Title: Engine/ Gear Box Oil Recommendation
Post by: JohnS on June 01, 2013, 03:31:58 PM
As the day to start my rebuilt engine approaches my thoughts turn to oil!
The manual recommends SAE 10W - 40 SE for normal use.
I understand that this is an old oil designation and today's designations eg API, ACEA are not directly comparable.
I would welcome advice from those in the know.
Also should I use a special oil to run the engine in or just change it after ? 500 miles.
Many thanks.

Hello John I use Halfords own brand 10 w 40 and had no issues and I would change at 500 miles  ;) cheers Mick.

As mick implies, it has just as much to do with making sure you have any oil you choose in good condition.
Noticed that they had "Carlube 10w~40" mineral oil in B&Q for about £12 the other day that would meet the original spec.
I wouldn't use a running in oil specifically but I drain into a stainless steel bowl (Ikea kitchen range) so you can have a really close look at what comes out and see if anything untoward is going on. As you've both said, run to 500 miles and replace should be fine to get you going.
