Next project to come.
1976 A4, sitting in a garage since 1983
-
Great find good luck with the project.
-
Fantastic find. I did one of those about 8 years ago and sold it 4 years later for what I thought at the time was a huge profit. The one I should have kept, today it is worth about three times what I sold it for. Will cost a packet to restore if the engine is not good though.
-
Ha ha!
Remember trying to fit mirrors on Ace bars?
We resorted to bar-end mirrors (see avatar)

Its a one-owner bike with complete historie, back to purchase and all services documented.
Frame and engine numbers are in those documents.
PO passed away so the bike was for sale.
Bike has 35 tkm.
Sitting for 35 years, would you open the engine and replace chain, rollers tensioners in any case?

Pour a little oil down the spark plug holes, leave it for a day or so - put it in gear and rock it (with plugs out) to make sure it's turning and not seized. If ok, then change the oil and filter and examine the contents, looking out for 'bits'. If ok, charge the battery and turn it over in short bursts without plugs in to get a good coating of new oil on the internals - then new plugs, clean the points, reset the gaps and fire it up and go from there I'd suggest.
Good to see another UK/Euro spec Z900 A4 coming to light, here's mine:

I may well be looking for a UK spec CB750K1 to replace the one I had in the mid-70's - here's my old 1971 K1 in Richmond Park in 1977 which was sadly written off (not by me) in 1989 - the eagle eye'd members will notice it had been fitted with chrome headlight stanchions:

Thanks for input. Engine and carbs are free. Yours look great. Euro spec is double disc, long rear fender and seat belt?
Looking for a tank with genuine paint in good condition.

Yes, some Euro countries, plus the rear indicators are fitted on chrome brackets on the rear grab rail, unlike the US model which fits them to the frame.
-
I have a tank for that type of Kawa.
No paint on it though.
Has been chemically cleaned already....
-
If engine is free take cam cover off and pour some oil over the cams before starting, this will ensure the cam lobes are lubed on start up process.
I have a 78 thou as Well as my little 350/4.
-
Yes. Good thing is, that can be done without taking out the engine :)
Menno: any chance to pull the dents and make a “smart” repair where the rust spot is?
A bit of voodoo, magic?
Will do a “soft” resto (or clean up) and try to keep as much genuine substance as possible.
-
BTW: not my first 900.
Sold this 1973 Z1 a few years ago in a moment of complete mental derangement

Oh my - that is pretty. I have two ‘72 z1 restorations I’ll be tackling next year...may need some advice Uli...
If Menno can’t help with the PDR, I’ve used a guy here in the Uk a couple of times with great success...

Did you get that English Z1 booklet I recommended?
MyZ1 was an unrestored bike with genuine paint. You call that a survivor.
Sometimes I wake up in the middle of the night.

A mate of mine has a 73 UK Z1, one of only 7 known to survive of the 44 UK Z1's Kawasaki imported into the UK in 1973, here's a couple of photos:
At Loomies, Moto Cafe, West Meon, Hampshire with a friend.......

Mate looks good.
Mine was a German bike. No idea, how many they sold.

So are they like the Brighton CB750s, or more like the Sandcasts?
What are the other bikes that fall into such a category?
Eamon really wanted me to buy an RRN FireBlade that a guy in Maidenhead was selling. It was good and a good price but I didn’t have the space. This was 10 years ago .
So what else will be astonishing the auctioneers in 30 years when we are all long gone and 70s bikes are treated like 40s bikes are now?
Of course, we’ll have young ‘uns like James to keep up the tradition

Well, I hope to still be around in 30 years even though I'll be 91, but I may have given up riding by then......... ;D
Who knows what'll capture the interest of classic bike buyers, maybe the first generation FireBlades, here's mine which will have to make way for a K1 one day - it's a UK 93 RRP:

Below sandcast, more like a K0.
A good 73 Z1 is around 17 t EURO. At least here in Germany.

In UK ... no idea.
Moonprice, I guess (as GBP 45.000 for a sandcast ::) ::))

Well heres a US import: https://www.motorcyclesunlimited.co.uk/1972-classic-kawasaki-z1-900-for-sale/

US spec bike. Very low number but anyway .....
Similar, but GBP 12.900 less

WOW !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
An A4 at GBP 20.989
With an after market repro exhaust. :'(

Completely nuts.
-
I will be looking at a Z900 A4 hopefully in the New Year (as thats the one I had back in the day) if my better half allows but I just wonder how these prices will hold up in the fullness of time when those of us at a certain age group move on. Will they still be in such demand with the younger generations in such numbers I wonder?

Hyper-inflation in UK?

Frank’s prices are always nuts.
I don’t know if he ever sells anything.
Actually, I don’t think he owns the bikes that he has for sale anyway.

I think most are commission sales?

