Title: OUT AND ABOUT 2021
Post by: Nurse Julie on February 24, 2021, 01:31:54 PM
At last, the weather was great, warm at 18°, the copious amount of mud on the roads was as least dry, so parts collection and local deliveries took place on the CD250u's.
It felt lovely. A quick stop off at the bikers watering hole for a coffee break as well. Just perfect.

I found I desperately needed tomatoes for the pizza.

So I supported a local farm shop.

A very nice 30mile round trip.

An absolute pleasure.

Feel so much better

I took Grahams 750/4 Mongrel that he built a couple of years back for an MOT this afternoon. I made the most of it and went the very, very long way round 😁😁😁 Nice ride out actually, a bit chilly but felt so good. This is one of the bikes that will be up for sale soon as we really have run out of space now and can't build any more bikes until we make room. I'll be very sad to see it go as it is an absolute blast to ride and just so much fun.

Beautiful day here yesterday. I took the CB900f out for a spin around East and North Herts, stopping at Great Chishill windmill for lunch. The bike wouldn't restart when I stopped for petrol ( a couple of Kind motorists gave me a quick push ... nice of them as its damned heavy), when I got home it only showed 3 volts on the multimeter, but then continued to start which seems a bit odd. More investigation needed.

Great day though - sadly my lunch stop piccie  is too pixel heavy so I can't attach?

A Journo from MCM broke the plastic seat fairing on my CB900FZ pushing it.

He wrote a good review though…

What a stunning day for a nice long ride. Sun shining and lovely and warm. The main roads in our part of Lincs was a ratio of about 10 bikes to 1 car and much fun was being had by all 😁😁😁
This pic was taken up in the Wolds where the roads were very quiet. I'm on Millie the 550 Mongrel and Graham is on the 750 Mongrel.

1st ride out this year on Hettie and what a cracking ride it was as well. Beautiful weather here in Lincs , no cars on the roads, only what seemed like millions of bikes. Hettie is running spot on. It was just perfect.

Decided to give the 350/4 an airing today - 20 degrees in Orkney, 10 in the morning and 10 in the afternoon  8). I actually prefer the 350 to the 400, the bars are taller and slightly wider so you can actually see behind you and the 5 speed box suits me better.  It seems a bit 'softer' on the road too - perhaps the rear dampers are more knackered!
Anyway, I pootled out to the Broch of Gurness over the Birsay moors and watched a male hen harrier circling and quartering - probably looking for an Orkney vole for lunch.

Clear blue skies and vivid blue water - fabulous!

Great to blow the cobwebs away!

Wonderful photos from the magical Orkney Isles, the weather looks fantastic.

Had a motorcycle touring holiday up there and camped at Point of Ness, drunk at the bierfest in Stromness Hotel and visited archeological sites older than the Egyptian pyramids.
It's a beautiful place to be.

Your 350 looks good as well!

Yes, we are really lucky to live in such a wonderful place - over 15 years of living in our paradise!  Having said that your location is pretty impressive too - we have toured that area many times by GoldWing and stayed in Cesky Krumlov and further north in Kralupy a few times - lovely people and great food and beer!  First time ever for us on a double decker train from Kralupy to Prague.

And he should know !

Great photos after such a long time in hibernation.....let's hope this summer is a stonker !

I can see why he would have said that but hadn't come across that particular quote. Although I have both the 400 and 350 and like many, love that frontal view of the 4 pipe 'bunch of bananas' on the 400, when you walk around the left side it just doesn't look finished!  The 350 looks good from any angle - to me anyway.  We have quite a few on this forum but obviously nowhere near as many as the 400's

I think that the quote appears in the "Performance Portfolio" on page four, part of the introduction.

It might appear elsewhere in that book too.

I went out really early on VFR this morning as its forecast to p**s down all day from about 9 am.

