CB350/400 / Re: No Vacuum on Carb#1
« on: January 11, 2021, 10:14:07 PM »
Oddly enough, I had no vac on cyl 1 doing a synch this weekend with my cheap 'red box' guages.
Reason...there was no hole in one of the extension tubes. I also thought the guage was fubar.
Other than that (there's loads of different tubes included, so no great shakes) the precision was amazingly good.

Hello Julie
I'd love to give you a definitive answer!
I had the carbs off again and took the top and bowl off.
Compressed air all over it and ran thinners through it. Did a bench synch and checked float height per your guide. Thanks...heard the term, had no idea what it was.
TrickyMicky mentioned ht leads and caps. The offending cylinder had a bit of an insulation breakdown right at the cap. Spark was fat, but guess this wasn't helping when in situ. Remade it off just in case.
Anywho, one or all of the above sorted it.
A burnt hand and a million electric shocks is a small price to pay.
Oh, and refitting the airbox. What joy!

Still a bit hesitant when blipping the throttle, but I'll have a think on that.

Really appreciate your help

It's a bittersweet moment burning the palm of your hand on a exhaust header that previously wasn't firing 8)

Thanks for the wise words everyone. I'm back on it today.
Definitely getting a spark. It got me a few times 😄
I now see that the airscrew won't stop it firing if it's close enough, so I'm not at that stage yet.
I'm quite a dab hand at taking these carbs off now.
All the best

Hi
I'm chasing a non-firing cylinder on my 350/4.
Happy with timing and suspect carb setup.
Pilot jet is clear so...
I'm going to follow the float height FAQ here and the bench-synch. Great guides.
The manual tells me the airscrew is 7/8 turn out plus/minus 3/8.
Which spans 1/2 turn all the way up to 1 1/4 turns.
I know in is richer and out is leaner, but I don't really know what I'm aiming for. Anyone got a suggestion please?
Thanks guys

Great advice. I'll give it a whirl. Thanks

Hello guys and gals
I've just  got a long-stored 350/4 running again.
Carbs cleaned, electronic ignition fitted, new plugs/filters. That kind of thing. Nothing major.

Tickover is nice, but opening the throttle and she's a little bit hesitant. Not 'snappy' like my 550.
Once all the cylinders have 'caught up', it revs out nicely. Sounds bloody lovely btw
Engine lovely and quiet so tappets/cam chain are prob ok.

Does this sound like carb balancing?

Maybe it just needs a good run, but I'm going to put on new tyres first. And wait for the rain to stop.

Thanks team

I had exactly the same. Mine was a blocked pilot jet.
I'm down the road from you if you ever think 2 heads would be better than 1.
Got a carb vac guage if you wanted to balance carbs. Happy to help.

You the man. They came out looking like they'd been 10 rounds with Mike Tyson. I see exactly what you mean. Thanks pal

The spider thing doesn't hold the bearing 🤔
Hello Nurse Julie. Thanks for the reply. Yes, I worded it badly. When I drifted out the second bearing, it came out like a bullet, so I missed it, but the spider 'retains' the spacer to the groove on the bearing inner, no? To assist with assembly, I guess.

I take it you are referring to the shoulder which the outer bearing ring fits against. I definitely would prefer the bearings being supported in the centre, thats where the clamping pressure is applied.
You've articulated my concern nicely. So the spacer is clamped tight between the two bearings inners? Drifting out the second bearing came out like a missile so I didn't see exactly how it was.
Thanks Johnny

Hello
Feels like a daft question, but I've got replacement sealed bearings for the rear wheel. Feels wrong to remove the seal just so I can clip in the spider thing to hold the spacer. Which got me thinking what the spacer does?
Both bearings press against a machined shoulder as far as I can see. I can loose-loctite the diameter reducer in position on the bigger bearing so that doesn't fall out next time I withdraw the axle.

All the best, Paul

Hello
Just checking in from Knutsford, South Manchester.
Got me a '76 cb550 recently which needed a bit of work, but running ok so far...
Shiny side up, guys
Paul
