CB500/550 / 550 K3 520 chain ?
« on: October 09, 2022, 07:27:15 AM »
Hi to all members,

Long time since I've been on the forum, lots of other bikes and mundane things to sort out !

Does anyone know of any sprockets that are a straight fit on the 550 but are for 520 chain size ? I am about to replace chain and sprockets on mine and would like the smaller (lighter and generally cheaper to purchase) 520 chain,

If there's no straight fit sprockets in 520 size I'll stick with 530 even though it's bigger and heavier than a bike of this power needs

Any help much appreciated,

Regards to all
Ozzy

Don't want to be a scaremonger but....
If you've ever had a gearbox seize while riding a bike you don't take any chances,

I had just returned from a high speed run on a kettle when the gearbox seized doing 30mph, I managed to stop the bike without crashing and thanked whoever is looking after me,

That was due to worn bushings inside the gears, two gears jammed,

I would be stripping it

Sorry to be negative but I think I was very lucky,  ten minutes earlier doing over 100mph it could have been very nasty

The email address for Paul Gabor is mybluebike2004@yahoo.com

He responds quickly and is a pleasure to deal with, the rubbers that you will receive are not quite as good looking as genuine ones but not noticeable when fitted, not much choice anyway, the ones from Germany on Ebay are twice the cost and I believe are from Paul

Re the carb to inlet box rubbers, I managed to get in touch via the us forum and email with the man who is manufacturing replacements, he is very helpful, I got mine delivered in about a week and less than $50 including postage, I'll get his email when I finish work,

PS I am having very similar problems with my bike, I am about to clean the pilot jets for the fourth time which does get the bike running ok for a while, I am on the lookout for a set of alternative carbs as these PD carbs seem prone to issues (odd as they are not particularly complex carbs)

Yes, early CB650, I have one on my 550 with matching speedo due to having a CB650 camshaft fitted

Interchangeability / 750 carbs on 550 K3 ?
« on: June 21, 2020, 10:43:27 AM »
It's a question rather than an answer,

Has anyone done it ? I am looking for alternatives to the horrible PD carbs on my K3 550, I have read somewhere that the 750 carbs are a good upgrade, one because they work better and as my bike is 605cc with a 650 cam it will benefit from the bigger carbs (+2mm ?),

Advice on the possibility, any pitfalls and the best type of carbs to look for is appreciated,

Thanks

I changed crankcases on my Majesty Yamaha and just sent in the V5 with a new engine number and colour change, it came back in a couple of weeks with the new information, easy as it could be

I treat myself to the latest tomtom rider, don't know what the model was but it cost about £400, I have used it twice, I prefer the old method of looking on a map for what looks a good route, writing down the road numbers and occasionally getting lost, I find that half the fun

What are they like for handling Julie?

One part I do need is a decent set of rear shocks, I have some Marzocchi Strada piggybacks in bits but they need seals and no one has them anymore.

I might have to buy a pair of these, I'd prefer something like Koni but again finding a set in great nick can be hard.

Hi oddjob,

I recently bought some second hand Marzocchi shock very cheap and took the chance that I would be able to strip and recondition them, after lots of searching I found a dealer in Italy that has lots of nos Marzocchi stock, his shop is called Tecnomotors, not sure of website address but I can find it,

Picture of rebuilt shock with new seal kit fitted, I also got some new Marzocchi decals from Ebay

I agree with Bryanj

My K3 has them on, I've done very little mileage on it and had the carbs in bits three times, it still doesn't run perfectly at all throttle openings, I am about to start looking for the 550F carbs

I love riding my one (550 K3), it's so relaxing to ride, I agree with Bryan that they do go ok but need revving, I love the name "gentleman's express" I think that is a perfect description, even my son (who is pretty quick at track days on a ZX6R) loves the Honda four, he calls it the armchair, great classic bike,

Hope you enjoy yours as much as I do mine

PS I have a few neodymium magnets and did use them to pick off the stubborn ones, I also got a magnifying glass and a pick to see if they were stuck fast, they weren't and with the magnifying glass you could see that it was the material of the guide and not the shim, all good now, all ready to rebuild, I'll get the barrel on Tuesday then finish off Wednesday (all being well, no unforeseen slip ups hopefully)

I checked all of the above and below (on the floor) they were missing,  now ordered so should be able to have it back running on Wednesday,

It doesn't surprise me with some of the work on this bike, it has a spurious exhaust system on it and the back brake lever hit the exhaust and the side stand wouldn't fit, I removed it completely, refitted it correctly and now the side stand is fitted and the rear brake lever doesn't touch the exhaust, hopefully nothing much left on this bike to surprise me !
