I believe that originally they had a thin silver base coat applied followed by lacquer but as we know to our cost, this finish was less than durable in our climate.  The same finish was applied to lots of stuff on our bikes and if we used them in all weathers it did not last very long.  My own preference is to strip this finish and hand polish the part.  The purists might complain but even after 15 years my covers and other parts only need a quick rub with solvol to bring them back to as they were when I did them.  So yes, they do respond to polishing but again, speaking personally, I don’t machine polish.

This is a quick shot of the 400/4 and my avatar is the 350/4 I’ve had since about 2002.

[quote author=Nurse Julie I do like an oily rag to wipe over the frame / black bits etc, it doesn't really achieve anything on powder coated frames but it was a regular thing on my old Brit bikes, so I still do it.

Obviously a good supply of external oil there to call upon,! :P

Perhaps all other riders should refuse to ride on the same track as him, if the authorities don't do the right thing. His team should sack him whatever, if the haven't yet.

Love the classic. Been to that and the main TT. Both great but classic best in my mind. More relaxed and you can relate to the bikes much better.

I just live3 the way you explain thing Nigel. Even as a 'novice' with a little knowledge, I understand everything you have written there and as usual, I have learnt something new today (unfortunately at Dave's expense !!!).

The motorcycling equivalent of Brian Cox me thinks? Excellent read.
