Title: Is a 400/four too small for a 6ft 1in bloke?
Post by: McCabe-Thiele (Ted) on March 07, 2021, 05:11:52 PM
Seen somewhere on here about my 400 / four not being suitable for tall folk is this true? PS my height is in my legs rather than my torso. Discuss please?

I have a 350F as in the avatar (same size bike as a 400F) and am 6 foot. Last time I passed a shop window reflection I was reminded of a full grown adult riding a BMX bike so I don't use it anymore. Yes they are too small.

Now you have it in bits Ted you can redesign a taller seat!

Don't worry about it Ted, you'll be fine. I'm sure you're not planning to ride from Lands End to John o'Groats on her 😁😁😁

I'm 6' and I've got a 400four.  I would suggest riding one to see if you like it.

That's true I'm unlikely to ride more than 60 miles on a given day. I

I used to find mine gave me cramp in my thighs after about 20 minutes riding, and u was still a teenager then. I'm bang on 6 foot. It was so bad I used to pinch a cushion off the sofa and out that on the seat to make it marginally better. Seeing a sign in my local Honda dealer referring to them as "Superbikes for women and wimps" settled it, a 750K2 was exchanged for it (F1's were still too new and expensive then!)

Thanks for the tip I'll avoid shop windows etc.

A bit too late for that as I am already rebuilding one,  tbh the reason I went for the 400/four was all about the weight & dinkyness as my XJ900 had become difficult to pull onto the centre stand and for low speed manoevers on my property as I aged.

I wanted a project where spares were available it's only now that I have thought about it being too small for me to to ride comfortably.

When I was a teenager my 250 Dream fitted me okay - I commuted at weekends between Chester & Derby just fine. As Julie says for the likely distance I will cover its fine. (gulp)

TBH the 400 is too small for a woman  ;D ;D ;D

I await being banned from site

They were probably designed originally for the home market before good nutrition became the norm.

When inthe trade we always reckoned the 400 was the ladies sohc, but then we had a man with a z900 that had to always ride with a pillion because he couldn't touch the floor

At 5' 5" it's always annoyed me that a 400/4 is considered a womans bike. Shame on you. It's a riders bike that appreciates a very singular build, whether male or female...

On the flip side of the coin, at 5' 7" i struggle  with the hight of my CB750, but back in the day in 1974 i had a new K2 and i don't remember having any issues with the hight of that, so i must have shrunk quite a bit :'(

And some more delicate parts of the anatomy. Or so I'm told. Ahem.

I'm only 5' 5" and 130lbs and our 400/4 fits me perfectly. My 94' Kawasaki Concours weighs 700lbs and I tour on it but you guys don't really need a bike you can do 800 miles in a day.. I have to wear my logging boots with heels to flatfoot on it. The best part about being this small is all bikes are faster when I ride them.  8)

I'm 6' and 14 stones and owned a 350/4 for some years, until 2004. I once rode it to Cornwall (from Norfolk) and then on to Wales, before returning home.

The bike was faultless in every respect (it was bought from a private collector in the U.S. and came to me with only 2,800 miles on the clock, at 26 years old).

Although I would often choose to ride it over other bikes, I did eventually sell it for the very reason given - that when I sat on it, the bike disappeared from view. I usually sat on the pillion seat and, whilst I am uninterested in fashion in any way (ask my wife or daughter!) I began to realise that I resembled the "oversized man on a donkey" seen on comic holiday cards of years ago. This was too much, even for me!

Now, I restrict myself to 750cc or more amongst the older bikes (although a CB500/4 is just about sensible).

My CL450 is the smallest bike I’ve had for years. It’s also become my daily runabout.

James H said that riding his was like a clown on a bicycle but hilarious, I agree. It seems to fit me well enough, and I love wiggling through the Manchester traffic on it, but my wife won’t go on the pillion, she says there’s no room for her once my fat ass has taken up all the room.

I'm 5ft 9in but a typical Welsh scrum-half with short legs and low centre of gravity (big belly!)

The 400f fits me fine, feels good to ride so I don't worry about what I look like to other people. I've got better things to worry about. 🏍🔩🔧😁

Personally, I find the 400/4 just right for riding as far as size is concerned, I also find the 500/550 just right and the 750/4 just right also for riding. I also find the CD250u just right 😁😁😁
At 5'5" you just have to get on with it. To be honest, I can only just tip toe on a standard 750/4 and the older I get, the heavier the 750/4 is getting to push around 😊😊😊😊

What is the official inside leg measurement for a Honda Monkey bike  ??? And if you are 6 ft 9in with a inside leg of 37" a, Honda African twin is perfect  :o

I once followed a very short person on a Suzuki RE5 rotary, which is a big beast of a thing.

Pulling up at a set of lights, on a slippery road, he put his foot down and did the splits! The bike went over and we jumped off to help him and the bike up, trying not to giggle too much...

The BMX or the 350 ;D

I am around 5'5" and just around 11stone with short legs, i wish i had kept my 350f and sold my Zed thou, the 350 was a lovely little bike and did everything i asked of it even when i was almost 16 stone, the thou is a big old lump and i just don't do the miles, they are just toys now.

I had a 400/4 in 1980, I was 6’2” then (strangely I still am) and I don’t remember it being too small, that said I don’t remember anything prior to Monday this week!.
I had a Suzuki 250 hustler a couple of years back, it looked like a 125 in comparison to modern stuff, I really enjoyed riding it, some commented that I looked too big for it, luckily I didn’t give a toss what others thought I looked like and carried on enjoying it :)
