CB500/550 / Chain rubbing against stand
« on: June 05, 2018, 07:32:19 PM »
Hi all,

I took my cb500 out for the first time, and i noticed a noise coming from the chain rubbing against the stand. It comes very far up and I can't see what is supposed to stop it from doing so. Any ideas?

Cheers

Hi everyone,

Does anyone know what I could replace the stock lock washers on the rear wheel with? Maybe I'm being picky but they look like they need a change.

Hi all,

Could anyone please tell me what the markings are on the bolts that hold up the caliper pivot arm to the stachion, I lost mine and i dont know what strength they need to be. #20 and #21 in the link.

https://www.cmsnl.com/honda-cb500k1-four-general-export_model14659/partslist/F06.html#results

I can see that in the cmsnl picture they have what looks like a 10 is that a 10.9 or 8.8 grade bolt.

CB500/550 / Gauge Dampening
« on: December 09, 2017, 11:15:29 PM »
Hi everyone,

I have my gauges apart for refurbishing, and I refilled the pot on the speedometer with 50,000 cst sillicone oil. While it is better than it was, it's still not as damped as the speedometer which I haven't touched. Does anyone know if this is normal or have I gone wrong somewhere?

Thanks

CB500/550 / Cylinder sucking noise
« on: November 28, 2017, 05:37:57 PM »
Hi all,

After going back and forth with this engine I discovered that my number 4 makes a sucking noise when cranked which the others don't seem to make. This is also present when running. I took a compression test and it is similar to the others. Could it be my intake valve not closing properly?

I took a video of cranking it by hand

Would love to know what the experts think

CB500/550 / Various teething problems
« on: September 22, 2017, 04:41:36 PM »
Hello everyone,

I'm a year in my restoration and I got her started and she seems to work ok for most part however there is a clack or whistle that can be heard by the carburetors that I don't know what to make of. I've never heard one of these engines up close before. Could someone look at this video and tell me if she sounds ok.

https://youtu.be/5VnLKPBvT1w

Also she doesn't seem to want to run with the choke closed and I'm wondering if this is due to the air screws. Any tips for properly setting them or do the carbs need to be balanced for that?

Another odd  thing is that the oil light seems to go out when it runs and then immediately come back on when I stop the engine. As I understand it should take a few seconds.

Any advice would be appreciated.

CB500/550 / First start-up after rebuild
« on: July 29, 2017, 06:14:23 PM »
Hi everyone!

So I'm nearing the point of being ready to start her up again after a full teardown (thanks for all your help in getting me here by the way). Before I do I was wondering if it is worth while taking the rocker cover off and pouring oil in the tray. I did coat the rockers and bearings with assembly grease but it has sat for a couple of months since the assembly. I also gave it a few pumps with the kick starter to see if oil flowed to the top (i think it does but not 100% sure).

Otherwise I'm looking for general tips for first start up. I have put in wear in oil and will be changing it afterwards. What is the usual ring seating procedure and anything else I should be mindful of?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

CB500/550 / Tyres
« on: July 05, 2017, 07:34:38 PM »
Hey guys!

I'd like to replace the tyres that came with the bike. So the manual says it takes front/back 3.25-19 /3.5-18 but I don't know what speed or weight rating I should go for. From the research I've done the Heidenau K34 seem to be the most appropriate.

Does any one have any recommendations? Can I fit a 3.5-19 on the rear wheel?

Much appreciated

CB500/550 / Cracked drum liner
« on: June 24, 2017, 07:26:39 PM »
Hey everyone!

I have been trying to get the back wheel on but if it isn't one thing it was another. I discovered a minor crack in the drum liner. I don't have experience in these things so could someone tell me if it's something to worry about? Is there anything I can do to prevent it from getting larger? JB Weld maybe?

CB500/550 / Top Gear Mystery

Hey everyone!

Bit of a puzzle for you; can you spot the difference?

New one on the left. The guy I bought it from assures me it was from a honda dealer. Could the lack of holes be a defect, and what if anything should I do about it?

CB500/550 / Gear shift fork damage?
« on: April 21, 2017, 03:03:16 PM »
Happy Friday everyone!

So I've slowly begun my reassembly when I noticed that the central gear shift fork has two ridges and other marks from what I think was some serious friction. She was really hard to shift past 2nd when I got her so might this be the cause?

Here's a picture:

As far as I can tell there is no damage on the rest of the transmission but I'll check again before reassembly.

So can I just grind off those ridges or do I have to replace it?

Much appreciated

CB500/550 / Main bearings
« on: March 14, 2017, 09:37:23 PM »
Hey,

Can anyone tell me if this misalignment between the oil hole and the main bearing in the top crankcase is normal. http://imgur.com/LxjL6BJ

Also should I be worried about these scuff marks on the top left of the bearings

Interchangeability / CB500 Front brake hose
« on: February 24, 2017, 06:32:42 AM »
Hi gents,

Looking to replace my front brake hoses. Does anyone know if the 750 brake hoses would fit on a 500.

Also would it be possible to replace rocker shafts which come as one per rocker for the later models 550 with one for two rockers, or should I lathe my own.

cheers

CB500/550 / Pitted journal and bearing
« on: December 30, 2016, 05:31:59 PM »
Merry holidays to all :)

I've been slowly getting ready to reassemble my engine, but the more you look the more you see. So I noticed this pit (possibly due to corrosion) on the #4 rod journal which snags on my nail.
http://imgur.com/VzE6OWN
Is the crank still usable since I know you can't grind them on a cb500? Should I polish it?

Second there is a pit on the big end bearing of #3 rod which doesn't snag but can be felt with a finger.
http://imgur.com/f7LaYoo
Does it need replacing? and if so do both half shells need to be replaced?

Thanks for your help
