Title: Head Gasket Advice
Post by: CB5501977K3 on November 19, 2019, 08:07:36 PM
Hi
My 550's head gasket was sweating and I was getting an oily deposit around the joint.
I am in the middle of lapping in my exhaust valves and will soon be reassembling my 550 engine. I have ordered a genuine Honda head gasket but was wondering if copper spray improves the sealing and gives the head gasket a longer life?

Has anyone tried these products and if so what do you think.

Chris

If its a genuine Honda head gasket, it will be sticky on both sides and have a sticky, squidgy centre and nothing else should be applied, it will stick well enough anyway.

Thanks for the prompt response, it's not arrived yet but didn't know it was sticky.
I am new to the forum and this is my first query - think I will find it very useful.

Thanks
Chris

Hope you ordered the O rings as well! And dont forget to read the manual several times until you understand properly how to refit the cam cover or you will bend valves

Noted re the O rings comment, are the pattern ones not too good?
I ordered a pattern top end rebuild kit but a genuine Honda head gasket as forum members report issues with non genuine head gaskets.

You didnt say you had ordered a set, just the head gasket. Used to have difficulty convincing people you cant change just the gasket!

For the record I just spent ages fixing a similar oil bleed. I would advise a head skim whilst you are doing all this work as well. Only cost me £30 at my local machine shop and finally fixed oil seepage that a number of head gasket and o ring changes failed to fix. I had oils seeping from around the timing chain area by the way so I knew it was not down to head gasket o ring mismatch

If the gasket leaks from the chain area, it is always the head has bowed from over heating and a skim is required  ;)
