I had a similar leak on my Triumph T595. It turned out to be a minute hairline crack in the valve body. Even with soapy water if was barely bubbling. Luckily my local tyre fitter was on the ball

Out & About / Aintree short circuit
« on: May 15, 2022, 09:58:18 AM »
Went to Aintree circuit yesterday. The last time I was there was 41 years years ago. I mentioned in this forum a very exciting race at Aintree where Bob Smith was racing Gary Bryan's Triumph twin battling against a Suzuki GSX1100. As I walked into the paddock the first person I saw was Gary !  :)
Happy coincidence.
Saw this Honda in the paddock too, nice one. An excellent day all round.

Misc / Open / Re: Can someone explain a kickstarter to me?
« on: May 13, 2022, 05:13:42 PM »
In my youff, I briefly owned a Ducati 860GTS, which basically a less glamorous looking Ducati 900, same engine though. The electric start was interesting, or electric leg as we call them back in the day. Basically you pressed the button and the engine made a whirring sound and the exhaust went BOP BOP BOP BOP, but didn't actually start. The kick starter if I recall was really long and actually went under the foot peg. I'm sure it was possible when trying to kick it over to stamp your foot on the ground when your leg was fully extended. Again if I recall, I had to lean the bike over to the left to stop my foot hitting the ground when trying to kick start the beast.
In many way I wish I could develop Panther leg. I've tried to buy a Panther twice and both times have ended in failure. The first time I drove up to Scotland from Wales to find a beautiful looking Panther with a different frame number to the V5. I drew it to the attention of the owner and he suggested I could grind it off and re-stamp it. Needless to say it stayed there. Such a shame as it was gorgeous. The second Panther was owned by an imbecile. His girlfriend put it on fleabay without his knowledge! When I won the auction, I discovered it wasn't even UK registered, but in the advert she described how much fun it was to ride it up and down the hills of Yorkshire.  ::)

Done, even though I live in Wales and I think it only covers England. Hopefully Wales will follow suit.

« on: May 07, 2022, 11:37:22 AM »
I have some very exciting memories from Aintree in the late 70's early 80's. I used to know Weslake Triumph Twin legend Gary Bryan very well and often helped out where I could.
https://www.rgb-racing.com/about.html   Bob Smith who was a very well respected racer https://lovelessengineering.blogspot.com/2012/09/bob-smith.html used to ride for him.
Together the bike and man were a formidable combination, but like the Daleks, meeting a flight of stairs, Bob had one issue, he wasn't a very big bloke, so when it came to a push start race as they often did at Aintree, he often used to struggle to get the big twin to start.
One Saturday afternoon, there was bit of a showdown, between Bob and another racer Paul Iddon who was campaigning a no expense spared, highly tuned Suzuki GSX1100.
The flag dropped and off they started running, except I heard the starter motor whinning on the Suzuki (Which was supposed to be disconnected if I recall) and in an instant he was riding off to certain victory whilst Bob was still struggling to get the Triumph to start. By the time he got the bike running all the other riders were already half a lap away. Bob went after them and after a couple of laps caught up and started working his way through to the front. On the final lap he was behind the Paul on the back straight. I shouted out to Gary, what a shame he couldn't have got it started sooner, he would have won this. Gary looked at me and laughed and said he's already won it, watch and learn lad. So as Iddon started braking for the final bend before the start finish, Bob Smith swept past him, braking much much later before the  final corner. The Weslake was much less powerful than the Suzuki, but the Suzuki weighed a lot more and didn't have the brakes of the Triumph. So Bob won the race, to say I was ecstatic was an understatement! The body language was very telling after the race. As we sat in the paddock celebrating the win, he came round and said to Gary, goes well for an old twin doesn't it. But I Bet you have to stick some hours in keeping it running. Gary replied, your right. I have to rebuild at least once a year!

« on: April 30, 2022, 10:47:03 PM »
To illustrate my earlier message, this has gone live this evening. I have reported the listing, this evening 20.53 PM  so lets see how long this takes before eBay withdraws the listings.
https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/234533229665?hash=item369b451461:g:zSEAAOSw0tZibZX7

Feel free to put in a good bid for the bike of your dreams.

I should add, one day when I had nothing better to do, I played a little game of reporting the scammers and once the item was removed from the listing, see how long it took them to re-list. I saw them relisting within 20 minutes, so I reported them again and and eBay removed the listing again and within 20 minutes the scammers relisted again.
Scamming is illegal and also breaches eBay's terms and conditions, however they seem content to ignore it when it suits them. So probably the best way to foil them is to treat yourself to a large bid!

Misc / Open / eBay criminal activities
« on: April 30, 2022, 10:51:59 AM »
I have moaned to various people and to eBay themselves about criminal activity that takes place almost every day on eBay, yet they deliberately choose to do nothing about it. I rather suspect that there are criminals on the inside of eBay that permit this to happen. I just wanted to draw it to the attention of other members of this forum in case anyone here was caught out with this scam. There is a Honda CB 750 in the listing today so this would be quite close to home. https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/175261215270?hash=item28ce61ea26:g:EtUAAOSwuMtiawIJ

The scam is quite simple, basically the scammer copies lots of pictures off eBay of desirable cars, bikes, boats, other high value items. A profile is hacked into, quite often one that isn't used too often so the true owner doesn't notice. A picture is unloaded and the object of desire is given a unrealistically low price. Along with the picture there is a short description which usually gives away that it is written by a non European shall we say. The text usually specifies to get the vehicle at the price indicated, DO NOT BID directly on eBay, but to contact the seller directly on a email address which is always shown in another picture. The upshot is that you are asked to wire the money to them and they will deliver the vehicle or give you a bogus address to collect it from.
But surprise surprise there is no address or vehicle and you have suddenly thrown away hundred or thousands of pounds.
I was surprised to see two of my classic cars for sale on there one day, both parked at my home!
The give away's are:-
1. The vehicle is always too much of a bargain
2. If you look at eBay a lot like me, you will see the same pictures over and over
3. They will always ask you NOT TO BID but to contact them via email
4. If you look at what else the buyer is selling, sometimes they have listed literally hundreds of other vehicles of all types

I have challenged eBay over this scam several times and never received a reply, I actually reported this bike and several others over 2 days ago and it is still listed, which makes me suspect criminal activity from within eBay.
The sad fact is, it must work occasionally or crim types wouldn't do it.
If you want a bit of fun that will indicate that the scam is up, put a massive bid on any vehicle of your choice. I put a bid of £32,000 on a Saab 96V4 that's worth no more than £5K. Sadly I was outbid ;D
But make sure you report it.

Hope it stops anyone here getting caught out.

Welcome to the forum.
I'm something of a newbie here myself. There is a LOT of knowledge in this forum and a lot of helpful people here too.
I was going to wish you good luck with your project, but you won't need luck, just time and money, anything you'll need to know is right here!

Regards Robert

I've actually considered buying another CB400F frame and building up another bike as I will have to replace a lot of the parts on mine for cosmetic reasons. There's another way of getting rid of parts!
