Title: Carb 069A sync....
Post by: Andy1488 on April 28, 2022, 10:50:39 AM
Ok people, this has been asked multiple times, and I already know the answer...anyway...

Block number is CB550E.. carbs fitted are 069A's.. sync usually carried out by attaching gauges to inlet headers, via four screws...correct so far.... soooo, where are my screws...I have been over the inlet headers with a fine tooth pick and there are none whatsoever.  Going off the history and the P/O, removing the choke butterflies,  I can only presume that the inlets have also been swapped...I have no idea why... so my real question is are the carbs or the inlets wrong..?
I am fully aware of how to bench sync these carbs, but I'm a bit of a perfectionist when it comes to the carbs, as I like to use gauges for a visibly accurate setup.. so how much messing is it going to be buying carbs with the vacuum ports fitted, rejetting etc or easier and cheaper to buy the correct inlet manifolds and swap them out...just answered my own question really. Whoever did these carb mods was either bored, an idiot or a complete fckwit...or all 3.

It sounds like you have the inlets from the later 550 k3, they had no take off for the vacuum pipes as the screw was on the carb itself (they were pd 46 carbs, horrible things). easiest way is buy some of the correct inlets, 500 four or 550 f/k1 k2, someone on here will probably have some for sale.

Spot on Mick. I did have some but sold them a few years ago. I should have loads of them around considering how many engines I broke but can't seem to find anymore.

Makes you wonder if the engine was a K3 to start with.

Thankfully they went with the 069 carbs and not the PD ones off the K3, that's a HUGE plus for you as the PD carbs are just awful.

I honestly have no idea..I know certain things are customised etc, when building a chop, but to remove butterflies and not being able to sync it is a bit weird to me.. like I said, bench syncing isn't a problem, I just prefere to be more accurate on the carb side..

Er, the carb sync screws are on the throttle bell crank, not the and carb inlet?

He means the adapter screw holes Phil. Those are on the inlet manifolds.

Rrrrr, the vacuum connection points….I didn’t realise some of the SOHC didn’t have them. Another school day.

Sorry for not being more descriptive..I meant the vacuum connection points on the manifold...I could always tap my own, and fit a permanent port using a m5 mig weld end and hoses caped off....just a thought.

could you make the holes right? and sync from there, or you could use one of those vacuum gauges.
put more photos of that great chopper

podrias hacer los agujeros tu verdad ? y sincronizar desde alli ?, o podrias usar uno de esos medidores de vacio .
pon mas fotos de esa chopper estupenda

Drilling and tapping the holes wouldn't be a problem.. 4, 5 or even 6mm would be fine.. using  a brass mig collar, at m4, m5 or m6 would work, as I've used this method before on the yamaha fzr1000 exups... the small brass ends fit perfectly in tight places.. I then use MORGAN vacuum gauges to sync.[attachimg=1][attachimg=2][attachimg=3][attachimg=4]

I will try and get a few proper pictures of her outside tomorrow and post them for you..👍
