Well now I have some room in the garage after selling a couple of the bikes so been on the lookout for another project.
I came across this (thanks again Graham) and picked it up yesterday.
Bike is 95% complete missing bits are the main stand, top half of the chain guard and exhausts.
If anyone has any of these and are willing to part with them please give me a shout.
Can't believe how small it is even compared to the 400/4 ;D
-
Great project Paul - always fancied a Honda twin or single from that era as a project but the prices have gone through the roof (when you take the cost of the parts as well).
Good luck with the rebuild - I'm sure you will enjoy it
-
That will keep you busy for a while ;)
These are great bikes and bomb down the road very well. Engine is easy and cheap to do, no hunting for shells on these old girls.
-
Good luck with the build, I enjoyed doing mine in 2015. Never did find (or could not afford) the OE sloper exhaust's & main stand
-
I had one of those in 1970 as my first bike, same colour too!
Mine was, from memory registered RUY439F.
-
Nice find will keep you busy Paul.
I got my 1st one in the same colour (Black Metallic / Lava Grey code XE) in 1972... great bike ..OKH 531F
My current one is Neptune Blue metallic and was one of the two Honda UK press bikes and was reviewed in MotorCycle magazine in 1967 OLA 4E (see link)... OLA 5E was the other Press bike pictured outside the Chelsea Drug Store (K2-K6 found the pic of OLA 5E.
Sloper 1967 magazine reviews:

Here is mine 'as found' looking well worn and sporting tatty Honda CB92 silencers. it's gonna be like Triggers Broom when finished as most cycle parts are NOS (exhausts, wheels, seat tank, guards etc but correct numbers though).
Rare parts you have are the rubber air chamber, grab-rail and bottom chain-guard as it's the bottom half that is usually missing.
-
Pics for you Paul of a my NOS sloper ----230--- centre stand.
Paul is looking for one or one similar to modify.
Message for Sesman ... Lemon is waaaay past it's sell-by-date. The bar-maid in the pub gave it to Cathy to lighten her hair with but it's been left rejected and forlorn ;D
[attachimg=1][attachimg=2][attachimg=3]
-
Probably not an issue to you Paul but I don't think your side stand is correct. It was pressed steel, not tubular.
I think the C92 one was similar .. I have both so I will check later.
You can just make it out in this original period advert :)
Note also the black painted grab rail .. although they were later chromed.
The bike in that advert is the actual one I own !!
[attachimg=1]
-
Sorry .. but C92 is longer than CD175A sloper ..probably had 17" wheels not 16"
[attachimg=1][attachimg=2]
-
Tare down started :D hopefully get the frame etc off to be stripped next week.
Still looking for the missing bits if anyone has them and are willing to part with them.
Also looking for the top left fork cover (ear).
-
That frame and swing arm just crying out for a shot blast and a new coat.🤣 always good to see progress, tear down can actually be quite interesting. Especially if there has been a numpty there before.
-
Hello.
I recommissioned my Sloper last weekend, after being stored for a couple of years.
What a great fun bike to ride. Really gets a move on when in top gear.
Great little bike that just revs & revs.
Sean.
-
Bit more progress.
The engine strip down has been started top end looking quite good apart from the cam chain tensioner was shot the chain had started to wear into the metal and most of the rubber wheel was missing :o
-
The oil filter was an absolute nightmare to get off >:(
-
All the chrome parts going off this evening to Prestige ;D
-
Out of interest wat sort of budget have you set on restoring the bike?
-
Personally Paul I think your asking for miracles with the rims and the front pipes, the pitting seems far too deep for a decent result IMO. Rims might be cheaper getting replaced. Same for headers but I suppose that depends if they are still available.

So do I but if you don’t ask you won’t know. And it’s only one rim and one down pipe which is bad. I do have another rim lined up but they are hens teeth.
-
None at DS?
BTW what's the part number for the main stand your after. I'll have a look around for you. I have a habit of finding really hard to find pieces.

