CB350/400 / Nice 400/4 Shot from book
« on: May 09, 2014, 08:29:55 AM »
I found this scan on my PC last night.
I am sure I have posted it before yonks ago, but for any new members here it is again.
Buy that book ... it's a wealth of info!!

This book I bought when it came out in the 1980's

It's a 'must have' for any Classic 60's - '70's Honda bike nut. Sometimes goes for silly money but sometimes at bargain price. Definitely worth buying if you can get one at a reasonable price guys !!

There will be loads of useful tips on engine rebuilds etc so well worth following. They visited us today to collect the first batch of parts and take loads of photo's of our project and parts for background to theirs. — at David Silver Spares"

Misc / Open / Metallic Match for Candy Ruby Red Paint
« on: May 06, 2014, 07:55:17 AM »
Hi,

My CB750K0 was painted in Candy Ruby Red by Andrew Parnaby (near Tadcaster) in 2011. He does a superb job but obviously not cheap. My '69 CB250SS (K0) needs painting soon and is two tone white  and Candy ruby red. I don't really want to go over the top, cost wise, on painting it and I do know someone locally who does paint. Anyone know if there is a modern metallic paint shade that closely matches Candy Ruby Red. I went on a cruise last month and spotted a Renault in Israel that was painted in a red which was remarkably similar. Yes I know I won't have that magic 'toffee apple' finish but I just want to get the bike finished. The tank does not have pin stripes or decals so not sure if it needs clear coat. Also in 1986 I  foolishly painted my '75 400/4 (pillion pegs on swinging arm model) in F2 Antares Red not Varnish blue. Anyone know a modern colour to match 'Varnish Blue'. I don't want to have 3 red bikes and in 2014 prefer the original blue !!

Other Bikes / CB250K0/K1/K2 email 'forum'
« on: May 02, 2014, 06:19:29 AM »
Hi ,

A few of us who are restoring really early CB250/350's 1968-1971 SS (K0) & K2 (also K1 only CB350 and in the USA) have started an email forum mainly to swap/sell ideas/parts/literature/services etc. Anyone interested just PM me and I will include you on the email list. I know there is HondaTwins.net, which is excellent, and I am indeed a member and a regular contributor there but there are a lot of 'UK/Europe' only features on these bikes and they are pretty rare now with the usual 'K0' hard to find items.
I will still post on here as 'other bikes', anything of interest that I pick up, I am not deserting you, promise!! :)

The guy from R & S Plating said the other day "Not really anything I can say, these forums are used by people who would rather moan via a keyboard than contact us direct".
Does he have a point? I bought a pair of carbs from DK  recently, which turned out to be rubbish and I had a good old moan on here but didn't phone them first. But people on here recommended I just contact them to explain, which I did and they sent me another set and said I could keep the original set and couldn't apologize enough. I just bought a CB350 toolbox from them and they sent a battery frame instead!!  This time I just phoned them and they are sending the right part and again allowing me to keep the wrong part they sent.
BTW have you seen the stuff DK pack their parts in, a kind of  finely shredded plastic that has to be the messiest stuff ever. Oh dear moaning into my keyboard again    ;D ;D

Misc / Open / Anyone know how an aquablaster works
« on: April 27, 2014, 07:41:01 PM »
I am currently working 3 days /week for a company who make high pressure (160bar) water hydraulic pumps/motors and valves and air motors. We were badly flooded in December (1.2 metres of river / sea water) and the MD is buying a SH bead blaster to try to recover some of the rusted carbon steel components (the water hydraulic components are made from 316 ss so OK). It occurred to me that since we have two massive air compressors for testing air motors and make high pressure water pumps, it may be possible to make an aquablaster so that I can clean up all of my bike parts!! Anyone know how they are constructed? They are really expensive even second hand (around £10k compared with a bead blaster , around £2k).

Misc / Open / Honda Service Bulletin No.004 1967
« on: April 25, 2014, 12:24:32 PM »
All my Honda manuals from 60/70's talk about Service bulletin No. 004 regarding change to ISO threads in 1967.
Someone on SOHC4 US site pointed me here which looks like the same thing.

Misc / Open / Breath of Fresh Air for Used Parts (in Germany)
« on: April 11, 2014, 01:21:45 PM »
After buying all sorts of overpriced junk or mis-described used parts on Ebay UK, I have finally found someone who honestly describes his parts, charges a fair price and has reasonable delivery charges to the UK (used MyHermes for my purchases).

Just bought a few parts from him for my 250K0 and again spot on service and quality parts. You can tell by the way he carefully  cleans and packs everything, the type  of guy he is. He  can be found here and his name is Frank Dorsch, in Germany. ( Otzberg-Classics).

http://stores.ebay.co.uk/jap2wheelz/

For instance look at this, he measures the selector forks so you can compare with the service limits in the manual.

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/CB350-Four-Schaltgabeln-shift-forks-/150921910601?pt=DE_Motorradteile&hash=item2323a59949

There are a few people on Ebay UK I have used (e.g. FreddytheFatFrog), who have supplied good parts but they are few and far between in my experience. Or is it just me who has been unlucky!! Ebay USA used to be generally OK but the delivery/import/Parcelforce charges just don't make it viable any more.

Misc / Open / Frame with no VIN
« on: March 28, 2014, 09:55:06 PM »
I have a spare '69 CB250 SS (K0) frame. I bought the bike for parts ages ago for my resto and don't need the frame but it's got no VIN stamped into the headstock. I have the V5 for the bike in my name and there is a VIN number on it. If someone used this on a bike would it ever get an MOT?. I reckon it must have been crashed early on and the frame replaced and never stamped, when repaired. Later Hondas in the UK like the 400/4 had an aluminium VIN plate (as used earlier in the US) in addition to the stampings in the headstock but I don't think you can get one for the early 250.

Misc / Open / 750K0 rolled rim discussion on SOOC
« on: March 16, 2014, 07:43:13 AM »
Hi,
There's a discussion on the SandcastOnly site on this auction for a 'rolled edge rear rim' a very rare and elusive part

www.http://cb750sandcastonly.com/smf_forum/index.php?topic=1197.0

http://www.ebay.com/itm/HONDA-1969-1970-CB750-CB-750-Sandcast-early-rolled-rear-rim-wheel-Sandcast-/121295733613?pt=Motorcycles_Parts_Accessories&hash=item1c3dca036d&vxp=mtr

I am member there even though I am only a humble K0 owner but they warmly welcomed me and they are a really serious bunch of enthusiasts.
Don't want to add a comment to this post as they will probably get offended and shoot me down in flames but my opinion is that you would be dicing with death trying to use something like this, no matter how much expert resto was done on it. Some of the stuff seems madnes to me like fitting parts, which were Honda safety recall items, just for originality. I suppose for a museum piece yes but as a rider, well it sounds wrong to me.
