56 AM »
One of the things that have been fixed on this forum from the beginning (2007) is that the users are not allowed to edit their displayed username (not their actual username - just what shows on the posts)

This always caused mayhem on the US site as some people would change their name every other day - some to political slogans etc.

Sorry that it has taken 12 years to trust you lot...

I ran the forum for my local IAM advanced motorcyclist group for many years (www.tvam.org) and still run the website. There I decided that members could only use their real names. I'm sure it contributed to a much more polite discourse.

So:

Go to "Profile" on the menu
Select "Account Settings"
Edit your displayed name

Please don't let me down here :)

Steve

PS: Having met quite a few of you, it would be nice to see a few real names - it's hard enough to remember sometimes!

Announcements / Email notifications
« on: October 17, 2019, 09:42:11 AM »
Hi all.

I've just had a note from my hosting company that the server has sent 77 emails in a very short time (and they suspect I have been hacked)

It seems that these are all new post notification emails which for some reason have been queued and all sent at once!

They have suspended my outgoing emails as a protection against their server being black flagged as a spam source.

I've told them the emails are OK and asked them to reinstate the service. In the meantime you may not receive your normal notifications. Sorry.

It also means that the new members won't get their welcome/password email :(

For those of us that weren’t allowed to stay up late enough to watch Monty Python, Spitting Image was the hard hitting satire of the 80’s

I see that it is back.

Personally, I can’t wait

Tricks & Tips / Fitting decals/stickers (by Menno)
« on: September 20, 2019, 10:12:38 AM »
Placing decals almost on a daily basis I would advise you to do as follows:

Take a atomiser or sprayer or what it is called in English... to spray water on plants.
Fill it with water.
Ad a drop of liquid soap. The kind you use to wash the dishes.
A drop is enough.
Shake.

Spray on tank.
Free the decal and keep it above the tank when doing so.

It will probably fall out of your hands -  that is ok - as long as it lands on the tank.
Remember - as long as the tank is wet and the decal has its sticky part free the tank is the best place to keep the decal (for instance when the phone rings).
Sticky part down -  that is

The water on the tank will make sure the decal will not stick permanently.
Now take the decal and place it how you want it.
You can take it off again and on again as often as you like.
But keep the tank wet.

The moment you are really satisfied you can leave it on.

Now take a credit card and push the water from underneath the decal.
Watch out for wrinkles when doing this.

Positioning:
750K2 Decal - 16 cm at the front measured from the bottom front corner, first pinhole (From the HONDA logo attachment) 4,6 cm straight up. Second pinhole 4,5 cm straight up. At the rear... now this is a bit difficult since those decals are all quite different. Some are longer than others, but watch out for this: the K2 tank has 2 'corners' where the decal should be placed in. The decal should not go over or UNDER(!) this bent.

One small thing though: decals are like bread; they have an expiring date.

Using old stickers (6 months or older) might leave them not sticking enough, leaving airpockets under the decal which will not go away.
Or the decal will stick immediately to the tank through the water. If the decal sticks to aggressive throw it away. It might damage the paint  when trying to correct the decal.
Ask the seller for a fresh decal.

Or even better:

BUY DIEGO'S DECALS!

(Best advice ever)

Announcements / Recent Spammer Registrations
« on: June 07, 2019, 09:28:27 AM »
We've had a rash of spammer registrations recently. Most are filtered out automatically by www.stopforumspam.com to which I (we) subscribe.

However, that database relies on forum owners reporting spammers, which, when added to the database results in all future registrations from that username, email or IP address are barred.
This has always worked reliably but the spammers have developed a counter whereby they register but don't post for a while (sometimes weeks) and by the time they are reported they have already made it onto loads of forums.

The upshot of this is a request from me for diligence by those who are on here every day.
If you see something suspicious* then please PM me as I will get it immediately. I'll then simply delete them and their rubbish.

* normally anything that has a load of links in it or stuff that isn't anything to do with SOHCs.

Announcements / New limits for attachments
« on: May 31, 2019, 03:12:01 PM »
Hi all

I have increased the limits for attachments as follows:

  • Attached image now 3Mb (was 2Mb)
  • Limit of 5 images per post unchanged
  • Limit of 6Mb per post scrapped (you can now add 5 x 3Mb if you like

This reflects a recent "upgrade" to less expensive server space :)

Other Bikes / Jota 120 (not Jota120...)
« on: May 10, 2019, 09:00:28 AM »

The first Laverda Jota 120 with the team that made it. L to R Brian Farmer, Richard Slater, Steve Winterton and yours truly.
Gas flowed, 3:1 exhaust, Astralite wheels, Brembo floating discs with 48mm calipers and a one piece seat and tank unit. A veritable missile in its day.

Anorak's Corner / Primary School Science
« on: March 15, 2019, 07:45:05 PM »
Anoraks only...

My wife teaches year 4 primary (9 year olds)

Next week they are doing “rust”

I’ve been asked (= told) to find a load of experimental kit:

Steel nail
Zinc plated nail
Stainless nail
Copper nail
Brass nail
Wrought iron nail

These are to be subjected to immersion in the following:

Rainwater
Carbonated water
Salty water
Vinegar
Lemon juice

I can probably dig up most of them as screws or bolts, but copper nails?

Would anyone like to predict what 30 year fours will find?

Misc / Open / What do you own 2019? (Main bike only please)
« on: January 11, 2019, 07:17:04 AM »
I've updated this for 2019 - I suspect there are even more 400s on here now than there were last time...

Please only vote for your "main" bike, be it a rider or a restoration. It would be very easy to skew the result if you have a barn full of bikes (like James  ))

Edit - polls don’t show on Tapatalk. I don’t know why but will try and find out.

A new member recently emailed me and called my forum "a joke"

Before I delete him, just thought I'd check as to whether this actually works...  I can't test it myself as the admin rules are different.

Out & About / Unit 1 Motorcycles, Wickham Market, Oct 18
« on: October 07, 2018, 10:11:56 AM »
This place is just a few miles up the road from my mother-in-law's place in Ufford, Woodbridge but I've never been there before.

After dropping her off on Satrday morning for a flu jab at the doctors' in Wickham Market, I drove down there and introduced myself.

First surprise - walked in and David Silver was standing there with a cup of coffee!

We chatted about bikes (as you do)

They have some really nice stock - said they were short of Hondas at the moment (just one 400/4) but had half a dozen 916s coming in soon...

Only had 20 mins so took some photos and promised to go back next time I'm in the area.

Long time since I've seen an RRN 'Blade