Its 50500-230-030B Actually a CD125 part.
I know 'cos I had to find two NOS ones for my own bikes...pretty hens teeth rare even used..pic in an earlier reply. SS125 and CL125 sadly different as they have 17" rims
-
Pic of rim for Paul.... as I can't suss how to put a pic in a PM .. even though I am sure JamesH manages it :-[
Chrome not bad but the usual marks from USA tyre removers >:( ...... It's an OEM KAGA one Free if you want it

Thanks Ash, I have just spoken to Diane so she is expecting it ;D
-
Good job the wife is understanding ;D ;D
Casings all painted and looking good.
-
All the BZP plating back 8).
-
Some very smart work there, exciting as you get further through a project and it's coming together gradually the finished outweighs the non.
-
As far as I know crankcases were never painted originally on the sloper model. Later Honda twins like CB250K and CB450 had painted upper crankcase half but bottom was unpainted. My 1967 Honda press bike sloper was definitely unpainted.

These were Ash and the clutch and filter casings.
I am just going to polish those though.
-
Coming on Paul. Starting to take shape as well.
Pssh, don't mention polishing stuff to Ash ;D ;D ;D
Weird how we can all look at something and see something different, the lower crankcase is looking bob on as we'd say but as soon as I saw it I was thinking, I'd have to remove all those little blobs of casting alloy that Honda just left there but that's just me, how Honda for instance could paint one half and leave the other bare is beyond me. Looks miles better painted IMO.
Looking forward to seeing this one come back to life.
How did the chroming turn out BTW? and was the BZP done by the Sheffield people who's name I can't recall right now. Was thinking of using them before I bought the Gateros kit.

It is tempting to remove the flashing on the castings but that is how Honda left it so it stays.
John street platers in Sheffield Ken, great job and quick three days from dropping of to collecting.
I send the wife now as she has a chat with them, I can only just manage to get there and back in my lunch time.

Interesting build not sure I remember the word Sloper so I guess it's quite an old model, I remeber the Benly 125 Super Sport plus the Dream of which I had the two variants.
Looking on Wiki the Sloper was only built for 2 years so parts must be hard to source.
Be great to see the finished item.

a lot of die-hard CD175A and CD125 restorers hate the reference 'sloper' they reckon it's a term applied to an old Brit bike ..was is a Panther or something.
It's generally a means of distinguishing between the early 1967-1969 bikes from the later ones with non-inclined from vertical engine
My Press bike has been a really labour of love .. I bought it in bits from the estate of a guy who found it and partially restored it and amassed loads of NOS parts for it.
-
Yes the "Sloper" was the big singlel Panther, usualy with a sidecar and they reckon it fired every other lampost,
Rare even when i started in early 70's only seen one at NMM and in pics
-
Engine rebuild coming along nicely, barrels and head back on and cam timing done before fitting the soft link.
Weather warming up so hopefully get the frame and other bits into primer stage.
-
The later 175 and the K series 250/350 had a habit of shattering piston rings if driven hard from cold, repaired a lot back in the 70's
Fine if you let them warm before riding
-
Got a surprise call from the platers on Wednesday saying my parts were ready, wasn't expecting them for a few weeks yet.
Picked them up last night and got to say what a fantastic job Prestige have done yet again.
Just unpacked the big bits to show there work as some of this stuff was in a bad way as you can see prom a previous post.
Thanks again Diane 8) 8).
Must find more time to get on with the project now.
-
Nice looking work indeed Paul. Great to see these original parts refurbished.
-
Lovely result on the chroming, really nice job done by Prestige.
Did they give you a breakdown of the cost of each part or just a lump sum.
I'd love to know the cost of having the handlebars done for instance. Mine are slightly better than yours were rust wise so I'd like to see if the cost of chroming them is comparable to my chroming company.

Individual prices but I would need to go and look at the invoice for the price.

Still a long turn round time though Paul?

Tru Dat
-
Engine re-build finished onto the next job.
-
Looking good Paul.
-
Managed to get the frame prepared treated and primed.
Got stopper in all the old marks after the pictures so ready for another rub down an primer then top coat.
-
Managed to get a few more jobs done after a bit of a health scare.
Seat done just need to clean the trim up and fit is.
-
Frame painted and lacquered and engine back in the frame.
Shock absorber tool made, and shocks stripped.
-
Now that’s looking really nice.
-
Epic build, looking absolutely great so far. Top skills and love the frame colour, and thats not a 'Ted poke'. :)
-
Looking good Paul.
-
Shiney!! Great work.
-
Now that is absolutely beautiful
-
Great work Paul. Considering what you started with its starting to look epic👍
-
Shaping up to be a nice resto! Nice work.
-
Few more bits tagged on. Rear footrests, rear torque arm, Sprocket cover, air box, plug caps, fork stantions (just to get them out of my way) wiring loom all cleaned up and fitted.
-
Nice! ;) :)
-
Love the frame colour - not boring black😁😁😁
-
No, that's a decent colour Ted, not a crappy brown affair ;D ;D ;D ;D
-
I still think Nut Brown would have been a great colour - now I will never know.
-

