Help required re camshaft and primary chains.
Started checking out the engine parts prior to a re-build for the cafe racer project, chains for stretch, crank clearances etc. The only reference I can find regarding primary chain stretch is on youtube by "hackaweek" who states that the measurement from the sump flange to the primary tensioner should be no more than 70mm. Mine is measuring 68.5mm, is this O.K ? or time for new chains ?
Regarding the camshaft, I have an R1 which is totally shot. It has four totally different sizes of journals and one of the cam towers has had bronze bushed fitted. I got a set of decent cam towers from Mick some time ago and now need a camshaft. Am I correct in saying that practically any camshaft will fit ?
Any help and advice would be greatly appreciated.

Change the primary chains, primary tensioner and cam chain ( upgrade to FTH ) along with the tensioner and mid wheel. You don't want to be going back in there again ;)

Is a standard did cam chain ok, was original honda chain heavy duty, I need to buy 3 of them and it makes huge difference to price

Have you found any of the non heavy duty ones for sale Pete and how much are they out of interest. We have been selling the DID 219 FTH which are the heavy duty ones, for about 3 years now and fit them to all the engine rebuilds also. I haven't seen a 'normal ' one for about 3 years advertised anywhere as DID stopped manufacturing them and now do the heavy duty ones as the standard replacement. Edit...i am talking endless by the way, not soft link.

Ah, OK. The last standard DID endless I saw for sale was a good 18 months ago and that was in a box that had been opened and the chain wasn't even wrapped in the DID oil paper 🤣🤣🤣. If you are interested but you're probably not due to price and needing 3 , but I sell the upgraded 219 FTH DID chains for £45 inc post. I'm not worried if anyone thinks that's expensive or cheap, I sell too many of them to not worry about it, including to a Honda dealer which is damned strange. 😀😀😀

OK Pete, just shout if I can be of help. Don't forget these are endless ones, so a complete engine strip needed (but you know that 🙄🙄🙄) I don't sell any soft link chains at all.

I have most parts now for my 3 1969 engines, but would be interested to know what other parts you sell or can get, I have a further 4 engines to build if I ever get round to it

I have NOS in Honda Bag Genuine -970 race part endless camchain ...don't want to sell it but will gladly swap for an endless CB500 four camchain.

Can I ask, what is the problem with using a soft link in a new chain ? considering the final drive chain is fitted with a soft link.

If your final drive chain link comes off, yes, it can be dangerous to people behind you and your own legs. If a soft link cam chain link gives way, it totally wrecks the inside of the engine and most of the components in it. The engine could also seize immediately and could cause a huge problem to the riders life expectancy. People do use soft link but only if they are not stripping the bottom end of the engine.

That'll be no soft links then LOL.
Still asking the question re the camshaft. Will any camshaft fit (I realise cam lift and timing are different on different cams). When you are up Sh*t creek without a paddle, even a lollypop stick will get you going

It is a tricky one to answer as, I have no real dealings with F2 heads or any of the running gear. All other CB750 sohc's fit K0 to F1 ;)

F2 was nearest cam tobthe original which was de-tuned a bit over the years but any cam will run, not sure about towers and rocket arms as F2 valves were bigger and angle changed i believe. You could check all the part numbers to be certain.

hi, whiteylfc, been in Cyprus, just back yesterday.
Nurse Julie sorted me out with a good used camshaft an a new camchain but I still have to buy the drivechains and tensioner and the camchain tensioner. Got the old ones with only 15 thousand miles on the clock but I may as well go the whole hog and buy new.
