That's sad, it must have been someone's pride and joy at one time, though it is good that you have rescued it.

Cheers

I would take the K0 reflectors off the fairing before trying to sell it, worth a few bob these days  ;)

Was alcohol involved?  ;)

Having bought a basket case previously I stayed well clear but noticed it popped up in the various CB750 searches I randomly have running on ebay constantly

Racing buttons on the gudgeons? has the engine/bike got history?

Interesting, looks like a big bore kit on it, looks like the "New" idea in the 70's of Teflon plugs as opposed to circlips in the pistons, maybe it's just the photo though. Not going to be a cheap resto, but I will follow with great interest!

Lot of work Paul but as you have previously proved - doable. Its actually very similar to the way my K2 came but without the fairing and mine where bare crankcases.
Whats the  bellmouths like as I'm on the lookout for some for the CR rep - if your not using them

And fitted to CB750's.... Click (http://www.ezimport.co.jp/product.php?id=k277409910) if anyone would like to fit a set ££££££  8)

Personally, if building a nice usable but not concourse bike I would keep them as they are period goodies.

Well the bike is all stripped and parts ready for powder coating and chroming.
Polished the hubs and started the re-build on the wheels.
Still looking for a set of barrels to get the engine strip and rebuild under way.

Graham the crank and con rod assembley was a replacement unit from Hadley custom with less than 3k miles on it before the bike was taken off the road.
This was all on the paperwork that I received with the bike and after inspecting it there wasn't a mark on it.
I replaced the shells etc because it was prudent to do so whilst I was in there.

Nothing!
I was in a engineering company a month or so ago. When a guy bought a engine in from his BSA with a bill of full rebuild. He had bought the bike off fleabay and the engine had blown up within 300 miles, and had bought the bike with the understanding that it had just had the engine fully rebuilt.
As i moved to the side of the counter, the owner of the company looked at the bill and said, That is not my headed note paper   :o :o

Nice job Paul ! Looking spot on... I notice in the Hadleigh custom sheet it says 'Big ends only ground'...does that mean they reground the crank and fitted non-standard, undersize bearing shells/modified the con rods in some way? If so, it may explain the bolts protruding slightly more than normal.

Ash,
No there are four sets of green shells and one Yellow.
The rods that have been fitted are also not OEM ones they are uprated ones as the bike was also fitted with a Henry Abe 900cc big bore kit.

They use a really aggressive sharpening strategy in small digital imaging chips to make the end result "appear" sharper than its resolution will allow.  It makes everything look sharper at small final image size but if you zoom in it shows loss of details.  In effect a digital trick to maximise the small form of the originating device. All controlled by an algorithm string/sequence.

I can well imagine Paul. When trig has been polishing he comes in looking like he's been down a coal mine. Even with all the goggles / resperstors on, he seems to end up with black eyeliner which takes days to disappear. He doesn't really like polishing and saves it all up and does it for 8 hours at a time !!

That is a proper shine :)

Do you clear coat it to keep it like that, or just accept the need for shares in Solvol to keep it looking nice?

I think my choice of a black engined variant is down to my dislike of polishing! It looks so good when it's fresh......

Fantastic progress Paul and all coming together nicely.

Interesting you mention John Street Platers, as that's the firm that a friend of mine has used for many, many years.

The place I always use took 5 weeks to do the plating below and he told me on Wednesday that if I give him some more it will be at least 4 weeks (he told me 3 weeks last time - 5 weeks in reality). Can you share prices please ? As an example this stuff cost £65 (paid him in readies).

Blimey Ash, I would be happy to pay £65 for that lot. Did you have to do any prep work yourself. If not, that's cheap as chips.

I thought the guy I use is cheap but I doubt if he could better £65 for all that! I would be tempted to stick with him Ash and maybe pay him an extra tenner to knock a week or two off the timescales.

Well he likes me because I  solvent degrease, then use my alkaline  'Witches Brew' (described in full on here) to remove the old zinc plate then I dry bead blast with 0/44 glass beads. Even though I am a tight Yorkshireman it's not the price it's the lead time that is stretching out. It used to be 2 weeks. Last time I gave him twice as much as that and it was £80 !! Problem is,  if you are short of an odd bit 5 weeks is too long to wait. Guess I should get my old home plating rig out for the odd bits I need in a hurry. I tried to get him to sell me  a couple of litres of plating electrolyte  but he said that he couldn't due to H&S reasons.
Title: Re: NEW PROJECT CB750 K1
Post by: royhall on August 18, 2018, 12:51:37 PM
I had a feeling he was only doing the plating at that price. Stick with him he's cheap. I had the linkages for a 750F2 carb set done at Lancaster Bronze that cost me £30 and I had to wait 9 weeks for them to post back as agreed. That never happened so it was a 65 mile round trip to go and get them. They won't be getting any more work off me.

