CB750 / Re: Fork Spring / oil

Interesting feedback - thanks. I will try a thinner oil first as suggested, seems to make sense.
Thanks again for your input.

CB750 / Fork Spring / oil
« on: June 23, 2018, 02:24:43 PM »
Hi guys, working through a process of elimination to remove a hop or bob out of my k6 front forks. I will attempt to ensure wheels are true and steering head tight in due course. I will then probably try a thicker oil first before replacing springs.
Q: if I remove the springs - is there a way of checking if they actually need replacing or is it just worth doing due to the age of the bike ?
Q: David silver do not stock any longer - I have located progressive springs that may be available via Hagon - is this the best outlet ?
Q: I believe I have 10w oil in there at present, might it be worth draining and trying a slightly thicker oil before a spring change to say 15w or even 20w. I'm only around 11-12 stone so I don't want to stiffen it too much as I believe some of the thicker oils are needed for a heavier load ?
Any advice welcome
Regards
Paul

Hi Ken, I believe James did all the service issues before I purchased it from him. The oil is certainly clean. I also believe he had the carbs set up, my intervention is simply to learn how to do the work and fine tune if I need to. I've reset the static timing ( strobe I haven't attempted yet as I've not used a strobe gun since 1978/79 and therefore need to check up on it. I've reset the cam chain as per the post I have placed my input on. I'm currently trying to re true a front wheel although I await my torque set ( due). I have a hop on the front which may require a bit more thought but I want my Haynes manual ( due) before I start any strip down. I now have my carb tune but again I want to ensure all other service items are done before attempting that plus a fan !
So all in all building confidence slowly on it. Trying to decide whether I invest in a bench lift or not at present ? I'm not getting any younger !

Appreciate the gesture, that's what makes this forum great in my opinion, people are genuinely helpful with their time and equipment, I hope I can do similar as my knowledge increases. Only issue on the Morgan - mine arrived this morning !. Never mind if either fails we know where we can loan one. Thanks for the gesture though - much appreciated. I just ordered a spoke torque wrench also so if anyone needs one give me a shout !, oh and also a Gunson - you never know you might be able to teach me how to use all ths stuff !

Hi guys, being new to this classic arena ( I've ridden 47 years and since the 70's have never had to tune an engine !!). I thought it was about time I delved deeper and took the plunge with a k6. I am using it as a tool to learn some of the techniques as well as ride. I am on a quest to buy the correct tools, and hopefully pick up the tips from experienced guys on what and how to do the work on the bike. I have read ( just) the threads that Are referred to but from my perspective I don't have the confidence to divert from the 'book' so to speak for fear of causing damage to what was a rather expensive purchase. So please bear with us newbies to catch up with you guys - it's a hell of a learning curve !!!. Even the rattles and knocks on these engines send shivers down my spine compared to my other , later bikes !. On the plus side I'm enjoying the journey ( so far).

It seems to be OK on mine since I have done it.
Hopefully our experts agree.

CB750 / Re: CARB VACUM GUAGES/BALANCER - BEST ONES?
« on: June 16, 2018, 07:51:34 PM »
Looks to be a nice set. I have already ordered the Morgan so it will be an idea to compare notes one day. Having never set eyes on any of this kit my learning curve just gets steeper !. Considering I haven't really touched a bike ( other than change the oil , oil filter and air filters ) I'm kinda enjoying getting stuck into the whole maintenance lark. My bank balance has suffered recently but so far my wife hasn't twigged things so all  is good.

Looking at the reviews I'm edging toward the Morgan Carbtune pro 4 £70 delivered. The syncpro sounds good but much more expensive and the need to calibrate each time is a little off putting.

I shall add that to my list. At this rate I'll need more than a 750 to drag my carcass around after all these pastries :D

Crispy, where in Derbyshire are you based. I ride there most weeks around edale,Castleton, monyash, ashford etc . I tend to migrate to monyash to the cafe adj the black bull these days as its a reasonable round trip from Marple.

CB750 / Re: Suspension - hop.
« on: June 14, 2018, 11:00:46 AM »
It happens on most roads, I've lessened it a little by adjusting the spokes and reducing the flat spot, it was about 3-4 mm out of true , now it's down to around 1mm so when I get hold of a torque wrench I'll deal with it properly. I just wondered if it's old hat suspension or perhaps a damping issue - thicker oil perhaps ?. I haven't delved into the replacement of oil yet but will probably look at this at some point.