If only I could have the will power to do it more often (get up early that is)   I had the roads to myself and although it was a bit nippy, it was a pleasure to be out on two wheels.   For once the forecasters got it right, its slinglng it down now as I write this!    :(

I wish I still had the ability to go out even when I know it's going to rain. Too many years of car use I guess, plus an aversion to cleaning bikes. The best mine get (unless I'm selling one) is a hose off and when dry a good wipe over the shiny bits with WD40. That said, I have a 10 mile circuit that I use to run each bike in turn that I went round three times yesterday. Cb350F, CB450 Black Bomber, and CB750F2. I was going to go again with the GS1000 then the realisation that keeping 6 bikes running is an uphill task so I gave up. ;D

Had a lovely ride today, beautiful sunshine and quite warm.
Stopped off for a cuppa at a local bikers meeting place and saw this CB500/4 UK K1. Got nattering to the chap, who lives in Hull and he bought this new in 1972.Its had 4 different speedo's on it over the years so he doesn't know how many miles it's done and he's on his 3rd Genuine Honda exhaust system. It gets ridden very regularly, he maintains it very well mechanically but isn't in the slightest bit interested in doing it up.... he's in love with the patina and I don't blame him in the slightest. All round a good honest bike.

Another ride out last week on the Heffalump-Dumpaloon, we visited the 'Singing Ringing Tree', a steel sculpture on a remote hillside near Burnley, so called because of the noise the wind makes as it blows through the tubes.

I couldn't bear it, very dark and weird indeed!

I was more into Roobarb & Custard, and the Magic Roundabout. Apparently Eric Thompson (Emma's dad) didn't bother at all with the original French scripts, and wrote the whole thing from scratch to match the pictures.

At the end of one episode, "A Peaceful Day", when Zebedee called his catchphrase of "Time for bed.", Florence asked "Already?", and Zebedee replied that "It's nearly time for the news, and you've had enough magic for one day." The news was broadcast just after The Magic Roundabout.

Finally,  some decent riding weather.  Went out to Llandow (former WW2 airfield and now a go cart track) for a rideout,  meet up and a brew.  I needed that.

Haven't been there for years,

Used to race around it,

Almost circular.

Some nice bikes

Out and about on two bikes over the weekend, sadly neither my the Honda, I needed to use the HD to take the wife on the back, she doesn't like pillion on the CL450 as she feels there's not much room, and no grab rail. Also I was busy running the Z1A in, it started for the first time on Friday night, by Monday Tea Time I had 160 miles on the clock.

The Z1A meets a modern tribute act, the guy was chuffed to see the real thing, offered me a straight swap on the spot, but at 2x the price that wasn't happening. Same paint job, but I did point out that his engine looks like it came out of a washing machine.

Earlier I had stopped at Ramsbottom to see what was on the ELR this weekend, and was rewarded with an engine I've not seen on the line before, A4 Pacific 60009 Union of South Africa. I used to volunteer here, but no longer have to get up at 5am to go and light a steam engine!

Also I went for a ride with the wife and HD, with some of my mates, on a viewpoint over Marsden, I give you the Mild Ones.

Me on the left, Tony, Leigh and Duncan on our twins ride - My Sportster, Leigh's Commando, and two Guzzi Bobbers. Leigh thinks I should always have a pillion as it gives him a chance to keep up.

Out in Snowdonia today,

Had a good excuse, fancied a posh Ice cream from a shop in Bedgelert.

So a ride up,stopping at the narrow gauge railway,

BTW,the queue for ice cream was massive, so decided not to wait, will pop back another day.

Cracking ride out today in North Lincs. Its amazing who you meet in the middle of nowhere. Stopped to take one of these photos and a couple of chaps on pushbikes stopped for a natter. One was Roger Burnett, TT senior winner in 1986 and GP rider back in the mid 80's. He lives up in North Lincs and a very nice chap he is indeed. I didn't ask him for a photo of him next to our bikes although I'm sure he would have obliged.

So after almost two years pretty much off the saddle, I needed no more motivation today to get my arse on my Z900 and go for nice long a sunny rideout into the Surrey and Hampshire Hills. Next will be the K1 when the carbs are sorted.  8)

Yep, I was still grinning Dave, that is until the storms came on Wed night and I had to abandon a rideout with a few Zed mates but the sun will shine again soon I'm sure.  8)

Yep, they sure are Roy and they're just as good to ride too as I'm sure you'd agree. I waited 40 years to buy a Z900 (with several bikes in-between); it was an early 60th birthday present from Bev in May 17 as I was planning to PX my gold K1 for one in May 77 but met her in Nov 76 and spent all my money trying to impress her, as we did back then... ::)

Out today, nice circle ride,
Abergavenny
Usk
Chepstow
Monmouth.

About 80 miles, twisty and undulating,

Surprisingly they have made Tintern a 20 limit.

