Don't get me started on milk deliveries. People next to us had milk deliveries. Only a few years ago. 5 in the morning...clink clink clink 'f'ing clink....when everyone else walked two streets along to the giant Tesco to buy their milk - that's progress! Lazy sods. You want milk delivered, buy a cow and keep the wretched noise down!

....prefer mooing? Yes, but when we mooo-ved to a rural village there weren't any cows. However, my neighbours two doors down like fresh eggs in the morning, so now it's the wretched cockerel at dawn every day 🙁!

Memories of jumping out of the back of the Bedford CF van before it had come to stop with a hand crate in each hand have been brought back to when I was a loon! I remember getting braver and braver until I over cooked it and yes there was glass and milk and me lying on the road. Had to endure the wrath of the boss man then who was the driver. The other thing I remember clearly was Sat delivery was double order and money collection day too. In them days (early seventies) customers rather than get a knock on the door would just leave the money on the doorstep either in an envelope or just loose change in empty bottles. Just seemed to be the norm then and never heard of any money going missing. Must be about 30 years since we lost the glass bottles here, not much “chink” with plastic!😂 Changed days!😳😁

Not that it matters but it was actually Bedford CA.

Always surprised me as a kid that the birds knew there was something to eat in a non natural container.

We've seen a big resurgence in small birds here in our immediate surroundings, with a "reduction" in squirrel population the bird eggs survive.

Although last week a sparrow hawk came and took a small bird as it tried to get desperately into some bushes right outside rear door of house.

Think it was sparrow, as primarily brown with banding on tail feathers, and of that size too. Considerable speed and dexterity in hunting and quite something to watch.

A fair few owl and woodpecker in wider tree cover around this location.

My mum is 89 and still insists on putting out cash for her milkman. She puts out notes for more or less milk as well. It must drive the milkman nuts. Most of his customers pay by direct debit but mum refuses to do that! 😂

Great that people can still do that Gareth, although yes might be a nuisance for the dairy. We had our milk delivered always until roughly 14 months ago, just realised we were actually paying double what we can get it from the local supermarket. Costs have to be met yes of course for the service but we are at a shop most days anyway.

My granny used to get milk delivered in a plastic bag. The bag then sat in a purpose-made jug, corner was cut off and it poured from there.  Worcester area - odd lot down there.🙂

On my old foot beat in Derby West was a Co-op garage where all the Milk Floats were charged up overnight.
Believe it or not an empty  Milk Float would be occasionally stolen then dumped on the nearby Mackworth Council Estate.

Sounds about right knowing the "estate" Ted.  ;)

It's now colloquially known as Smackworth for obvious reasons.

No, no...squirrels hardly ever eat eggs! I've had reared young squirrels and have adults coming into my home all the time to eat. They will eat the most weird things too, soap, cheese and candles included but both hen and little quail's eggs get ignored. Once in a while a squirrel will take over a nesting hole but the masses of rose ringed parakeets that are taking over London are the real problem there. Crows eat out of date hens eggs I sometimes put out, and fast. Cats people find convenient to put out kill, kill and kill anything they can. Sparrowhawks are and even Peregrines recently around here cut into pigeon populations!

I remember them! Had them here for a period of time too! Maybe late 60’s early seventies at a guess.
