The domestic steam cleaning machines with single nozzle do a reasonably good job of getting oil based grime out of nooks and crannies.

Or wall paper stripper/steam thing.  Always nervous about sloshing flammable stuff around inside buildings.  :o

Just get a drip tray underneath to let it flush down.

I'd love to go there but too many commitments to attend.

Hope it's a good show.

If you've much span between piers for the 5inch joists then it won't take much to bend them.

7inch is generally ok for decent floor support.  Unless you're going to have more piers to prevent centre sagging.

The ply seems OK,  we used 19 or 25 on batterns to support some fairly hefty machine on false floor in a factory.

Looks like you've got a good couple of cam choices there on those ones.

As well as the lobe tip,  I usually judge it on the base circle to see if original machining is there as it indicates if it's been run with too little valve clearance. Normally a good sign for general cam health if ok.

Good for you to pick up those other parts at low cost Andy.

I was with some Triumph blokes the other week,  one of them owns a factory production racer with numbers and original reg plate.

Another one claiming to be that very bike turned up for sale! The owner had, in recent times, applied for and received the original reg based on numbers! So two now apparently exist  :) the original was obviously refused it's own plate it seems as it had been off the road for so long.

All very tangled.

CB350/400 / Re: cb400f - carb sync
« on: February 13, 2019, 12:17:32 PM »
The synchro routine has virtually nothing at all to do with jetting. It's just to get parity across the four carbs,  and hence cylinders, to make sure that during use the engine is running with all four pulling equally.

Mixture is controlled by the jets, needle position and trimming pilot circuit with screws to get each part of the range correct.

Yes to just getting all vac levels to match and don't worry about absolute reading. If absolute is really far out when running then it would bring up different questions about engine condition, possibly. But certainly wouldn't worry about it at this stage.

Also interested in seeing the bike through build Roy.

Appreciate the effort it takes to document process as well as doing it.

Cautious optimism then, hope it's going to run without issue this time.

To be ultra cautious regarding running hot if that's the case. Worth considering the plug temp grade given that it holed a piston in one of it's previous builds.
Overheating the plug tip can lead to pre-ignition which puts the piston crown at risk.  I wouldn't run the lower range 7 NGK choice but either 8 or even 9 if that's in the manual for this engine.  Don't know what you've got in it but the higher numbers will give you more safety margin if they run ok.

Think the F2 has half the number of drains from head back to sump (stand to be corrected)  trying to keep oil retained to prevent guide wear maybe?

If oil level is higher around valve stem,  then with any wear they just smoke more.

I've go it!

It's a dry sump conversion  ;D

Must intend to go racing or summink, I've heard they use them for that sort of thing.

Some years ago a neighbour caught a car alight in his garage while working on the fuel/carbs. He had to get out as it took hold plus a load of paint he had added to the inferno.

It was absolutely ferocious, shockingly so, and took everything the fire brigade had to save the adjoining house.

It certainly impressed on me to do things like that outside to reduce the risk. Very scary if it goes wrong.

Be good if you could do that,  endless possibilities  :)

My son has a similar plan to go and buy bitcoin, reasoning that if he got it right he could then buy anything he wanted with the proceeds. Currently studying economics at school  ;D
