CB500/550 / Swinging arm bushes
« on: May 01, 2024, 10:10:31 AM »
Another newbie question. I am getting close to the point where I can send the frame to the paintshop for stripping/enamelling. I have taken off the swinging arm, removed the pivot bolt & the end caps. I assume that where the manual (Im mainly using Haynes) describes 'bushes' it is referring to the inner (steel?) sleeve. Having only worked on old Brit bikes previously, to me a swinging arm bush is a short brass or phosphor bronze insert. Subject to the bush sleeve being within tolerance I am planning to leave it in the swinging arm whilst it is repainted; masking the ends and the grease nipple. Is this approach OK and is my understanding of what needs to be checked for tolerance correct? Thanks

CB500/550 / Rocker Housing - Stuck??
« on: April 26, 2024, 06:13:32 PM »
Following the successful (final) removal of the seized oil filter bolt and the seized engine hanger I have got the engine out and on the workbench. Sump, breather cover, cam end covers removed. Rocker cover/assembly screws and bolts all removed thanks to the impact driver and JIS bits recommended by this forum. However, the rocker cover/assembly wont lift off. I have given it a few taps with the soft mallet and checked for hidden bolts but I cant see anything I have missed. There is a clear gap at the front of the engine between the cover and the head but at the back (intake side) there is no gap at all. It looks as if there are a couple of locating dowels on the back edge which if steel may have corroded and stuck fast. Is there a bolt/screw I may have missed and what are the thoughts about the locating dowels sticking; does this happen and if so is there a remedy? I have attached an aerial view in case there is something obvious to the experts. Many thanks. Mike

CB500/550 / CB550 Oil Filter Bolt Removal
« on: April 23, 2024, 08:18:51 AM »
Im planning to lift the 550 engine out of the frame at the weekend and intended to take off the Oil Filter housing to make removal from the frame easier. The bolt on the oil filter housing looks horrendous, no flats left and I doubt a smaller socket tapped onto it would grip. I can probably get my large Molegrips on it but before I go down that route are there any tips for tackling this? I have given it a good squirt of WD and left it to soak in. Thanks

CB500/550 / Where to Start?
« on: April 17, 2024, 08:39:48 PM »
Hi, much excitement as my registration document has arrived today for my '76 CB550 import. DVLA turned this around in 2 weeks and one day - Im pleasantly surprised!
Knowing that it wont need a physical inspection I can now strip it down and start the rebuild. A very 'Newbie' question: is there are generally accepted order to strip down the bike? I guess I want to remove as much as I can before the wheels but welcome any advice. If there are any docs in the archive please can someone point me in the right direction? I have checked Aladdin's Cave and didnt see anything there. Thanks, Mike

CB500/550 / 550 front brake rebuild
« on: April 14, 2024, 08:44:46 PM »
On my long to do list is a rebuild of the grotty front brake system. I’m thinking that fitting a new master cylinder makes sense rather than a rebuild of the master cylinder. As for the rest of the system, is there a how to guide available anywhere I could follow? Also, are there any common mistakes I should be aware of? I have never done work on hydraulic brakes before. Thanks

New Member Introductions / Just joined
« on: April 11, 2024, 06:16:38 PM »
Hi, I have recently acquired an imported US 1976 CB550 and have joined the forum for the help and advice I know Im going to need to get it back on the road. Thanks in advance and to those on the forum who have already helped me out. In the past I have had old British twins so the overhead cam, hydraulics and more than 2 carbs is a big step for me.

As of posting I am waiting for DVLA to issue me with a reg for the bike so I can start to strip it down completely. Currently I ride a modern Triumph twin but I have a soft spot for the old vintage Honda 4 cylinder bikes; something that was out of my reach when I was a youngster.

CB500/550 / CB550 Cylinder 1&2 not firing
« on: April 11, 2024, 06:05:26 PM »
Hi, thanks for all the help re Carb rebuild for my CB550. I was dead chuffed when i put the rebuilt carbs on the bike and it ran. However, I have quickly realised that the pipes for cylinders 1&2 are cold & therefore not running on these cylinders. My logic is that as 3&4 are running its not condensers, not coils, not plugs (there is a spark on 1&2) and not fuel to the carbs as the float bowls are filling. What im guessing is that there was some contamination in the fuel line to the carbs for 1&2 that has blocked the jets. Tomorrow im planning to remove the carbs, clean them, blow out the jets, check float valves, float needles etc and try again. Is there anything obvious that anyone can think Im missing? As I sit on the bike I am numbering the carbs from left to right from the gearlever side. Cheers, Mike

CB500/550 / Carb Cleaning Tips?
« on: March 26, 2024, 09:28:20 AM »
Hi, I have recently bought a 1976 US import CB550 and 'those that know' have recommended I join this forum; greetings!
My first task on the bike is to strip and rebuild the cruddy, varnish-rich carbs. I have access to an ultrasonic cleaner but Im wondering if that will be sufficient to clean the float needles, jets, emulsion tube etc or will I have to soak the tiny bits in some spray carb cleaner as well? Any advice very welcome. I want to keep the original Keihin brass components if I can, I dont want to replace them unless I have to. Thanks.
