Other Bikes / Airbox and intake

Looking at this arrangement that you don't usually see opened like this.  Lorenzo crashed his Ducati moto gp bike and made a real mess of it this morning which allowed a view into something that's generally covered.

It uses an airbox,  the top of which is to rhs of picture. Intake bell mouth which are retracted and extended to affect engine combustion, they raise and lower on that frame which also has the fuel injectors travelling with them.
Interesting that with all the ecu control available and virtually unlimited R+D resources, it still has to use something that is fundamentally the same as our old road bikes to make the inlet system flow properly.
If they need this stuff to run properly,  then how difficult does that make it look to strip off the original Honda kit from these SOHC and have a realistic shot at getting them to run without glitches.

Found this which amused me, bit far to go in getting rid of those pesky PD carbs though.

I like the ad hoc diesel badge as well. What style ;D

Misc / Open / bike collection

Stopped by to see this collection a friend told me about,  driven past this place almost weekly but unaware of it's existence.

Some really nice bikes and all kept ready to go plus used regularly,  most will be on sale at Stafford this year. If you click on any of the images it'll take you through to the bike's story (slightly slow but it gets there)  which is worth a look at the ones that interest you.

Misc / Open / photobucket wierdness
« on: January 27, 2018, 03:44:35 PM »
Just noticed that the photobucket pictures that have been blanked on forum like this, after requiring payment for the service, still appear in images searches on Google. So if anyone has no original access to photos they may want then it's just possible you can find a copy.

This one was on here some years ago but still stored by then Goo men I presume.

Misc / Open / Request for help with German technical translation.
« on: January 16, 2018, 04:49:20 PM »
I wonder if our German speaking forum contributors could help with a translation for me as I'm looking at the following for my son.

https://www.ebay.de/itm/Carson-Force-25R-4-01-cm-Nitro-Motorblock-SG-Welle-Neuware/311892906349?_trkparms=aid%3D222007%26algo%3DSIM.MBE%26ao%3D2%26asc%3D49133%26meid%3D5f49b88775f8424bb864ce45be638434%26pid%3D100005%26rk%3D2%26rkt%3D6%26sd%3D401473274175&_trksid=p2047675.c100005.m1851

The motor is correct for our installation,  but it says "motorblock komplete" which is ok. But they are built up with the piston + bore / sleeve + conrod as a serviceable exchangeable component,  does this motor include those parts in the complete assembly?

The section of text that begins with "Lieferumfang" is the area I'm struggling with,  and does it say it includes the internal components as part of the whole motor?

Thankyou in anticipation.

Nigel.

CB350/400 / 400 Four detonation
« on: December 05, 2017, 09:05:04 AM »
Alright,  I know I " go on about it" but been looking at why I feel detonation can easily occur on this engine given the right / wrong conditions.

As others pointed out you normally associate lean mixture with something like this,  which is not obviously the case if jetted properly,  you'd have thought?
A characteristic of slide carbs is that you can create it with how you ride,  even if setup is correct.

Above should be a dyno trace that Jensen has kindly shared of his 400 Four running in 4th gear with throttle rolled open in that one gear to build the power curve you see in top traces.

The really interesting bit is the lower trace,  left scale is mixture with rpm along the bottom. It's obvious from that peak leading up to 4000rpm that it's running toward an over lean condition. Complete burn is considered to be 14.7 parts air to 1 part fuel. Most engines won't get that close. During acceleration you'd expect closer to 12 to 1 to make it move,  with cruising state in between the two.
It's not a wrong setting on here,  just characteristic of running from low rpm to high in one gear which is needed for the dyno plot.

What it does is the vacuum the engine draws at low rpm with throttle wide open cannot match the flow the carb venturi is making,  resulting in loss of vac on the main jet,  and so less fuel than ideal is pulled from float chambers ( it's this bit that PD carbs fill in with accelerator pump,  clever a?)  you can't jet your way out of it as the carb and main jet is almost fully open. It's really a failure of slide carbs used in this way and what would be termed "lugging " the motor in high gear.

