CB500/550 / Chain rubbing against stand

Hi all,

I took my cb500 out for the first time, and i noticed a noise coming from the chain rubbing against the stand. It comes very far up and I can't see what is supposed to stop it from doing so. Any ideas?

Cheers

I would leave them as is however I had to take them off anyway so I'm guessing bending them back wouldn't be ideal.

Could I get away with serated flanged nuts then like the later hondas? Or would toothed lock washers be better

Cheers

Sorry I should have been more specific

Hi everyone,

Does anyone know what I could replace the stock lock washers on the rear wheel with? Maybe I'm being picky but they look like they need a change.

Cheers

First thing to do is to check that youre getting fuel to the right side carbs by undoing the drainage screw on the bowl, given that they're fed from the same hose. If they're dry then check the petcock on the fuel tank for blockages.

If all is clear then its most probably your idle jets getting clogged. That seems unlikely however if the left hand side ones are working.

Pulling the carbs is easy enough and taking the bowls off to inspect the jets. If they are blocked then boil them in vinegar water and clean them with wd40 while hot. You could also try to use some wire but this is likely to scratch the inside and screw up the jet.

Alternatively you could get a new set for under £20. While theyre open take the air screw out and squirt some solvent in the hole and see if it comes out the idle jet hole.

As I said you may not have to do all this but it's not that much hassle in the end.

Cheers for the answer. I like it because it's the cheapest option :)

Makes you wonder why though they opted for 8.8 on most of the bolts in shear.

Hi all,

Could anyone please tell me what the markings are on the bolts that hold up the caliper pivot arm to the stachion, I lost mine and i dont know what strength they need to be. #20 and #21 in the link.

https://www.cmsnl.com/honda-cb500k1-four-general-export_model14659/partslist/F06.html#results

I can see that in the cmsnl picture they have what looks like a 10 is that a 10.9 or 8.8 grade bolt.

Thanks for your help

Thanks kent, I guess I'll leave it alone.

Regarding the routing, I don't remember how it was when I disassembled it. Does the rev cable go beneath the bottom fork bridge or above it?

Cheers

thanks delta but I have the gauges apart and can spin the needle with my hand so no effect from cable, and the speedo is slower to reset than the rev-counter. Should they reset with the same speed?

Hi everyone,

I have my gauges apart for refurbishing, and I refilled the pot on the speedometer with 50,000 cst sillicone oil. While it is better than it was, it's still not as damped as the speedometer which I haven't touched. Does anyone know if this is normal or have I gone wrong somewhere?

Thanks

I put a flame next to each inlet and they all seem to have some blow back.

So I took the head cover off and refit the cam sprocket just to make sure it was timed correctly. While the rockers were off I covered the top of the valve with wd40 and compressed the cylinder, and no bubbles were visible so given the excellent condition of the valves (plus lapped and leak test) when the engine was stripped I assume it's ok. Readjusted the tensioner, because the manual said that a loose one can change timing, and reassembled. She sounds better now with four distinct sucks and from what I can tell no audible blows, so hopefully that's shook the bugs loose. Might have been sticky valves or tight clearances, I don't know.

I'll put my carbs back on and try to sync again. By the way is she supposed to eat a lot, she went through liter quite fast at idle.

Thanks for all your advice

Also is it normal to have some air blowing back out the intake?

Sorry I had it as private initially. I changed it to public, so should be fine now. Good to know that it is common to other engines (this is my first one :), but please have another look.

Thanks
