I understand the tax as I have already done the 400/4 last year.
It was the MOT thing I was reading where it stated that you did not have to apply for the MOT exemption it automatically qualified after the 40th year .
I agree with Paul on this- the MOT man said its probably the last MOT ill ned, but im not so sure..My bike is registered September '78
I went to PO, they were unsure, so wrote 'HISTORIC' tore of the bit, got me to sign the V5 and then couldnt input the request to change!! They told me to tax it for 6 months and come bacl, which will be in the 41st year and after April 1st. Fortunately its a rural PO and they are friendly- lord help anyone in a City where there are queues...(I was the only one in the Post-Office at the time)
We will see!
'cos it not 'historic' until 1st april 2019 (like mine) - i can't say i followed the dvla explanation but i think it's something to do with the 'old' system of applicable dates that were used way back with the paper based system (rather like they can't/won't issue a tax by the day which with an electronic system would be easy to do but they rather stick with the old 'first of the month' system)

my date of first reg is 13/09/1978 but the tax in only 'free' after 01/04/2019 as julie has already points out (i checked this with dvla).
if in any doubt just give them as call give them the reg no and they will check what date applies.

a rubber door stop maybe?
i have a motad silencer with a bracket from something else so the stand was hitting the bracket and i fitted a door stop. it may not look great but it works!

hi, thanks. i tried ringing swinton but it seems that for whatever reason no quotes were available. anyway bikesure came throu at £68.95 with a few requirements - like not insured as soon as you take it out of the garage  - until you are going for a ride but at least its insured.

now its (almost) just a matter of getting it insured and trying it out - hopefully the riding position won't give me cramp (i'm more used to cruisers)
on insurance, i have found a reasonable one for £85 (fully comp, limited miles, 10years ncb, low excess) via gocompare but people like say swinton don't insure over 30years old and p james want about £140 - my existing insurance (bennetts) have some stupid requirement that says if you are within 500yards of your home and say bike is garaged (like most are) but wheel it out onto the drive so get your gear on/clean it then it is only partially insured and you have to pay part of the cost if it is nicked!
any suggested companies with a good price??

pics make it look a bit better than it is - you cannot see the staining on the chrome - but i'm not into making a bike look like its just off the production line just an honest 40 year old reasonably looked after.

at last carbs seem to be 'ok' so primary and cam chains make less noise than they used to, cleaned most of the elec. terminals, new cables and i'm almost there.
still need to change the cut down front mudguard and front brake line but they can wait. i will put a couple of pics up in the near future. bring on the sun!

just to wind the "running too rich" bit up - the replacement carb kits arrived (only 25ish the four) and i fitted all the brass other then the needles and it now runs just fine. i am going to guess i did in fact open out the pilot jets (all were blocked) a bit too much when i cleaned them out.
and
although i don't think i have sync'ed them quite right they are all near 250 mmhg (10inhg) at 3k rpm so i will ride it a bit and redo it later this year if i think it needs it.
almost there now!!

from what i can see it is 'ok' to use lead free petrol in a 1978 cb400f but does anyone use an additive? or premium rather than the base petrol?

quick question.
there are very small 'cut aways' on the lower lip of each on the throttle slides (pic of two below). they look like a previous owner has put a drill or something under the slide to get the initial gap but either ramed it in or banged the slide up and down causing a small chip in the slide skirt - anything i need to worry about/replace the slides as the damage is very small?
