The Black Bomber Board / Re: The Black Bomber thread

Oh dear, I may be spending more time down here in the future. Time to practice the man maths and justify to her indoors why it would be silly not to buy another motorbike, after all I will still only have three.

I bought this 1969 CL450, last night on eBay, I mainly went for this one because of the chromework, and it not being weather seized. I realise the mileage should be ignored, if it was real it could be the mileage when Bubba forgot and ran it without any oil in, we shall see when the motor comes apart.

The bars, rear heatshield and seat are wrong (possibly swapped with another CL, maybe the bodywork too), and some hard to find bits have been picked off like the front brake cable and horn. I've already found a NOS cable in matching grey, and maybe a horn. The seat I can get a good Texavina replica from Vietnam, has anyone dealt with these, they have good feedback?

The laquered alloy bits and exhaust, clocks guards, stays etc all look in very fine fettle. A few butchered JIS and some allen screws in the motor.

My mate is picking her up Thursday, then she will go in my mates garage while I get the motor apart to see what we have, and collect parts. At least I also have some Candy Ruby Red paint, bought for the CB750.

I could be sorry I asked, as you rip it to bits, but it is what it is, and I've always thought the DOHC motor interesting. What should be holding those side panels in place BTW?
Good potentail. Looked at that myself and thought good buy for someone. Glad its gone to a good home on here so we can watch progress. Not Jealous  :P

Missing capitals can also cause confusion,  as in;

I helped my uncle jack off his horse

My wife feels it would be wrong to send my children into school with that to show their English teacher... Can see why? :P

it didn't cop too much damage, the beauty of having trailbiked it. if it had been stock it would have trowelled the tank, guards and lights but plastic mx stuff is better adapted to being upside down
Spose you could now sell it on as a UK import!

Looks v nice.

My speedo is a 110 one, bought it from DSS ages ago.  if I put a 120 face on it, like yours, it's going to read wrongly or won't it make much difference?  What is the opinion of the speedo experts?
Who cares, just think how much faster it wil be! Oh the bragging rights down
the pub. :P

Did my little bit of tinkering stop it from smoking  ;) and is the bloody thing run in yet.
Graham, what timing.... My mower in France started smoking very badly suddenly, from the often expected bit on start up with these. Assumed serious and not worth looking at but any tips, blocked breathers etc. .... Tim

Nice find. Good luck should be fun. Got to go with general consensus on paint. Perhaps Green1 would do you a cheep roller emulsion job with him being in the trade!

Its looking good Aled.  Rapid progress is being made, you'll have it on the road next weekend at the rate you are going :o
I like the idea of having the bike bench on castors, simple and effective in a small garage.
Keep the photos coming.
Re engine stand, got me thinking too. Is this what you have?
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Heavy-Duty-Swivel-Transmission-Gearbox-Engine-Mount-Support-Stand-1000-lbs-450kg-/282582463347?epid=1039473391&hash=item41cb3a3373:g:eHIAAOSw-QZZzMbf

Was it easy to adapt to bike engine etc....?

I am getting an irrational urge to buy a CL450, there seem to be plenty in the States but like hen's  teeth everywhere else.

All the looks of the CL350, but with extra grunt!

/quote]

That's not irrational. "tis a thing of beauty". Not that the smaller variants aren't nice too but the engine architecture wins it for me on the 450.

I did just that Ash. Couldn't find anything Bomber though. But on another stall I did find (hiding in a box) a pair of brand new Bomber tank badges complete with screws. Didn't find anything else, was hoping for a front mudguard or a set of GS1000 header pipes (some chance).
Roy, did you see the Wes cooley GS1000 rep in the Suzuki tent? Lovely! So much so, the mate I was with who was starting a standard resto on one, is going along those lines now. Whilst on that do you know any good suppliers of GS stuff? Also any forums? He says he is strugling for bits and info....
Information on the whole GS range is best on the GS Resources forum, fairly friendly and they know the GS stuff well. Genuine Suzuki parts I mainly get direct from themselves on eBay. They run a scheme where certain models parts are being re-manufactured by Suzuki. The GS1000 is well catered for as one of the models included is the GS1000S which has the same engine as all the other early models. Then there's always CMS who have a huge stock, and Fowlers Parts are quite good as well. For other more specific things like the essential rebuilt clutch basket to remove the GS rattle I use a company called Grumpy1260 who fit the Falicon conversion. Cheers.
Thanks Roy passed info on.

;) well its nice to know that there is at least three k0's  still knocking around ,strange thing is i have only seen pics of two others and so far they are all red and i have yet to see a blue one?
on the subject of the show i did not go myself probably never will again ive done it to death i was talking to some mates today who went on saturday they said never again they waited a hour and half to get in and came away with nothing

It's 120 miles away from me Steff. I got there about 9:15am  and  had to wait in the queue for 20 mins but overall not too  bad. I always tell myself ...'not again' but continue to go ...it's a good place to meet up with kindred spirits you wouldn't normally  get to  see. you  could argue that there  isn't the NOS stuff there any more but it's pretty much dried up everywhere now for our bikes.
Went Sunday. Got there soon after 10 and 5 mins queuing, then in. Would imagine Saturday all early birds after best pickings. Layout always a bit samey but usually interesting.
