Hi all. Spotted this earlier when out on the pushbike. Dealer was closed, but looked good from a distance through the window. Anyone on here owned/restored this? Not one of yours James H??!!

Other Bikes / To soak or not to soak...
« on: January 12, 2021, 07:38:15 PM »
This is way off topic for an SOHC forum, but there is such a wealth of knowledge, Ill ask anyway.
I have a push pull type fuel tap on my 1948 Francis Barnett. I am renewing the corks washers that sit above and below the push pull bit, and act as seals. I have researched on line and there are numerous different views. Some say boil the corks before fitting, some say soak in petrol or water. Others say just fit them as they are.
Does anyone have a view on this? Cheers Harold

CB350/400 / Plugs and bogging down troubles
« on: September 27, 2020, 09:49:39 AM »
I’m after some advice on my 400/4 pls.
I have had some top end work done by a local guy I really trust including a rebore, new pistons, rings etc. It’s run in now and on the whole running really well. It pulls well and revs freely. However, it bogs down when pulling away.  I have pulled the plugs and to me it looks too rich, generally very black and sooty. End of silencer is sooty as well. I took the air filter out to see if increased air into the carbs would help, but it made no difference.
So having read various threads, I thought I’ll adjust the airscews out a tad to lean it up a bit. Checked them and believe it or not, they are 4 turns out already?! In theory it should be running way too lean?

Nurse Julie, I saw your post on the CB400f site re plugs. What was your thinking behind the D7EA plugs? I’m currently using the D8EA.
Can’t get hold of my pal who did the work, as he lives in Belgium and staying there until things settle down with the virus. Any advice gratefully received.
Cheers. Harold.

CB350/400 / Rocker cover gasket
« on: July 16, 2019, 01:50:50 PM »
I've had an annoying oil leak from top of cylinders, so I started by checking the cylinder head nut torques. Most were not to correct torque so carefully tightened and got them all to torque up. Hopefully this was reason for the leak.

I've come to put the rocker cover back on complete with new rubber gasket.
How do I hold the gasket in place whilst fitting the rocker cover? I've seen red rubber grease mentioned on here. Will that do the trick??

Many thanks
H

CB350/400 / 400/4 stripped thread
« on: September 11, 2018, 06:44:35 PM »
I had a stripped thread on the crankcase where the clutch cover fits. Not having a huge amount of mechanical expertise, I was inspired by Nurse Julie's posts, and others, to have ago at sorting it.
I bought the bottom end of a 400/4 engine from Fryerk (cheers Kevin) very cheaply, and had a go at a helicoil on this before trying on my bike. The helicoil turned out to be pretty straight forward.
The stripped thread was accessible without taking the engine out. I took the clutch cover off, and had a mild panic as the kick start shaft came out with it, but pretty straight forward to relocate it.
The helicoil was straight forward again, as my practice run. Put a new gasket on. I read the different views about grease/no grease, and decided to put it on dry. Had fun and games initially getting the cover back on as the kickstart shaft was not fully seated, but once I'd sussed that, it went back together.  New filter and oil, and Bob's your uncle. A very satisfying few hours thanks to the excellent advice on the forum.

CB500/550 / 550 k3 electric failure
« on: April 22, 2018, 08:04:28 AM »
Was out on a run on the 550 yesterday. It was running really well for 25 miles or so. First hint of trouble was when it hesitated, backfired, but then it was fine. I came to a junction, and the electrics completely died. Pushed it to a layby, and the main fuse had blown. Replaced the fuse but still absolutely dead.

I've checked the battery which seems ok, and even tried a spare charged battery, but nothing. Have taken the earth lead from the battery off where it connects to frame, it looked ok but I cleaned it anyway. Still nothing.

I'm after some advice as to what to look at next?? I was thinking fuse box terminals and ignition switch. How would I go about testing these? I have a multi meter, but pretty clueless tbh.

Anything else obvious I should be looking at?

Any advice gratefully received. Cheers.

CB350/400 / 400/4 spark plug helicoil
« on: August 10, 2015, 08:59:03 PM »
Looking to sort the plug threads on my 400/4. From past posts, helicoils look to be the way to go.
I have read the inserts can come out when you take the plugs out?? Has anyone had any issues with helicoils?
Many thanks
Harold.

CB350/400 / 400/4 missing breather chamber
« on: March 14, 2015, 04:51:06 PM »
After some advice please.
Discovered my bike is missing the metal grille that sits at the bottom of the air filter box. On looking into this, I found the whole breather chamber assembly beneath the air filter is also missing.
Am I right in thinking the hose from the breather cover on the top of the engine is supposed to go into the breather assembly under the air filter?? At the moment, it runs right down by the centre stand.
Bike seems to run ok, but would the absence of a breather unit affect running??
Any comments much appreciated.
Cheers
Harold

CB350/400 / DSS pattern mudguard for 400/4
« on: January 02, 2015, 04:51:24 PM »
Happy New Year to all.
Has anyone bought a DSS pattern front mudguard for a 400/4 recently?? Can you let me know what the quality of chrome finish is like, and also if they fit ok?? Is there much of a difference compared with a genuine Honda mudguard?
Many thanks
Harold

CB350/400 / Tyre advice 400/4
« on: September 06, 2014, 08:20:24 AM »
Managed to write my rear tyre off yesterday, and looking for advice on replacement.
I searched the forum, and Avon and Pirelli got good write-ups.
Currently running Metzelers which seem Ok, but I have not tried any others for comparison.
DSS are selling Maxxis.
Any thoughts gratefully received whether recommendations, or brands to avoid.

CB350/400 / 400/4 electrics.
« on: November 13, 2013, 07:51:28 PM »
Hi all. New to the site and looking for some advice. My 400/4 recently lost all electrics, and I eventually traced it back to corroded connections in the fuse box. I have cleaned the connections, but will replace the whole fuse box. My bike seems to have been modified at some point, as the wires from the fuse box are individual bullet type connectors, rather than the connector block type that come as standard with a new fuse box

My question is would I be better off converting back to the connector block and fitting the standard fuse box, or taking the connector block off the new fuse box, and replacing with bullet connectors??

Any views??
