CB500/550 / 1978 CB550 four
« on: March 11, 2024, 02:08:25 PM »
Hi,
I just finished re-conditioning my carbs.......I labelled the throttle cables 'top' and 'bottom'.
The 'top' cable pushes when you open the throttle  whilst the 'bottom'  cable pulls . I have the carbs and air box reinstalled.
I am having difficulty re-fitting cables just wondering is there an easy way to do this? and do I have orientation of cables correct?

Thanks in advance

CB500/550 / 1978 CB550 FOUR AIR BOX CONFUSION

Hi sorry for the hassle but I have confused myself.
I have attached a diagram of air box which I have numbered 1 to 4 in red .
I have a few questions, if I may:
Number 1 ( part 23) . Where does this go to? Can I block this port off ( see number 2)
Number 2 ( part 22) . I think this id the breather for the Crankcase and should be attached to crank case? However I am thinking of doing away with this, allowing crancase breather tube to hang loose and blocking port on airbox.
Number 3: ( part 17) does this tube hang loose from port on part 12?
Number 4 : which bolt goes here? i.e 15,14,3 etc

Apologise for my lack of knowledge !

Thanks in advance
Brian

CB500/550 / 1978 USA import CB550 K4 PD46C CARB
« on: January 21, 2024, 03:32:11 PM »
I have got my self confused just wondering can you please check the picture and my identification oof carb parts:
1. air mixture screw (1 1/2 turns out)
2. Slow jet/pilot jet ????
3.main jet & emulsion tube

If identifications are correct, how do I remove slow jet, as I want to check sizes. Should be 42.
I checked main jet sizes, one was 98 and the other 3 were 90's. Obviously should all be same size.
Also what position should jet needle be? I am getting conflicting information on the web . Some say the needle can't be adjusted on the PD46C carb and some say they can?

Thanks in advance

Hi,
I haven't got my bike that long and am giving it the once over.

The air box element ( part no. 17352374003) is missing.
I can't find this part anywhere on-line as it seems to be discontinued with no alternative.
Can anyone advise? can these be homemade etc?

CB500/550 / 1978 CB550 K4 carb choke spring
« on: January 19, 2024, 03:50:54 PM »
The spring in the photograph ( not my carb) is missing and replaced with copper wire hack.
I finally found a replacement spring have hunting one down of eBay.

Can anyone point in the right direction of how to replace this spring i.e. how do you remove and replace choke linkage?
They are PD 46A carbs

Thanks in advance

CB500/550 / stator overheating

1978 Cb550 four K3 ( American import)

Hi,
I am a newbie to the forum.

Recently bought the bike above, soon after the stator burnt out, got stator rewound, and it burnt out again.
I managed to find another unused original stator and replaced the regulator and rectifier with a 2 into one reg/rec (bought from David Silver parts). I did not do the work on this bike, an experienced mechanic did.
Also fitted with electronic ignition.

The stator side casing is now running extremely hot, so hot that you cannot touch it for more than a second.
I don't want to ride bike in case I do damage....is the heated casing normal?

Thanks

Brian