In addition,  the ignition advance reaches max around 3000rpm and quite early for full load application ( more suited to cruising on light throttle to give good economy)  so in that lean peak area you've also got probably too much advance for a short period.

Put those conditions together,  perhaps riding along into a headwind,  fith or sixth gear,  trying to keep up speed at lowered rpm and you've got classic detonation. Riders with experience would recognise it's not pulling properly,  but if the circumstances are held like that without the engine accelerating through that, it will most likely detonate. It'll only take a few minutes like that to start the destruction of the pistons and rings.

You can't jet it differently,  it's just how you ride it. They need to be revved if you want them to go.
You've either got to back down the throttle or drop gears and spin it to higher revs.

The Black Bomber Board / The Dutch 450
« on: November 24, 2017, 06:49:24 PM »
The case history posted about this bike and linked in forum by Ash is certainly interesting from looking at the number of people now owning these engines.

http://www.hondatwins.net/forums/55-engine-discussion/33075-full-synthetic-oil-fresh-build-cb450-k0-engine-mile-0-a.html

The abovementioned link came up in discussion about ZDDP in oil. I don't know how many have read it being an interesting and different view of running one of these engines, along with attempts to mitigate some of it's perceived shortcomings.

I've been going through it a second time and intend to post on this thread my view of that study.

Worth talking about initially is some of the interaction which appears to lead to some conflict / confusion as to how contributors interact.
Initial posting by Jensen offers a question about if anyone is reading the thread and inviting comments as it travels along.
When one contributor "Mydlyfcrysys" contributes,  it ultimately leads to that conflict. I thought he had a very valid view of viscosity in particular and found his posts well informed and relevant.
It's a shame that this resulted in his inclination to cease giving input,  also that the originator ultimately appears to accept that there was some things to consider from Mydlyfcrysys.
I can see that the originator sets out to complete his test based on a series of modifications, and wishes to see that through to quantify what affects that has on the various engine components. But some of the initial comments from him seem to wrong foot the other forum members.

It does weave a broad set of test conditions as there are a few changes from specification, making it slightly complex to unpick in order to analyse.

I'll follow with posts in splitting it up as I interpret it.

Other Bikes / Help with part numbers
« on: July 07, 2016, 03:46:55 PM »
I hope that I may get some help with part numbers for Honda bikes I don't know,  for example handlebar switch # 35150-187-601 which is a rhs assembly with switch,  throttle and cable brake lever bracket built in.

Can anyone identify the bike from this?

And also is there a resource that I can look up various numbers from, mostly from 70's and 80's I'm guessing.

Thanks it advance for anyone's help.

Misc / Open / Famous SOHCs
« on: November 17, 2014, 07:15:25 PM »
Was looking through some utube clips t'other day and found one of sid vicious doing "c'mon everybody" an eddie cochran track, he is though on a SOHC. One shot looks like a twin (250/350) but one looks like he starts on maybe a 500/4 but you only get to see half of it so can't be sure.
Anyone else seen it?

Looks like there could be something of ineterest here on Sunday 27th July and also a bike autojumble.

I don't know what it's like as I've always missed the dates before but may get over there tomorrow to have a look, it's near Gatwick airport so not too far for some of those on here.

Tricks & Tips / Carb cleaning (economic method)
« on: June 16, 2014, 10:32:13 PM »
I had a small carb (not sohc) that is essentially a pilot jet system with no needle valve, just air passages to meter the fuel.

Been left atanding about ten years and I could not get through the small airways with anything physical and the jet holes are really small stopping it from running at all.

Wondering what to do with it, so bit of lateral thinking (deck-chair, sunny garden, cold beer) and came up with boiling it.

So 50p on a old saucpan at the local car boot, gentle simmer in plain water for 15mins.......and clean as a whistle, reassmbled, primed and motor fired second try.

Used to run a chemical analytical lab and remembered that they always used to steam all the kit to clean it of any residue, also they use steam in other industries like petro-chemical....so that's my thinking logic and it does seem to be effective for naff all cost.

Suppose you could also use one of those walpaper steam/stripper kits with a nozzle to clean out oilways, carbs etc.

Let us know if you try it with any success.
Nigel.
