CB500/550 / Drilled disc?
« on: July 18, 2020, 06:00:48 PM »
I’ve just swapped out my drilled disc, wasn’t really that hot on it, but mainly I thought it was clanging the pads. Turns out it’s the brand new caliper! Was about 2mm longer than the OEM one and it was hitting the rivets on the disc!!
I road the bike with it on, it was not warped and is about 7mm+ thick, can’t measure just yet as my caliper have a flat battery. The clanking was only noticed when I span the wheel after fitting the new caliper. I’ve ground off the excess and now it’s A1.
Are these drilled discs any good? Should I keep as a spare if/when the used solid one wears down?
Could have saved myself a few quid but honestly I checked everything before I bought another disc...

CB500/550 / Brake master - wrong one?
« on: July 11, 2020, 01:18:54 PM »
Have I got the wrong master cylinder? Try as a might I cannot get it bled onto the new caliper. Still pulls back onto the grip when squeezed hard. According to the replacement I’ve found at Legend MCs the 4 master is scalloped to fit over the bar. I had to use the straight hose end to get the pipe clearance and I can’t fit the bars at the dot to set them straight, had to tilt them back. Also my clocks may have been moved to fit the ign switch which I’ve now moved..

Misc / Open / Indicator stem threads

Can anyone tell me what thread OEM stems have? I’ve been through all my boxes and can’t find any that fit!

Anorak's Corner / Tank lining - how effective?
« on: June 24, 2020, 10:41:27 PM »
After a rudimentary (epoxy) quick refurb on a tank I obtained, with Rostio two pack treatment, it’s all started leaking. As with most old tanks I think it’s probably too thin to mig the holes.
Would a quality liner be a good move? It’s already been de rusted and enamelled. Currently drying out in the garage.

Interchangeability / Rear wheel compatibility 500

What wider wheels (spoked) fit a K1 500? Thinking of a little cafe racer mod. Tweaking my bike whilst retaining all the OEM parts and making no permanent alterations.

CB500/550 / UK 500 fixer upper
« on: June 15, 2020, 07:06:29 PM »
After starting to go off topic on other threads I thought I’d best start a proper build one..

As bought;

Dunstall exhaust, carbs properly cleaned from this state

Sourced a tank...

Gave it a once over for now with Rostio and cellulose Porsche Conda Green

After rebuilding the carbs, cleaning the entire fuel system, replacing a bodge points plate with a good used one, still wouldn’t run or even start. Pulled the plugs and put the used ones that were in the tool tray back in and off she went! No4 cyl still not playing ball but I can hear a stray spark under the tank, so checking the HT leads as soon as I can cobble up a temporary tank - I’ve drained the 750 tank and I’m waiting for the Rostio enamel to dry..
It has been buggered about with in the recent past, cheap Chinese points self tapped into the plate, crimps on the LT leads, possibly wrong coil, definitely wrong plugs! Loads of iffy wiring to be sorted. Just trying to get it running reliably, enjoy a few rides over the summer then plan the works over the winter.

New Member Introductions / New member UK 500
« on: May 24, 2020, 09:32:49 PM »
Hi everyone
I’ve recently acquired an original UK 500/4, 38000 miles, original colour (sadly not all original paint). It’s got plenty of patina but it’s very original and running fairly well so I’m tempted to enjoy it as is.
The seller told me it needed a carb clean, which I’ve now done borrowing an ultrasonic bath, but still running badly. Secondhand contact breaker plate acquired with old OEM points fitted but after timing up it runs a lot better than it did on the new cheap points - which were held in with self tappers so had been bodged! Has one new coil and plug leads numbered 4-1 instead of 1-4 so it’s clearly been fiddled with greatly recently. Fuel supply seems ok and the tank is reasonably clean, temporarily ran inline fuel filters and nothing showed up.
Fork oil looks like cold coffee so that needs doing, caliper needs looking at. Starter jammed in yesterday but freed itself off while I had a cuppa. Bench synced until I can afford a proper kit. Stock air box etc, I’ve removed the Motad 4-1 as I got lucky with a genuine period Dunstall 4-2 set up, a 4-4 is out of reach and I’m trying to buy used period parts rather than new copies.
The bike turns heads and I love it! Lucky also to have a ‘96 Triumph Sprint as a daily so the Honda is for fun.
