Title: CB550 F3 engine rebuid
Post by: fourfive on March 06, 2023, 10:00:02 PM
Hi, just looking for a bitt of reassurance that everything is ok. I've reassembled the engine casings after replacing the primary chain and going through the gears by hand I'm noticing some backlash between the clutch shaft and the final drive shaft. Is this normal?
Thanks Ian

Did you replace the damper rubbers in the primary drive cush drive at the same time?

I didn't, they felt okay. The backlash feels like it's in the cogs of the gearbox, first and second gear not as bad as the higher gears.

Always replace the damper rubbers with a new chain or you drastically reduce it's life. What with the cost of these chains it's worthwhile making them last as long as possible.

Gearbox been apart?

As Ken said, it is a false economy not to change the rubbers.
I have a old chap in my village that has just built a 400 Four engine ( same rubbers ) and he came round with the unit and said the same thing "they look OK" . I advised him to fit new rubbers and he would see the difference once he tries to get the cover back on. After he bought some new rubber he was back again asking, how do i get the cover back on because it is so tight. Red rubber grease and a bit of elbow power. ;)

Agree with Trig and Ken. Although my Primary drive rubbers hadn’t gone marble hard, they were sufficiently worn to show a significant improvement when I installed news ones. In fact I had to check several times it’d got it right such was the force I had to use to get the two halves together.

same when I did mine, I thought they were too big at first. When new they need a bit of elbow to get the two halves together....
