Title: Waterproof
Post by: mike the bike on August 15, 2019, 01:37:23 PM
I bought some waterproof bike trousers on ebay for £30 and found they ain't waterproof.   I find the el cheapo plastic ones keep the rain out better.
Is it me that's not doing something right, like spraying the crotch area with chain grease or have I bought some useless Chinese shite from fcuking Indians.
Just as well there's a few tumble dryers in work.

You get what you pay for Mike.

When I was a daily rider (ie before I retired ), I was a 2 hrs/day 5 days/week biker.

I had a £1000 Gore-Tex Pro suit from Halvarssons that was warm and dry for the 5 years that I used it.
That’s 2500 hours @ 40p/hr

It’s a lot of money, but beats showing up for work soaked and cold.

I must admit to a smug smile sometimes when the heavens opened and I just kept on going.

The only thing that defeated me was freezing fog. I wouldn’t venture out in it.

If I had a spare grand that I was itching to spend I'd buy one. I haven't and I didn't.
The eBay listing does say that they're waterproof and I naively expected them to be waterproof for more than 200 yards.

I used to work in oil refineries and we had one piece PVC suits for protection against chemicals they were great for biking 100% waterproof, I used these for long journeys like rallies.
Mind you from age 16 to 28 my bike was my only form of transport so the weather could not be allowed to stop me. The other gear that I had was a Belstaff and leggings (Trialsmaster?) they never let me down either.
Crikey just looked up the Belstaff gear on the internet wow, it was never that expensive in the olden days.

Cheers

Dennis

I  venture out in all weathers and find cheep plastic ones are the most reliable or mid spec RST and make sure you zip the tops to the bottoms. Your crouch is always the week spot  a heavy dose of WD40 helps
I have more trouble finding gloves that keep you dry.

The biggist mistake you can make with textiles is wash them as there never the same again even if treated.

I only work 6 miles away so cheap Screwfix ones will do me.

Do like Mick in previous post,  just spray your crotch with WD 40 and don't bother with the waterproofs  ;D

Never heard of WD40 used like that before.

I have tried all sorts of sprays and there all as crap as the next. WD40 dooes work but make sure you work it in.  ;D
Don't try it with plastic trousers
Last week I used a dustbin linner for my 56 mile ride home as I only had my summer jacket

You beat me to it I was going to say it makes stain removal easier

I second the use of WD for the crotch area, I have never suffered with rusty, tight nuts following a heavy application of the product.
My cab is waiting outside........... ::)

Update.
The seller told me to piss off.
I took up the dispute with PayPal.
The seller told PayPal to piss off.
Paypal found in my favour and refunded me £29.99
And I don't have to bugger about with returning them.

Lidls all in 1 waterproofs were great, not seen them in a while though. They kept me dry whatever back when bike was my only transport. In summer I used just my normal leathers but treated with renapur leather balm. That was ok for about 1/2 hour in a shower but needed re applying every couple of months or the stitching let  in the wet. Boots were harder to get in true waterproof form, again, I think the Lidl ones were s good as the £120 sets I got in good second hand. Nothing lasted me past 5 years appart from the leathers - but I was a bit lazy cleaning salt off etc in winter.

I remember when Belstaff was a wax cotton uniform for every second dispatch rider in the 1980s. After returning to biking 28 years later I thought I'd get myself some Belstuff again and popped into the Belstaff shop in Spitalfields market , east London. Suddenly I'm looking at jackets that has £800.oo price tags....I sort of slinked back out with my tail between my legs!

Belstaff are no longer a motorcycle product.
But are a Italian owned. Chinese made fashion item for the pretentious to wear whilst poncing about at the Goodwood revival.