Place is quiet and deserted,
It was 30,which was plenty low enough.

Do you and Graham actually do any work? you always seem to be out riding.
🤣 🤣 🤣 Yes, we do an awful lot of work between the beginning of October through to the end of May. We hardly do any work for customers in June, July, August and September. During our 'summer' break, we work on our own bike projects, go out riding whenever it's not raining, work on home DIY projects when it's raining and generally take life easy ☺️☺️☺️☺️☺️

That looks like a great evening, hopefully soon I will be back on the road, this getting old is fun, heart attack, new knee and now the cataract in my one good eye has been fixed so I can see properly again. My 4 weeks of no lifting is over so the F1 can get a service and new tyres and I'll be back on the road.

Went on a ride out last night to Porthcawl and met up with a few people from our club and a few others. The ride was marred by the 400 intermittently cutting out on 2 cylinders, 1,4 being the culprit.  I rode home with a mate from the IAM on his Guzzi outfit and an IAM observer on his BMW.  Again, the fault reappeared on the way home.
Today, I checked the wiring to the coils, cleaned up some of the bullets, cleaned and gapped all the plugs.  I hope that's fixed it.
Apart from the hastle, a great ride and some excellent cod and chips.

Love that Rickman in the picture. Looks really good with that single seat, standard exhaust and in that colour - remember a group of Welsh lads  (south Wales I think)who stayed each year in the same guest house as me at the TT (mid 70's to early eighties) had Rickmans at one stage - mad as hatters on them - they where always first out on the road when the roads open car went past and barriers lifted (or was it the marshals bikes - can't remember what was used due to old age!) and try and catch/overtake it! Used to call them the 'mad Taffs'! (hope that doesn't constitute racist in these politically correct times!

It's got a Dyna S system, no points, condensers etc.  Anyway, I rode it to work and back and it's OK.  Not sure yet whether it's fixed because it was an intermittent fault but so far, good

Hate to tell you but Dyna, especially S, have been having failures according to US forum plus they have a high current draw and need top battery voltage which the charging systems frquently cant supply

I'm using 5 ohm coils.  Some people use 3 ohm or less and the system has excessive current consumption and overheating.
Title: Re: OUT AND ABOUT 2021
Post by: K2-K6 on July 24, 2021, 04:39:07 PM
My understanding of it is that often a lower resistance coil has been advised to give a "high energy" output, with it as much of a bodge as it appears.

5 ohm is used with points on these bikes as the dwell, although at the same angle throughout rev range, alters in time with crank speed. And so and aggregated specification of 5 ohm allows them not to overheat at continuous low rpm through over saturation, but still making decent spark at high rpm.

Electronic doesn't ordinarily vary dwell, it just uses the crankshaft pulse as a starting trigger ( if designed properly) to then let the transistor circuit switch coil saturation at ideal and constant dwell, for any rpm. As such it shouldn't draw any more demand at low rpm as the logic internal to system cuts input without overrun, but still makes the same dwell time at full rpm.

The coils should match the advice given for the system in use. 5ohm coils on 3ohm designed dwell should give sub optimal performance at full rpm.

One of my kiddies favourite local burger joints, Jolly Postie in Royston, has something similar but nowhere near as nice as a novelty ,eat-in' booth.

Yes and quite a cross pollination within that group too. NSU Ro80 car has twin rotor Wankel engine with the overall layout and engineering philosophy going into the Audi 100 car , but the leaving the rotary behind.

There's another connection too with the Benelli Sei, it's to your own Honda 500 John. It really is a 500 copy with two additional cylinders, even the pistons, rods, primary chain plus various other components being interchangeable, apparently.

And thats where the connection ends, the build quality didn't get copied, pile of junk, i had a brand new Sei in 1976 and it leaked from stem to stern, didn't keep it long, put it in for a new Honda 750 K6.

They were one time makers of steam fittings and made a steam driven car.
I drove a DKW car in the sixties - very fast two stroke engined.

Failed to get to Willersley – its only 5 miles up the road.
The DK/DS Special is still fighting me; there’s always something.
First run out for the bike in 5 years and my first time back on a bike in 20 years.
All togged up, (new helmet) switched on the fuel and it just poured out all over the crankcase. Took it apart and the O ring was dried out and broken. Managed to nadger up the 14mm hex head too on the fuel cup whilst pulling it apart.
So it was onto Silvers website: £4 for new ‘O’ ring (what!) and £10 for a new fuel tap cup.
I WILL get on the road soon.
Any meet ups in Gloucestershire or Worcestershire, please lemme know.
Ride safe.

