CB750 / Fork seals orientation
« on: September 22, 2020, 05:05:07 PM »
I am about to replace the seals on my 750K2.

I always believed that a seal was inserted so that the size could be read from the outside - which seems not unreasonable.

However a while back, I was watching a Hackaweek video on this and he said the fork seal should be inserted with the ridge (see pic) facing up, which, on my seals (from DSS), would mean the size etc would be on the inside, ie invisible.

Now maybe he has different seals, but the ridge looks the same; can anyone clarify this for me?

CB350/400 / Petrol Cap Lock
« on: September 07, 2020, 09:59:33 AM »
Has anyone ever taken the Petrol cap lock apart?

I want to take the wee plastic bit out so I can get it powder coated - the chrome part, not the plastic part  ;)

CB350/400 / Can I use this Gasket?
« on: September 04, 2020, 10:15:02 AM »
I just opened my Verseh gasket set from DSS, to discover the head gasket was rusted.

The rust, especially on the lower rings can be felt with my finger and scraping it with my fingernail doesn’t remove it, so it’s quite deep.

Can I use it as is? Should I clean the rust using scotchbrite, or similar? Or ask for a replacement?

CB350/400 / Tail light deconstruction
« on: September 03, 2020, 09:41:46 AM »
I’m trying to tart up my rear light fitting, but am stuck trying to get the earth connection bit off. It seems to be stuck to the rubber underneath.

Any advice on how to get this off?

The bulb holder in the second pic seems to be welded/braised to the reflector around part of the circumference.

Tricks & Tips / Front wheel axle spacer
« on: August 29, 2020, 10:42:01 AM »
The three prongs on either side of my axle spacer are mangled. I have attempted to straighten them, but they are really beyond redemption. Still I fitted them, trying to make sure, as far as possible, that the prongs sat on the pouter bearing race and the main part on the inner race.

Now when I tighten the axle nut to anything much more than hand tight, the bearings start to bind. When the nut is tight, the wheel barely spins. Everything else seems OK, so I’m assuming this has something to do with the spacer.

Question: Can I remove the prongs – they are loose anyway – and just use the centre part of the spacer, so it’s like the rear wheel spacer?

CB350/400 / Primary Drive Chain Guide
« on: August 04, 2020, 04:28:10 PM »
Just starting to put my engine back together.

Can someone advise which way the primary drive chain guide fits in the lower case?

Outside the two bolts, one end is longer than the other and it has a small hole/depression in it.

Does this go at the bottom, by the oil pan, or the other way round?

I know this one looks fine, but I need to take it off and I also know that this can be challenging.

I’ve checked on EBay with no luck.

CB350/400 / Engine Paint Options
« on: June 19, 2020, 10:58:09 AM »
I’ve decided to paint my engine, since everything else is being powder-coated.

I’ve searched for paint recommendations and the one that seems to be favoured is Simoniz VHT Silver and the Mfr Code for this is SIMVHT31C. However I cannot find it.

I have found:
https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/4-x-SIMONIZ-SILVER-VHT-PAINT-Brake-Drums-Calipers-exhaust-manifolds-500ML-VHT22D/264227677240?hash=item3d85326438:g:wUEAAOSwJrdcgDF1 - SIMVHT22D up to 800ºC

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/4x-500ml-Simoniz-Vht-Very-High-Temperature-Silver-Spray-Paint/401496585540?hash=item5d7b0fb544:g:5mYAAMXQJ3xRfSBw - SIMVHT22C up to 1200ºC

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/SIMONIZ-ALUMINIUM-ENGINE-ENAMEL-TOUGH-PROTECTION-PAINT-SPRAY-500ml/391967859719?epid=1623380237&hash=item5b431ae407:g:R5wAAOSwwZtaaF1p - SIMVHT31D up to 800ºC

Can anyone tell me which, if any, one of these is the same or closest match; or point me to the 31C version.

Thanks

CB350/400 / CB400F Ressurection - Cam Chain Adjuster Housing Damaged
« on: April 28, 2020, 11:19:16 AM »
I acquired this 1978 400 Four two years ago – it had been sitting on a shelf for 16, now 18 years – and now that I’ve finished riding for a while, I’ve started working on getting it back on the road.
[ Guests cannot view attachments ]

I’ve posted this on the US site also, but putting it here too in the hope that someone Not active there might have some thoughts. Hope that’s allowed.

It’s rougher than I at first thought and I now pondering whether to just get it going and ride or to spend more time and money on a more thorough job. I’m inclined, at present towards the riding option.

One thing I discovered today is damage to the cam chain adjuster housing on the crankcase. The adjuster bolt is missing and the hole has been plugged with something. What are my options here?

Is there a way to repair it properly? Would this involve a complete engine dismantle? Can I leave it as is? Or do I need new cases?
Thanks for your thoughts.

CB750 / 750 K2 Rebuild
« on: February 02, 2009, 11:06:00 PM »
Hi All,

Having restarted my stalled rebuild, I encountered some diffs :(. Help appreciated!

The bearing retainers on both front and rear (wheel and sprocket flange) wheels are siezed solid - even my attempts at destructive removal failed. Rather foolishly I sent the wheels to be rebuilt and rechromed with the bearings intact, hoping I think that the guy would remove them before doing the work - he didn't and I am now reluctant to apply too much heat to my shiny new chrome. Would the rechroming process have helped in the seizure? How can I get these off?

Problem number 2 relates to the fork legs. These were so badly rusted and pitted at the top as to be unsalvageable. I got a set of forks from a 750F super sport. Now these area bit longer than the originals. Can I use these safely?

Thanks for your thoughts

Sean

CB750 / Original Paint Colours
« on: December 06, 2005, 09:15:48 AM »
I am restoring a 1974 K2. It is blue and I am trying to identify the correct paint colour, and a source of same.

I think it might be \"Planet Blue Metallic\".

Anyone got a part number and a source?

Thanks