Ash pricing Hmmm
I have been twice now and bartered with them on both occations.
If you just turn up it is a cash job don't know on how it goes if its sent in and booked in.
First lot was took in Monday and I collected Friday.
The second job I took in Monday and picked it up Wednesday.
Looking at what you have in that tub I would say through the door cheaper !! ;D

It'll never run right with the number 3 written at 90 degrees to the numbers on the other pistons. My OCD whacked me around the head when I saw that.

Seriously though, great quality work. Will you use the Vesrah head gasket, or get a genuine Honda one? I did, on advice from here, it cost twice what the whole complete gasket set cost (from CSM), but was a sticky finish, and doesn't leak.

Ha ha i'm feeling the wrath of too many questions to Graham  ;) ;) In my defence I didn't strip the engine/bike down and the manuals are as Graham said burn them to keep warm.
Has he chilled out now ;D ;D
Yes Paul, he's playing with his own 'O' rings now so all calm again 😀😀😀😀
Are they the Orings he put in my box  ;D ;)

Well, someone put them in your box  ;D ;D He had me hunting high and low for them. I couldn't believe he didn't have any more in stock until he said they were the square 'O' rings and you had ended up with the whole bag of them  ::) ::) ::)

Paul - really don’t want to ‘piss on your fire’ as you’re doing a super job, but it looks like you’re using the reproduction/non-genuine intake rubbers / clamps from DSS.

Just keep a close eye on them as I have two previous attempts using them, both resulting in chasing air leaks due to poor sealing/manufacturing tolerances. This was after 6 months of light use. Same with the repro fork gaiters, which develop hairline cracks/degraded after 6 months.

I’m not knocking DSS - they do a good job at helping us restore these bikes/keep them on the road, but worth noting where to tread carefully..

Take the above as you will - just wanted to share my thoughts..

James,
Not an issue all info greatly received.
They are not repro ones and they wasn't from silvers either James.
I got the originals from a company in Germany you can see the bags for the clamps and dust rubbers in one of the pictures.
I will keep an eye on them all the same as I did have an issue with some for the 400/4 from the said company;) ;)

I used genuine honda inlet rubbers on my rebuild and i suffered from airleaks. Had to modify the clamps to ensure they put sufficient compression on the rubbers...clamps were gen honda too.. Not an uncommon problem either. Nice looking build by the way  8) good work!

Great job on them Paul, i love that finish. I need to do my CB400/4 ones really, i will get round to it one day. Trig makes a fantastic job of refurbing all the switch gear for our restorations but i would like to have a go myself. I get in a bit of a mess with paint though 😀😀😁

Looking great. Like Julie, I'd be interested to know what paint you have used. Do you 'flood' the on/off etc with red paint using a thin brush and wipe off the excess?
Post a pic of the finished article, the Z650 looks a stunning job.

Yep I use the Simoniz tough black satin paint and then humbrol enamel. I just use a cocktail stick to flood the text and leave it for ten mins or so. Wipe off the excess very lightly with some paper towel with a bit of turps on it. The turps takes off the excess enamel but does not affect the black. You must get every bit of the old paint out of the text. I use a scalpel for this.

Well what can I say about the miracle Peter (kent400) has done on the clocks.
They were in a terrible mess and what a transformation he has done painstakingly restoring these to near perfection.
Anyone thinking of attempting this work themselves just save yourself a load of heartache and get them sent off to Peter I cannot recommend him highly enough.

That looks fantastic Paul. Can you feel the decals through the clear coat or have they flattened it out?

I didn't say it didn't like it 🙄🙄🙄 I'm just checking what came with red (I don't know why I'm bothering as I'm changing my original ruby red to Planet Blue anyway).😀😀😁😀  What parts list are you going by?

It is a strange one Paul and i would not like to comment on a red UK, K1 as, i have never seen a red one up close and personal. I know that the gold UK, K1 had the white badges.
All the original red  UK, K2's that i have ever seen had black badges on the red tank, i think RGP,s K2 had them also.

Absolutely no idea Paul, they were fitted when I bought it - but maybe to make it look younger or due to an accident?

Look away you purists, I updated my K1 with chrome headlamp brackets, K2 style rear light, a 4 into 1, sprayed it white, fitted a 900 conversion and fitted clip ons, it's what we did in those days.

Well a momentous weekend on the UK K1 project which has finally come to completion after 18 months.
Got to say it has been a pleasure working on it bringing a basket case back to life and hopefully keeping another one alive for many more years.
I would like to thank everyone for their help especially Graham and Julie as these things would be much harder without the expert advice which is available on this site probably involving building things up then redoing it a second time.
The garage is now well and truly full and something will have to go before I can start another project.

Looks fantastic Paul and a real credit to you. A very difficult project but just shows what perseverance, hard work and a 3rd Mortgage can achieve 😀😀😀. Trig has your next project already lined up for you 😭😭😭 A rare bike and one that you should be very proud to own. Great work 👍👍👍

I know everyone has their favourite size of 4 cylinder Honda,  but with these 750 looking so well finished you can see completely why they made such a huge impact on motorcycling.

Superb.