Great and nut brown should not be used in the same sentence ;)

Whereas nut and brown quite appropriately go together! 😜😜🤭🫢

;D
-
Parts painted fork ears, lower fork shrouds and rear shock covers ;D
-
Absolutely delighted at how these have turned out ;D
-
That's looking very nice Paul - brilliant job on the dampers.
-
New chrome shrouds Paul or replated?. If the latter they've done a superb job as they were bloody far gone and really pitted. I'd imagine Prestige if that's the case.

Re chromed and she turned them around very very quickly ;D
-
That is quite the transformation great job!
-
Managed to get the front end rebuilt last evening.
Now onto the wheels :D
-
Looking really good Paul. Very nice work👍
-
What's the rush Paul. The sun won't be out for another 4-5 months :o

4-5 months have you ever tried to find an exhaust for one of these ;) more like 4-5 years.
Ash might get fed up with his and sell them to me ;D ;D ;)
-
Front wheel laced and trued :D
-
Very satisfying job done. Good work.
-
Looks a neat wheel building rig.

Confused a bit about that Ash, says £350 at the top of page but probably price at the bottom of ad more realistic.
Either way for one exhaust! 😡
-
£350!!! Ouch.
I have just had to buy a new lower dash mount for the Viffer. It has the moulded printed circuit attached for the LCD, rev counter, Speedo and idiot lights. The original had started to corrode internally knocking out the LCD. That was £350 new, Honda spares are not cheap for any bike of any age:(
-
Yep, £1160 for a replacement fuel tank for a CB1300SA. Luckily Isle of Man Steam Packet Co. paid for it.
-
Makes the cost of a replacement battery for a Hybrid Merc look cheap at £15k when they fail the car is effectively scrap if out of warranty.

I've got 2 spare tanks off that bike.
-
Steam Packet caused the bike and a few others to crash over on the ferry so they paid for it. I could have had it repaired but why should I.

£350!!! Ouch.
I sold about 5 of those sloper exhausts about 2 years ago for £325 individually and £700 for a pair .. they were all gone within hours of listing. People were then messaging me to say they had missed out and if I could get any more, they would be prepared to give me more money for them. CB250/350K exhausts genuine NOS now sell for upwards of £400 / side ... a few years back they would have been £100. NOS CB92 Benly silencers go for £1k plus for a pair and likewise CB72/77 ones.
I did alright on the DS stand at Stafford in October though. I tried haggling with DS's mate on his bargain basement area for a few low value items but the guy was adamant 'David says the price on the label is what everything on here needs to go for .. absolutely no offers'. So I paid the full price but then I found an absolutely rare SS125A exhaust, which turned out to be NOS with a tatty old £5 label on it and argued back that the ticket price must be the correct price. The guy questioned it and went off to ask DS but he was busy kerchinging his till, so the guy asked one of the other sales guys who amazingly agreed to my £5 offer. So a £300 + NOS exhaust for a fiver ... result in my book.
When you think about it a few members here agree that a £2k for a NOS set of CB500/ pipes is realistic ....so £350 x 4 = £1,400 for the same number of sloper exhausts sounds reasonably good value indeed in that context. A lot of chromers (e.g. Agbrigg) charge £350 to rechrome a single silencer.
-
Well the bike is back on its wheels and progressing ;D
I did purchase the exhaust thanks Ash.
These things are like hens teeth, he does have a pair of NOS new ones but can't make his mind up if he wants to sell them as he does have a sloper as well.
He has promised to let me have the first option on them if he does sell them.
Not done much as both me and the wife have had this dreaded bug that is going around (didn't even have a Christmas lunch (the wife says it's worse than covid :o she is still off, I'm back at work.
Happy new year everyone.
-
Looks like a nice job Paul! Exciting times!
-
It's looking good Paul can't wait to see what colour the tank & side panels will be I'm guessing Grey/Silver but secretly wishing for something more bling. ;) ;) ;)
In all seriousness I like the original tank colours do the side panels need some contrast perhaps - no Ted they do not?
-
Not a big fan of these old Hondas but that's starting to look very nice Paul, like the colour.
-
I did purchase the exhaust thanks Ash.
Nice one ..hoped you would Paul ;). Honda NOS exhaust are better than money in the bank. Quite a few of my old Hondas I bought the exhausts NOS before actually buying the bike they fit.
The colour is 'Black Metallic' code XE, the same as my JDM CB250 'Dream'. It's actually more like a gunmetal grey. RS Bikepaints didn't have that paint so I 'loaned' them a NOS fork ear to match it too, which they lost >:( their colour designation for it is 'Honda Lava Grey' (not to be confused with Audi Lava Grey). My original sloper back in 1972 was that colour but my sloper now I did in Neptune Blue Metallic only because it was a Honda UK press bike and it was that blue originally.
This is the Dream 250 in Hondas Museum. Colour looks a bit dark but it's deffo XE code. XE parts I have owned NOS were all different shades !

