Title: 4 into 1 Exhaust
Post by: stesjh on December 31, 2017, 02:16:36 PM
Hi guys, after a exhaust for my 1979 CB650. The one I currently have is fine but very load. Was wondering if I need to replace the whole system or whether I can just replace the end can? Not sure what make the exhaust is but someone may recognise it from the picture. Thanks in advance.

It doesn't look like there is an "End can" on it, looks like someone has just hacked the end off a Motad or similar! Are there any markings on the exhaust anywhere that you can see?

Thanks for the response. I have had a closer look and there doesn't appear to be any markings, therefore I am thinking that this probably is a 'homemade' system? Can anyone recommend where I could get a similar system?

i have a 4-1 from a cb750f2 that i keep tripping over. if someone can confirm it will fit, you can have it.

That would be great - thank you, can someone confirm whether this would fit?

Probably not without a fair bit of cutting and welding. 750 engines are considerably taller than the 500/550/650 motors, so even if the downpipes fit the exhaust ports ((which I seem to remember they don't) the vertical drop from the exhaust ports is quite a bit longer, which could result in them grounding out on bumpy roads, not a good thing to have happen. Can you not fashion some kind of baffling/end can yourself from a similar diameter piece of tube/old exhaust?

You don't need much in the way of baffling to make a big difference. I bought a cheap nasty exhaust for the CG and it was far to load.
I cut the kitchen broom handle down and drilled a series of holes into it it now sounds stock.
Don't try it with a wooden handle as I don't think it will work as well. ;)

I cut the "silencer" off my 400/4 completely, then welded a reducing piece, example as below, into the exhaust stub with an end diameter suitable for a standard after market silencer, that allowed me to fit a silencer of my choice