Also Das Kleine Wünder.

A distant ancestor of Audi.

Yes and quite a cross pollination within that group too. NSU Ro80 car has twin rotor Wankel engine with the overall layout and engineering philosophy going into the Audi 100 car , but the leaving the rotary behind.

I used to sell the NSU RO80's in 1973 when I was in the car trade - they were very underated in my view. The later two plug engines were an improvement on the earlier four plug ones as I recall - not suited for stop start town work but brilliant for long commutes. I had a customer who used to drive from Birmingham to London or Blackpool several times a week in his - he racked up almost 60k miles in a year!

Some photos from East Kirkby last night.
I went on Kitty the 500 K1 and Graham took Noddy, the 750 K6. (1st photo). I didn't take pics of all the classics but there was are really good turnout of them. There were at least 7 CBX 1000's and Kawazaki Z1's / 900 were in abundance as well. I've added a couple of aerial photos showing just how many bikes turned up and they were still streaming through the gates when the pics were taken.

Wow what great photos, thank you for taking the time to post them, some really nice bikes there, that six piper CBX looks most impressive.
As a huge Hailwood fan I have always been in love with multiple pipes on a bike.
The Lancaster looks like it has lost it's wing tips must be part of the return to the skies project.

I rode Elen into central London on Sunday, she's been off the road for a few months so I didn't want to stray too far from home yet, and besides, she is exempt congestion charge and the ULZ charge, alas she ain't allowed to park where she wants though, maybe historic bikes should be allowed a blue badge? Should we work on it? ;D  but hey, I even managed to find a place in the shade to actually park for free at Admiralty Arch... ;)

Riding home through rush hour traffic is no fun with a 4k tickover and max speed about 35,

Anyone reccomend a new cable supplier?

They used to have a small factory at Crickhowell, just outside Abergavenny in the early 80's.

Powered by the alloy 850 Reliant motors.

Also Known as Phasar, I seem to remember.

Forerunner of Burgmann scooter with hub centre steering.

I've seen a few of those around. I think they were 125cc. The last one I saw was pretty wrecked and it was for sale. Benelli also sold something similar. They turn up on eBay occasionally.

I went, on the Z1-A, up to Lancaster and back on Saturday, around 150 miles round trip, to see my Mum. She didn't fancy a ride on pillion.

The bike went well, very smooth and no issues. By the time I got back it had done 500 miles since going back on the road after the top end checkover, so its now having its first service. One of the valve clearances has opened up somehow, the other 7 are all in spec. I will order a shim from Z Power today. Also a couple of the head bolts needed re tightening. Plugs are clean, also all four piston crowns have the same colour carbon on them, unlike the first attempt.
Title: Re: OUT AND ABOUT 2021

Sounds like you have it all sorted now Dave. I had the same issue with the valve clearance although mine changed from checking during the initial engine strip to when it went back together, three of the valves had closed up.

Sunday I popped down to the BMPS bike show nearby, the first show I've been to on the Z1-A since I finished her.

Best in Show! Maybe next time I'll bring a bungee, so I can strap the trophy on the headlamp, like Marlon Brando in The Wild One. I stuffed it in my jacket, dropped it off at home and went for a ride.

Perhaps I shouldn't go to any more shows, and retire her with a 100% success rate.

Life has got in the way recently and I've had 'stuff' going on for the past 2-3 weeks which has interfered with my bike riding activities which is really not good 😢😢😢.
Got out today though on my own for a few hours on Kitty the K1 and bloody luverly it was too. 110 miles of great riding and a couple of coffee stops. After 109¾ miles and whilst doing 85 mph, I thought, the back end of this bike doesn't feel good all of a sudden 🤔🤔🤔 Stopped and had a look and found a totally flat back tyre, it went from fully inflated to fully flat in less than a few seconds. Bugger.
Phoned my breakdown company (Trigger 😁) who came out with a foot pump but the tyre had left the rim and the tube was obviously punctured, so air wouldn't stay in.
Never mind, I rode the last ¼ mile home at 10mph.
I can only see what looks like the broken end of a thorn, no other tell tale signs of what caused the puncture
Still a great ride out though, life always feels better after a good ride.