-
I'mnot really into small capacity four strokes but I just watched that short clip............what a beautiful bike that is! AND a wicked colour too, love it!
-
Yep it's a lovely colour and luckily the tank was in excellent condition (spotless inside) but as it has large chrome sides on it, the paint underneath was original and immaculate so was very easy for my local paint shop to match up.
Paint is base coat and 2 pak lacquer.
-
Great work Paul, it really is getting there now. I love the small Honda twin engine, nice and simple to work on. I would like to get my hands on a CB160 to restore as that was my very first bike and you never forget your first bike do you :)

No you don't mine was a Suzuki Stinger T125 again going for a fortune if you can get one :D
-
There is a lot to paint on these CD175's
Head lamp bowl
2 x side panels
Top & bottom chain guard
2 exhaust brackets
Rear mud guard and brackets (primed)
Front mud guard and brackets (primed)
Tank (primed)

It would be nice to have a spray booth / paint shop like that.

I've just been given a green house, my wives best mate is dying and it's not wanted by her family so I asked and got. Result. Might grow some tomatoes and peppers. Don't like tomatoes myself but the wife says home grown ones taste superb.
-
You asked for a dying persons greenhouse?😳😳
-
If they are brown and drooping they are probably dead.
You need to cut them off where the trunk is firm (not soggy and rotten) and they may grow back. That’s what I’m hoping.

Cheers Steve
defo worth a try.
-
You asked for a dying persons greenhouse?😳😳
No I asked my missus to ask her son if anyone wanted it, I knew none of them had green fingers so it would have been thrown or sold with the house. The son said he'd asked his brother and sister and neither wanted it so I could have it.
-
I use the greenhouse as a drying room it was nearly 70 deg in there on Sunday as the sun was fully on it.
Can you all do me a favour and delete any non related bike posts.
Yes Ken you cannot beat home grown toms Sungold my favourite.
-
Good use of a greenhouse…..drying room. I gave up on Toms and chillies, just didn’t have the green fingers.
-
Got more parts painted, lacquered and bolted on.
Didn't realise how much painting there is on one of these :o
Need to get in touch with Silvers regarding parts they say are superseded but DON'T FIT >:( >:(
-
That's coming on a treat Paul. 👍
-
Seeing that tank shape takes me back to my teenage 250 cc years.
Your build is looking very good Paul - I can breath in the nostalgia your photos generate.
Pretty sure the rear brake pedal is on the left in the photo so they must have been right side gear change - tbh I just can't remember.

Great job Paul, coming on lovey....
-
The angle of the photograph makes the rear brake arm look to be part of the rear spindle, I had to keep looking at it to reassure myself that's not the case.
Prestige did a stunning job on the chrome, some of that I thought was beyond replating.
Looking very nice Paul
-
Prestige have always been fantastic.
Diane can be a bit feisty if you get on the wrong side of her, but knows her job when it comes to chrome plating.
Not the quickest but always worth waiting on.
Would have no problems recommending them to anyone. ;D

Few more bits back on.
Rear light rebuilt and indicators.
Still looking for the hens tooth right exhaust ::)

Excellent work Paul. The sloper engine is very pretty.
I'm going to try Prestige as my plater in West London can no longer Chrome plate due to environmental issues.

Don't know why it took you so long to find them Paul 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
Well done.

