Hi All

I am looking for a complete air box assembly for a 1976 CB550f1.

Currently running on foam pods but want to go back to stock system.

If anyone is modding their bike and are stripping these parts out please let me know. Obviously more than willing to pay.

I’ve been over in the states for a month and whilst away the body control unit in the van decided to have a bad hair day so until it goes in on Thursday to the auto electricians I’m on the bike. Bbbbrrrrr!

I am however, having overheating issues so about ready to go back in there and see what the coo is. There’s a number of things to check and hoping it shouldn’t be too bonkers but it’s an interesting fault.

It’s only doing it in traffic and as you know, they run hot anyway. It it’s creeping up there but more than it should so it’s either rad cap, cracked transfer pipe, thermostat, water pump or thermostat switch on the fan. Bit to check but I should get it.

Another winter on it has taken its toll on the fasteners and a few are buggered so the plating bath is needing to come out at some point but it can wait a while yet. Really chuffed with the engine though as like I say, running like an absolute train with a flick of the wrist. How’s yours after effectively de-tuning it for the LEV. Any noticeable difference?

In the end he got a full set up from a mate of his that was cafe-ing his bike so still got a complete set up here for another member should they need one. Like you say though, power of the forum rocks doesnt it?

The ULEZ compliance faff caused no issues whatsoever as I took it to a place in Stevenage run by an ex racing god so he knew exactly what to do to make it compliant. Basically all he did was lean off the fuel injection on a closed throttle and it was done, passed with no other mods. The guy in Bow said it would need a cat fitted at £350 plus the £175 for the initial test and another £75 for a retest. Daylight robbery.
I rode it at 15mph for 12 miles a couple of weeks ago as I was in the funeral procession for Mike Harrington of HGB who sadly passed. It ran absolutely fine but did get up to 95c at some points but as you say, all Viffers get hit under the collar, great in winter though to keep you warm😊

I had it in my Ducati and the ZX-7R I had Ted, I haven’t put it back into the VFR yet as still fiddling but I will it’s awesome stuff. My pal has it in all his race bikes; crossers and road bikes and works brilliantly. Its only downfall is the cost but it all depends on what you want out of a coolant where you are. I shouldn’t think the lads up in the Orkney Islands wouldn’t need it but it’s common to find bikes in the continent and the states using it for obvious reasons

Might just need burping but I think it’s the rad cap leaking air causing the pressure to drop and not pull fluid from the overflow back to the rad as there’s no hiss when you open the cap. It is 22 years old after all and she’s been ridden quite hard over the years with some monster miles on her now so wouldn’t surprise me but I’ll do the full checks and see what the coo is.

When I bought mine back in 2016 the guy had changed the thermostat after the original failed. Trouble was he fitted the wrong one and on my ride back to London from Halifax (where I bought it) it ran very hot with the rad fan not coming on until 110c. I changed it out for a proper one and it's run fine since with the fan cutting in between 95-98c.
Best bike Honda ever made (apart from the yellow 400/4’s of course 😁).

Post by: Bryanj on March 04, 2024, 10:56:03 PM: The electric switches that turn then fan on are notorious for crudding up on th GL bikes and if they are the same that could be it, they are also ,i think, in the earth side of the fan so grounding the wire should turn the fan on

Apparently is a common fault across a heap of manufacturers, especially the Suzuki’s and Aprilia’s. Thanks for the heads up tjough pal.

Post by: Laverdaroo on March 06, 2024, 10:25:19 PM: combination of that so the fans working now and the thermostat was stuck open so ordered a new one today, pig to get to as its under the injector bank so had to dig deep but in a bowl of warm water, no movement............think I got it.

Cheers though Bryan, as ever, you need to remove everything to get to the bit thats shagged ;D
