Title: CB650 coils
Post by: florence on November 19, 2009, 11:40:28 AM
Does anyone know if CB650 coils will work on CB500/4?

I notice they have detachable HT leads which must be a good thing.  My original Circa 1975 leads are dreadfull in the rain.

I think the cb650 uses cdi ignitin rather than points in which case I'd doubt they'd work. Most assesories / parts dealers will carry points suitable coils that may be possible to fit, david silvers for brand new coils that are 'correct' but my 500/4 came with a brand new set fitted and had cost the PO almost hundred quid. Anything off a pionts ignition bike should work. It is possible to glue new leads into the 500's original coils but it's a pain to do and I've never been completely happy to trust the results.

There's a FAQ on sohc4.net that shows how to open up the coils and repair them with new leads.

Also, some on there have successfully used CB750/900 DOHC coils that have detachable leads (but need a bit of metalwork/bracketry to fit)

Thanks chaps, I will not bid on those ebay 650 coils then.  Grateful for the advice.
