Well, you live and learn or more correctly you live, learn, forget and learn again !

Got the head stripped and all is well, valve guides are good, camshaft bearing surfaces very good, the bit that I have relearned is not to order the parts until it is fully stripped down as you never know what unexpected things might be needed, in this case three of the inner valve spring seats (shim washers) are missing, I could understand if all eight were missing, the builder might not know they are needed but to fit five and leave three out ? Or perhaps just remove and refit some valves but not check them all ? Well it goes against my thinking,

Well hopefully that's the last obstacle to the rebuild

All sorted thanks, genuine Honda on the way to me, going to take the head apart today and probably grind the seats and clean up the head, tempted to have a look at cleaning up the ports but knowing that it's easier to make things worse rather than better I'll leave it alone, not trying to make the bike much more powerful,  just a little more comfortable at motorway cruising speeds

No "Pontefract cakes" so I'll get some from a dealer, probably Silvers if they have them,

I've seen a few disasters with similar, I am very careful when building engines not to damage anything, there's only ever two ways to do something, either right or wrong

Ok thanks, I have a top set but was a little bit unsure about the quality of the stem seals, if they're usually ok I'll fit the ones I have,  I need some of those rubber puck seals, I'm guessing they will be genuine Honda from Silvers

(I had read a few negative comments re the stem seals but there could be reasons for that)

Apologies as it's probably been covered a hundred times but I want a recommendation for valve stem seals, I have a big bore kit to fit to my K3 550 and I am taking out the valves so need some stem seals, I want decent quality ones so that they are not leaking a few hours later, any advice on which ones to buy and where as I have read that some of the cheapest ones are suspect quality ?

M and P do some at a good price but there's no brand

Thanks in advance

CB350/400 / Re: Lacquer?
« on: May 17, 2020, 04:12:25 PM »
I recently painted my trials bike tank with non isocyanate 2K aerosol that the supplier (Ebay) claims is as good as proper 2K  I know it's not because my brother was a  car body repairer for 30 years but I have given it a go, the paint and the lacquer were both non isocyanate 2K but after leaving the job 3 days I splashed petrol on it and it marked the lacquer, I managed to polish it back up and I have left it two more weeks, it's definitely a lot harder so hopefully it's going to be petrol resistant now (as the manufacturers claim)
Re paint compatibility, my brother reckoned that proper 2K is compatible with almost any other paint and it is fully petrol proof once hard but you have the isocyanate problem, it can be really nasty stuff causing long term health problems I would only ever paint with it outside with a mask on and for short periods of time  (like a bike)

I retract my last post, I have seen both parts of the instruction to use thread locking, but...... I aren't lying, why would I?? 52 years including working for two dealers and all my life and I have never seen loctite on the damper rod bolt or had trouble removing it before,  now if everyone can stop trying to prove me wrong, I'll try not to get pissed off !!

I give up, usual forum diatribe

It says thread lock on the threaded part of the damper where the top lock nut fits, no reference to thread lock on the Allen screw that goes through the bottom of the slider into the bottom of the damper, the later fork doesn't have the lock nut on a threaded bar

Well I am amazed that I haven't seen it before in my 52 years of repairing bikes for myself and as an employee in two bike shops,  maybe the one that I have just done on the 550 was replaced with high strength thread locking by a.n.other whereas the original stuff is low strength and therefore comes undone a little easier, I of course know to try and crack the bolt while the forks are built up and to try and put more load on the spring in an effort to stop the damper spinning, there was absolutely no chance of that working, I had to take the spring out and then use an alloy tube onto the damper to get enough weight and friction to get it all the way out, first time I have had that much trouble just getting the bolt out, eh oh, you live and learn, all done and dusted now,

PS the fork strip and service was done because after the twin disc conversion that I carried out the forks were diving like Tom Daley so I have stripped and serviced them then rebuilt with the correct quantity of 15W fork oil, much better now with improved compression damping.

Strange, I must have just got the bikes that have been assembled on a Friday afternoon ?

Honda did similar from new

Really ? I have been working on bikes for 52 years and I have never seen it before, it made it a bastard of a job to stop the damper rod spinning while trying to undo the bolt, I managed in the end with an aluminium rod down the fork leg to stop the damper spinning while using an impact wrench to undo the bolt

Do you ever end up spitting feathers while working on the bikes ? It doesn't happen often, I am usually in my little corner of heaven in the garage working on the bikes with a pot o tea and classic rock on the radio but spending the morning stripping the 550 forks nearly drove me over the edge ! All due to the po loctiting the damper rod bolt in ! I've seen some stuff but that's a new one  !

A good friend of mine runs a motorcycle engineering company building engines for classic air cooled superbikes (one producing 185 hp!) and he uses IMD and tells me that he has used them some time and recommended them, that'sgood enough for me

Hi,

Has anyone fitted a Lithium battery to their SOHC bike  ? I have fitted lithium batteries to the NS400R and ZX6R track bike and I am very happy, my 550 has a modern regulator/rectifier fitted so should be OK on having a stable charge rate, unless anyone knows any reason why not ? I am a bit of a weight reduction obsessive with my bikes hence the lithium battery option.