Before the puncture

The culprit 🤔🤔🤔

Glass half full Julie....110 Miles of glorious biking versus 1/4 mile at 10MPH. Them's good odds in my book !

I'm having trouble with a pain in my groin at the moment......but I'm determined that I'll get out on my bike on Sunday....Bollocks to it ! LOL.

Much impressed with your Kitty....she looks wonderful.....and a real credit to you (both).

Indeed it is Si. I will have a proper look at the tyre when it's off tomorrow but at the moment a thorn / wood splinter looks the most likely culprit.

Great to see people out and about! Pissed and rained all day yesterday. Better day today thankfully, there’s a big bike gathering and bike run in Orkney today in aid of Macmillan. We will be covering a good part of the west mainland of Orkney which is not that many miles really, but it’s all about the donations. It has been reported that there will be approx 150 bikes, not sure about that I will post follow up.🏍🏍🏍

Yes, a fantastic day out and lots of money raised for Macmillan - probably still more to come in too!  Good riding weather apart from a wee shower (rather than a shower of wee!)  near the end which dried up in no time giving a good ride home!  I clocked just under a 100 miles on the Wing - but of course, I live in the Wild West!
Good to meet Johnny again and lots of other folk we've missed these past 18 months.
165 bikes Johnny and as we all know there's probably still 5 times that number tucked away in sheds.
For John Webley - if you folks do venture North (probably next year now?) I'm sure a whole bunch of us (and maybe some of the Caithness/Sutherland folk too) would like a meet up for part of your trip.  Only thing to add is that you avoid early June as many of us go to the Shetland Classic - now there's another great place for riding!

Here's the CL450 out on the local back lanes last week. Dovestones and Pots & Pans are in the background.

Had a great ride on the Honda to a very warm and dry Cadwell Park today. No Limits track day on, fast boys doing laps around 1min 50secs.       Almost empty Caistor High street and NO artic tankers heading for Ming Ming for a change.
Excellent ride out.
Regards all......

We rode along Caister High Street today, yes it was very quite which all made for a lovely fast ride. If anyone thinks the Caistor High Street is in a village or a town, its not, its the main road across the Wolds and a fantastically fast road with lots of ups and downs and twisties.... Great fun 😊😊😊

Caister Back Road as my mum used to call it. Great road running from Humberside airport south - always my route of choice when I rode back and forth from Beverley towards Herts.

There's also a loop back further West, Bardney Bends :      Horncastle -Bardney-Market Rasen-then 4 dull miles on the A46 before heading for Moortown and Howsham then before Brigg turn East back to Caistor.

Market Rasen to East Ravendale is a good old wrestle with a bike  on the B1203 but it ends up at the A18, best to turn around and go back down it again !

Enjoy while the roads are dry

Regards all....

Lovely and sunny here this afternoon, about 23 DegC rode the Z900 to Loomies Moto Cafe at East Meon, plenty of numpties queuing for fuel along the route which amused and irritated me....... ;D / >:(

One day it'll be the K1's turn.

180 mile 'trapse' about Somerset and Wiltshire today. T

Three cups of tea, two ciggies and a rather handsome egg butty later, which I might add, was a 'proper one' which managed to run down my hand and into my cuff just like an egg butty should.
My Dad always said "it's an egg butty unless its dripping off yer elbow..." and Rose (VFR) is back in the shed to catch her breath. Lovely days riding with good pals, good roads and some welcome late sun.

600+ bends and 600+ smiles...............Never gets dull does it?

If you both can find the time to visit Mid/North Wales there are some beautiful roads to enjoy,

A nice one, about 23 miles long is from Newtown to Llandrindod  A483,

Great surface, bends from as low as 30mph up to as fast as you dare,

Did I mention the area has hills?

You will enjoy your visit,

I was due to scoot up that way earlier in the year but a change of meeting spot put a stick of doom into the equation and I had to take the van. Wiltshire's not bad but the gravel on the roads is bonkers at the minute. That and the lads are cutting the maize meaning most gate holes have a 100yd+ run up and exit of compressed red clay meaning some are a bit lively if unseen. Kinda ruins yer day!

had a good hoot today with a 'tiny hoon' mixed in, just to stretch my legs, yer know. ;) 8)