Well done Paul .. so now you are a hoarder of a left hand ha ha !
When that guy cleared a property he must have thought all of his birthdays had come at once ... notice he had a set of NOS fork stanchions and a sloper engine with an SS125 carb fitted? Never seen that diaphragm carb fitted to a 175 before ... wonder if it worked OK?
-

Top job that Paul, well done. Like the colour scheme, something about gunmetal that just does it for me.

That really is a top job Paul, it looks stunning.
-
Great job Paul. Fantastic attention to detail, well done. What's the plan with this one after all the exhaust pain?
-
Awesome job on that Paul, well done that man, you must be very proud of that, I would be. 8)

Stunning 10/10. Must be super proud.
-
Looks like a new one Paul - also a great colour you must be well chuffed.
-
That’s a great looking bike there Paul! Nice work! 👍
Just checked out the post at start of thread to remind me of the condition when you recieved the bike. WoW!
-
That looks amazing. I was hoping to pick one of these up for my first restoration but the lack of exhaust availability put me off. Agree on the colour choice as well, first class.
-
Thanks for the comments everyone ;D
Will be keeping it for now but looking to move on the 750K1
Getting a bit heavy for me to move around the garage with my back.
Also need room for the next project.

That's a beauty Paul. Nice to see something a bit different. I know what you mean about the weight, it's becoming a common issue amongst our increasingly geriatric membership.

Cracking job Paul. That's my favourite colour too and was the colour of mine I had in 1972 but I painted mine Neptune Blue as it was Honda's press bike and Motor Cycle magazines review model OLA 4E and was it's original colour. It's in the second review here (for the MCM review they had to borrow one from a policeman as Honda UK had sold out :D) :-
https://www.dropbox.com/s/pmj1fju95l8xbtj/CD175%20Sloper%20Reviews.pdf?dl=0
Whats your next project Paul ? I suggest an S90 but be warned... LOTS of changes in that models relatively short run ... like 3 changes of exhaust from £400 NOS unobtainium to £130 NOS readily available from DS at £130. I am your man if you need advice.
-
What a lovely looking bike. I'm especially fond of the silver paintwork. Have you wheeled it into the living room? ;)
-
Nice to see bread and butter Honda's restored as well.
Well done indeed.
Will you be looking out for the correct right hand side tank badge and maybe consider fitting a ribbed pattern front tyre for originality?
-
I am awaiting the correct badges as they have 175 under the Honda logo, I have the correct ones that came with the bike but they have a small amount of pitting on them.
No choice of ribbed tyres for a 3x16inch very very limited choice.
-
Aye,
It's a bit of a challenge finding stuff for more obscure models but worth it in the end I believe.
I did wonder about the tyre size after posting that comment, it's easy to assume all those tyre sizes are still available as they used to be.
But even rear 19" tyres for my Commando are becoming difficult now as well.

Excellent job. Completed a CD175A restoration a number of years ago, but never sourced the original all plastic tank badges
Image attached of the my old original faded badges.

Thanks Alan.
Yep all the succeeded part numbers have the 175 bit missing.

Thanks Alan.
Yep all the succeeded part numbers have the 175 bit missing.
The superseded metal badges are from the JDM CB259K0 and Honda must have decided to sell these to replace the plastic badges as replacements on the earlier models that had plastic emblems with the model size on them.

Aye,
It's a bit of a challenge finding stuff for more obscure models but worth it in the end I believe.
I did wonder about the tyre size after posting that comment, it's easy to assume all those tyre sizes are still available as they used to be.
But even rear 19" tyres for my Commando are becoming difficult now as well.
Thanks for posting the photos.

I forgot to add to that I put the badges on the opposit sides so I didnnt get to like them and remind me that I still need to try and get the originals. ;D ;D

There is a pair on eBay Paul with the Honda wing with 175 underneath, unfortunately I’m on an iPad and have no idea how to copy and paste a link but the description reads For Honda ca175, cd175, cb175 K0, cl175 K0, fuel tank emblem l/r brand new, if that helps. They are repros but I suppose trying to find new genuine is asking a bit much these days.

Thanks Ken but at that price for repro's and £15 postage I'll let him keep them ;)

Wasn't those I saw Paul, took me a while to find, even searching for the exact wording didn't find it. However typing in CD175 tank badges in Google did for some strange reason.
These may be ok, I'm not sure, certainly cheaper than the one above. They have a very strange font on the Honda logo and a weird way of crossing the H in Honda. Might be the same as OE, I couldn't say.
