If you have stripped the advance/retard unit, have you got the cam on wrong? ie 180 degrees out.

For a long storage, I use the drain plugs to empty the carbs. rather than just run them dry, I have seen the "rot" that long term that modern petrol residues can cause, even to alloy and brass in some cases.

Don't always blame the sun or fuel, I fitted an after market battery strap on my 400/4 from a larger on line vendor, and it was cracked and rotting before the bike left my garage. I think some manufacturers see profit before suitable material for our old but loved machines.

They fall between the rear of the engine casing and the frame, and are held together in a square shaped plastic former.

I use a small scissor lift with a shaped wood top under the engine/frame, this takes the weight off both tyres when stood in the garage.Below is similar, but mine hasn't got wheels.
