Title: 400 wiring loom route question?
Post by: McCabe-Thiele (Ted) on March 23, 2022, 11:39:46 AM
When I purchased my 400 the wiring loom was not really fitted as such - more thrown into place.

Yesterday when I came to tidy up the area to the front left side of the petrol tank area where loom meets handlebar switch cables the mini wiring strap was all sort of wrong so I am not happy with the loom route as it is.

I looked at some schematic loom diagrams I had downloaded from the internet.  I noticed that in the diagrams it shows the main loom where it passes under the petrol tank going over the top of the left side coil - presumably to keep away from engine heat?

Can anyone confirm that this is the correct route please before I hitch the loom above the LHS coil ?

Lastly at the rear does the rear brake light switch connect to the loom by crossing the back of the rear mudguard where it connects into the loom?
Again some photos show the rear brake light switch connecting on the right hand side of the bike with the loom split forking onto the RHS cover area?

Thanks Paul If that is the correct 400 route then a small change will take place during the warm spell to move it above the coil. I was not sure I had the right model diagram.

Any idea about the brake light switch wiring route Paul I might have to tweak a bit more near the fuse box area?

That's how I have my brake light connection so that bit is okay!

Wiring loom now sits over the left coil as per the diagram this has helped with the handlebar wiring positioning - there is a metal frame clip on the left side of the frame directly behind the middle of the coil that did hold the loom.

Difficult to get a photo - what is this clip for?
It's  too far to the left to be a guide for any of the throttle cables - too far forwards for the crank vent pipe is it for the RH coil wire routing?

Hiya Ted,

The two piccies are from when I was stripping down the 400 last year, the wiring was still in bodged so I could only assume it was factory?

Anyway, it shows where the route is for the cables on the left and along the spine by the coils. Hope it helps a bit??

Hope all’s going well

I've seen better being broken Roo. Even the MC clamp is upside down.

Well thankfully she's no longer in such a poor state, it looked worse than what it was. tbh.

Well that's interesting the schematic diagram shows the loom going over the left coil whereas Roos stays under the frame thereby using the frame clip I have behind the coil.

Could it be they changed the wiring route due to heat issues from the engine?

Roos  coil wiring is like mine was at the top of the frame.

Update: I have moved my loom back again so it is using the frame clip & is under the coil unit. This move has had a positive side effect in that it pushes the whole loom slightly forwards so where it branches at the front the wiring connectors in the pod are not as inclined to protrude from the end of the cover.

There is a metal section that is shaped like the ones that carry the solenoid & flasher unit - it appears to have no real function unless there is something missing?

PS Some of the cable ties in the photo are temporary.

Looks very neat Ted. I'll bet lots of 400's have the loom under the coils. Mine was. However I have routed as per the diagram above them, let's see how it goes.

The bracket sticking out under the wiring bundle is for a speed control unit not fitted in most markets.

It would be nice to know if the schematic picture is correct maybe someone who has owned a 400 from new has the answer. When I tried mine over the coils it pulled the front of the harness where it forks closer to the  coils. That resulted in the lower wiring bundle being hard up against the coils where the plug lead fits. Standard coils might be okay. Also left a frame  wiring clip spare.

The not brilliant photo in the PDI download looks like the loom is under the coil - that's how I have ended up. (Last week late update)
