Title: 400 Ignition Barrel Problem
Post by: Deano400 on June 07, 2019, 11:13:16 AM
Hi All.
As you can see from the first pic, I can remove my ignition key when in the ON position. Bit of a pain as it works its way out whilst riding along. Now I start the bike and put the key in my pocket to keep it safe then have to fish around in my pocket for the key when I stop.
Has anyone managed to dismantle and repair one of these?
Or has anyone got a useless one they are willing to part with so I can have a practice run at fixing before I attempt mine. I'd like to keep mine as it is the same key for the seat.
Looks like it's three punches to the outer casing holding it together. I was thinking of drilling out the punches but not sure how I'd go about fixing it back together yet or once apart whether I can do anything to resolve the key issue.

I have!

That punch thing is just to catch a bigger dimple in the casting. You just pull the metal sleeve up.

Mine was exactly the same as yours, probably a bit worse even, as the flap thing has wedged open and someone had seemingly started the bike with a screwdriver at least once.

Took apart carefully, and straightened all the brass pins. Greased lightly and reassembled and it works great now. But then I did also get another key for it, as the one I had was very worn...

Chuck a load of penetrating oil on it overnight first, then use a flat screwdriver in the slot to the right of the dimple. Twist and it should come up. :)

I also feel like there could be a small screw to retain the cover.

Another bit of useful info is that there aren't that many different keys, some are still available. I bought one with the correct number from the US, on ebay. Searched my key number actually  :o

David Silver has a list of old keys available from him on his website. Didn't have mine unfortunately.
The guy at arun-locks.co.uk  is very helpful. I didn't have any keys for my bike, but he cut keys just from the lock for me. ☺

Most locksmiths have the blanks either in stock or available next day.

I don't think all the old  styles of blanks are available anymore. If you know of a long established locksmith they could have old stock.

I should have looked there first.

They sell the exact pre-cut key for less.
Still £9+ for a spare key that you’d hope never to need though.
