Other Bikes / Repair on flywheel magnet
« on: September 22, 2019, 08:32:00 PM »
I have been trying to locate a replacement flywheel rotor for my Z1300, and seem to be unable to find the correct one, also no one does repairs on them. My question is the magnets are complete but one has a crack across it, the crack is not on any of the 2 holes that are used for the ignition pick ups, if I was to seal the crack and around the magnet with epoxy would the flywheel still function properly, I know I would be putting another North- South joint in one of the magnets, would this affect the charging or would the magnetic field still be sufficient to correctly charge the system , has anyone any experience with this as when searching the net people say it will ,but have not backed it up with either experience or Electrical knowledge.

Misc / Open / Getting a Q plate changed to an age related plate.
« on: May 27, 2019, 01:08:37 PM »
Has anyone successfully got a Q plate on a bike changed to an age related plate. The reason I ask is I have just bought a kawasaki from a mate that is Q plated, it has not been on the road since 1996, I am going to apply for a v5 using the frame number as I have told Swansea that I bought the bike without any paperwork, the guidelines say that a Q plate is issued to a vehicle that you cant determine the age, I know that the bike is a 1980 by the frame number and I believe it was Q plated in 1985 because the engine was damaged beyond repair much the same as a newer bike now would be classed as a cat C or D but now still retains its original reg. I am hoping that they cant find any trace of the plate and tell me to re- register the bike when I get it mot'ed I would be grateful to hear if anyone has had any success with this.

CB350/400 / Xring drive chain
« on: May 02, 2019, 08:54:51 PM »
I am bringing up the subject of drive chains, I finished my bike last year and have done about 1200 miles on it, following information I was told that if you fit a standard 530 xring chain the extra width causes it to rub on the fillets in the engine case. My problem is the plain chain I have fitted is a piece of junk compared to the x ring chains I have on my other bikes. Has anyone managed to successfully fit an x ring chain either by fitting a 525 chain, maybe fitting a spacer between the sprocket to bring it away from the casing, or by dressing a bit from the crankcase where the rivets touch, im sure someone must have successfully fitted a modern chain to a 400 four. I have looked at my friends RD350 ypvs which kicks out a lot more power than the 400 four and it only has a 520 chain it would seem to me that the 530 recommended for the 400 four seems a bit heavy as this is the size used on modern sports bikes I think I will try his chain on my bike when I get home to see how it fits.

CB350/400 / Advancer cam
« on: February 06, 2019, 07:52:29 AM »
I am going to fit Accent Electronic ignition to my 400 I have been running one on my Kettle for 3 years without a hiccup my question is when I contacted Uwe at Accent he asked if my advancer cam was 13mm or 15 mm, I know there were 2 different types used could some clarify where it is I measure I would assume it would be the bore of the actual cam from memory it is shaped like a top hat and can be removed by taking off the bolt and opening the weights on the springs. Thanks in advance.

CB350/400 / voltage regulator
« on: May 21, 2018, 09:36:38 AM »
I am in the middle of doing the wiring on my bike, I have had the engine running which appears to be OK but my question is about the voltage regulator when I took the bike apart only 1 wire was connected to the regulator and the other 2 were bridged, I have since reconnected the 3 wires correctly to the regulator, does anyone know why these would have been bridged out, and does anyone have experience of replacing the old regulator with a more modern version.

Misc / Open / Classic insurance
« on: April 13, 2018, 09:37:30 AM »
This is a question that is asked often on the various classic bike forums that I am a member of. Everyone is on about the prices ect, just one question has anyone ever made a claim on any of these different classic policies, I have found that with cars you may get cheap policies but some of them are very reluctant to pay out and will do anything to avoid it, it would be beneficial for everyone to be recommended a company that has gave good service after a claim has been made. Has anyone got any good or bad stories about making a claim on a classic bike.

CB350/400 / Carburetor Main jets
« on: April 12, 2018, 05:26:22 AM »
I am going to be overhauling and ultrasonically cleaning my carbs when I get home I have overhaul kits, I am fitting a Marshal deeptone tailpipe to a standard set of headers so I am thinking a good place to start would be with 80 main jets any thoughts on this and where abouts can you buy them in the UK.

Me and one of my friends are thinking of driving down on Sunday 22nd for the Stafford bike show, I read somewhere that this show is mostly for old British stuff and the more Japanese one is in Sep, is this so or is it still worth a 520 mile round trip.

CB350/400 / Looking forward to getting home to finish my bike
« on: April 10, 2018, 10:35:03 PM »
Im hoping to get my bike finished, when I get home from offshore, if I can sort my main bearings Im about 5 and half Grand out so far, I have the frame and bits powder coated, the sump, oil filter and crankcases powder coated , I've respoked the wheels with stainless rims and spokes, rebuilt the clocks, lots of new bearings and internals in the engine, rechromed headers, and a nearly new looking 1980's Marshal deeptone pipe, the Bike is an F2 but I got it painted the ruby red the same as my original from 1981 ( my thumbnail of me at 17), so roll on home time.

CB350/400 / Main bearing shells
« on: April 10, 2018, 10:09:02 PM »
When I get back home I am ready to put my engine back together, I have had difficulty finding the numbers on my crankshaft, I will have another look but I was thinking of measuring the thickness of the old shells to see what colour they are, I will also check the new ones with plastigage, what are the availability of the different shells can they still be got, I got these dimensions from the American site.

Yellow inserts (the thinnest) are 1.490 to 1.486  mm thick

Green inserts are 1.494 to 1.490

Brown inserts are 1.498 to 1.494

Black inserts are 1.502 to 1.496

According to the book there are also Blue and red bearings does anyone have these sizes.

CB350/400 / Rear chainguard Question
« on: April 08, 2018, 03:42:09 AM »
Does anyone know if the rear chainguard round plate that is riveted to the original sprocket from any other models fits the 400 four as I would like to fit one but they seem rather hard to come by.

Misc / Open / No MOT required
« on: March 31, 2018, 10:04:42 PM »
As of May this year Historic vehicles wont require a valid MOT, but beware. The only thing about the MOT is if you have an accident the insurance will use it as an excuse to hold back from paying out, I have heard several stories from boys with pre 1960's vehicles and the first thing the insurance asks is do you have a valid MOT even though it is not required by law, I now have 3 bikes that don't require an MOT shortly and due to the amount of money tied up in them I think it would be prudent to get them MOT ed as then there are no arguments about  them being roadworthy.  As you know insurance companies will do anything to avoid paying out, how many old rusty land rovers and ex farm vehicles that haven't been on the road for 15 years do you think are going to get pulled out and taxed, the insurance companies will not differentiate between these and a motor cycle that has been pampered. There is also the bike that has had a lot of money spent on it and looks good but has been put together by someone whose Engineering skills are maybe not as good as they think, think of the bikes you have bought that look good and when you look close they are death traps.
