CB750 / Cb750 clutch replacement
« on: September 05, 2018, 05:56:16 PM »
I've never replaced a clutch on a motorcycle but I need to do mine on the k6. I'm relatively ok at a DIY mechanics level - is it a relatively simple job to do, is there anything I need to watch out for. I will seek guidance from YouTube etc before I start and read the text available on line. I'm going to change the oil at the same time so I assume once drained I can set the bike on its centre stand rather than the side stand to prevent any seepage ??????
The clutch is almost at the extent of the lever being entirely out ( even with proper adj) and it clatters like hell when the clutch lever is out on tickover, so I'm hoping I will get some improvement when complete. I may have to check the carb balancing to ease some of the clatter as I believe that is generally the cause ?

I managed a decent 40mile run today by way of a test after changing the oil to 5w. Has definatly made an improvement to the extent I have to forgive the 'performance of the front suspension ' by virtue of its design and age. Very pleased with the improvement. I guess it depends also on the weight of the rider and the style of riding ?. Being only circa 11.5 stone the 5 w seems to work for me.

CB750 / Cb750 spindle clamps

2 questions:
1. Refitting the spindle clamps am I right in thinking you fit them with the 'f' mark to the front , slightly thicker side, and clamp this up tight, then tighten the rear bolt to clamp the spindle. I cannot find the torque settings does anyone know what they are, it appears to be an8mm bolt ? Would around 18 lb ft be ok ?

2. Anyone know of a party that might offer an opinion or actually 're true' spoke wheels in the stockport/ high peak areas ?

Cheers
Paul

By way of an update, I have just added a 5w oil to my forks and the bounce has in fact reduced quite considerably.
I'm not saying I have in fact cured it yet as I would like a second opinion on the 're Truing ' of the wheels by someone.
Another issue I guess mentioned by a previous party was that we should not I guess expect too much from these bikes, they are heavy, old tech and should not be compared to a modern machine. I find I am doing this constantly with the ride and the engine noises and quite frankly it drives you a little mad.

Are your wheels correctly trued and balanced ?. My front wheel was not fully trued, it had a flat spot , I  have improved it but it needs another go, as does the rear wheel. Making a slight improvement on the front made a slight diffence to the bounce I was experiencing although I still need to properly true them both. I have also picked up some 5w oil which I will add to improve the damping. Like you it puts me off riding the Honda a little, but with some patience I suspect it will get sorted.

No it's definatly a struggle. Almost pulls my arm out of the socket. It certainly won't get any lighter or easier as time marches on and when it's sat on the side stand it's bordering vertical which never looks safe !. A slight rock and huge effort to lift gets it there eventually - in 10 years time it will be a different story.

Point noted. I'll check Spring length when I get to it before considering replacement.

Just looking at various 5w fork oil types. I seem yo have a choice of classic blends from millers ( specified for vintage / classic motorcycles) to the more newer blends of fully synth and semi synth.

Does it matter if you use modern fully synth types - ie will it affect seals etc or leak past them ?.
Any advice welcome.
Thanks
Paul

CB750 / Re: Which Engine Oil should I use ?
« on: August 06, 2018, 09:22:26 AM »
Just continuing on from this post, the Honda manual states sae 10w-40 castrol gtx. I haven't done any further research as yet as I won't change the oil for 2-3 months. That said is the castrol gtx the, the oil that is generally advertised and used on cars etc ? Or is there a specific motorcycle gtx version ?.
I'm running a cb750 k6, it will probably run less than a 1000 ( gentle) miles per annum so looking for a decent value oil ( recommendation) - as I guess putting a premium quality oil in could be a waste and in addition may perhaps play havoc with oiled seals I suspect ?????
Any advice welcome.

I think for the price of the oil, it will be worth a bit of experimentation to see what oil has what effect. I'll report back after I have tried a couple. Spring length I will check when they are out but great to know what they should be.