I never took those moon prices for serious.
So what’s a realistic price for a Z1, K0 or sandcast in UK?

Not sure about sandcasts as I’m not looking to buy one but an awful lot of very poor Z’s are selling for silly money.

Vic World very early VIN Sandcast auctioned this month

Thanks.
Thats even less than I´d expect for a 3 digit sandcast here in G.

Or if you wanted a red one Uli ...ex-Frank (Motorcycles Unlimited)
https://www.bonhams.com/auctions/25250/lot/5/?category=list&length=10&page=1
Or a 1972 Z1

That red one looks to be comparable to mine.
Updated my price to 30.000 EURO

Slightly ironic - I think Frank sold his red Sandcast at the auction and bought both of the ‘72 Z1’s by the looks of it?

About the tank, I know someone in Germany who can get the dents out.
The rusty spot might be a bit of a chalenge since the paint is faded a bit but I could give it a try if you want to.
-
Bike still not here, Menno. No idea whats inside the tank.
When so I will come back to this.
That dent-puller is where you are?
That fade is dust.... hopefully.
-
Bike came in on Saturday (with lots of ducuments, even the purchase order and purchase invoice)
On first view I will need the following parts:
- tank in genuine paint
- number 3 (lower right) exhaust (with "........ 76" stamp)
- master brake cylinder
- right handle bar switch
- rear seat grip
Just in case somebodey has or knows somebody who does.
Try to keep as original as possible, so try to avoid replica parts.
-

-
Wow, what a find, still got o e exhausts, mine had them when I bought it, could 'nt wait to rip em off for a 4/1, other way around now
-
Found a set of correct "76" exhausts and rear euro grab.
Still searching a fuel tank in genuine paint

Uli - where the hell did you find a set of pipes for the bike?? Amazing.

Did some calls. Begging, crying, impending, sweet-talking, offering tons of money, offering my wife to do the household for a fortnight ...

:-) awesome. Congrats.

On second view, I needed the whole set of exhaust. Dings & dongs, scratches and holes.
Just in case, someone needs a "not perfect" set or may have them overhault, I´m offering those "76" that came with the bike:

pic after some days of TLC, still with the old pipes (not too bad from that angle)

update price: EURO 550 shipped for the pipes

pipes sold
Fuel tank found (plus tail)

Mostly finished. Some work and cosmetics to do.
Fired up without problems. I have a runner!
Next week MOT.
-
Looks great as usual from what I have seen with all your bikes. Heard the MOT in Germany ia very tough??
-
Another absolute beauty Uli. Great work again!!

Depends on the engineer examing the bike.
When you get a 30 year old that never saw an old nike like this, it can be time consuming.
With the Z1-R it was done in 10min. An old fart that had a Z1000R back in the days.

Thats a great looking Z, well done ;D
-
Beautiful bike.....I remember seeing my first Z900 (same colour as yours) back in 1975 on holiday in Paignton. My Wife had to drag me away after 10 minutes..................thinking I was crackers.............I was.....about the Z900 !
Still an awesome machine all these years later.....talk about 'Getting it right first time' ! The nice thing abut this Honda Forum is that most Members can see the beauty of other makes, and spectacularly special machines.
-
Passed the MOT.
Today first roll-out.
-
What a beauty Uli..
-
Stunning bike!
-
You've done a good job there Uli, take a bow that man!
Cheers
Andrew

Remember trying to fit mirrors on Ace bars?
We resorted to bar-end mirrors (see avatar)

Just learned from the A4 parts book that German and French A4 had those chrome mirrors. Didn’t knew that because you never seen them here with those mirrors but I wondered why that bike came with them.
Will change that immediately!
-
Probably the best looking Jap bike of all time IMO, I saw one of the new retro jobs on show next to an original Z1, the original made the new one look bloated and clumsy, great bike Uli.
-
Chromspiegel 8)
-
Sie sehen großartig aus, viel zu den Originalspiegeln
-
Two steps ahead, one step back.. decided to have the pipes and the front fender re-chromed and replace the rear stay with a better one I found.
-
That is the rear stay to be sold.
Is that the German only version with those blinker ears or European market?
-

UK spec too Uli, here's my 76 UK Z900.
Cheers
Andrew
-
Thanks.
So the (european) parts book is wrong.
Shows that stay with ears for Itlaly only and the one withour ears for UK, Germany, France etc.
Should say the other way round.
-
Is that because they have no use for indicators in Italy?

I understand their reversing lights are extremely good... :-X

Did you know Mercedes and Audi are saving a fortune not fitting indicators as their drivers never use them!

Finished the A4 today.
Had the "76" pipes and the front fender re-chromed. New blinkers and stems. Took the short rear stems.
Misc. stuff with new zinc.
Got that hazzard light work.
Fianl expection please

Stunning attention to detail Uli. Great work as always..

Thank you, master.
