CB750 / Bad Fit Silencer
« on: June 24, 2018, 01:34:30 PM »
Has anyone had problems fitting new David Silver 341 exhaust system, I hit a problem fitting these on today, the outer pipe hits the rear brake pedal pivot on the top seam and will not pass it. The pipe is fully home in the exhaust port and lining up with the rear bolt.  As it's Sunday i'm unable to query this with DS.

Project Board / Re: phil read rep/honda britain restoration

bit of a set back as i dropped my engine cases etc for blasting and painting at a company in reading, but the wait is at least six weeks. never mind, i'll plod on with the frame etc while i'm waiting.  on the plus side, i found the owner of the actual phil read TT winning bike which is incomplete, but i did touch the engine in a pervy way!!  every cloud....

I'm confused, i thought you lived in Carmarthen, but you dropped your cases off in Reading ? Is there not a company closer that can do the job ?

CB750 / Jet Needle
« on: June 21, 2018, 08:43:20 PM »
While adjusting the float hights that were way out, with the all the jet holders removed i noticed that the jet needles were sticking out of the bottom of the carb bodies at differing lengths, so some ham bone has put the needle clips into different grooves. My question is, what is the procedure to get at the needles on a K1 and what what groove should the clips be in with 120 main jets ?

I have 341's on my k1 I don't look after them as well as I should.
They have been on there for 5 years and there is no rust on them the bike is used in the rain and always long journeys. 50 miles minimum.
In that time I have removed them twice to clean them properly.
What I have noticed is the left lower pipe fills with water if the bike is stored over winter on its side stand.
Thats odd !! do you think all the pipes would collect water on the main stand ?. Do you know if there is much performance difference over K1 pipes ?

You could place a couple of low wattage garage tube heaters under the exhausts when you leave the bike in the garage, that would evaporate the internal moisture out quickly, but I think the best option is just to forget about it, they’ll probably last 15 years, you’ll be 85 with probably more to worry about than rusty exhausts 🙂

That's a sobering thought :'(.

I like the suggestion of the tube heaters, i'll look into it but i will still try the Waxoyl route, the area that rots is the silencer, do they get hot enough to burn away the Waxoyl or just melt it into a liquid state which is ok.

I've just had a eureka moment !! i have bought in the past a gallon of black Waxoyl, i intended to buy it in clear, used a bit on a car underside but it was to messy, the clear is much better. So to use it up i could thin it down considerably with thinners, the thinners will evaporate leaving a thin film of Waxoyl, what do you think ??

Yesterday i ordered a new set of silencers from David Silver, K2 version for my K1 as i would like a quieter system and i'm not concerned with the performance drop (I'm an old git of 70) and they are also a damn sight cheaper than the K1's. Has anybody who has bought a new system taken any precaution against internal corrosion? i'm contemplating pouring a quart (thats an age thing) of engine oil into each silencer, giving it a good shake around then emptying out. Does anybody see a problem with this ?

Thanks for the reply James, i'll try to bend it back into shape, beats me how it got bent in the first place.

Stripped the carb's down today to see why the K1 was running rough from idle to partial throttle. All the float levels were way out, but the main problem was number three carb main jet holder is bent, it felt odd unscrewing it (slack, tight and so on) and the needle end was taper ground to make it fit. This bike is a recent American import.
My problem is getting hold of one as David Silver doesn't seem to stock them, any ideas anyone?

CB750 / Re: Cam Chain Tensioner
« on: June 12, 2018, 08:14:55 PM »
I will once again give the workshop 40 year  old instructions:-

(1) loosen the locknut so it is free

(2) loosen the pinch bolt

(3) put weight on the kick start so that the engine is just about to turn----this puts all the slack in the rear run of the cam chain where the tensioner is

(4) whilst  holding pressure on the kick start nip up the pinch bolt then the locknut.

For this to work the tensioner needs to be working, the tensioner rod must not be burred and there must be life left in the chain.

See, no mention at all in the Haynes of any of that apart from release the lock nut and pinch bolt then retighten.
Many thanks Bryanj for your quick response.

Looking through the Haynes manual for info on how to adjust the cam chain tensioner on the 750
k1, it seems a little vague, nothing about what position for the crank, or doesn't it matter?
