Old man with hearing difficulty goes to his doctor accompanied by his wife.
Doctor says to him ‘ I need a stool sample, urine sample and semen sample’
Old boy says to his wife ‘What did he say ?
She replied ‘Leave him your underpants ‘

« on: March 01, 2023, 07:19:19 AM »
Before you start it from cold next time open the fuel cap on the tank as it may have a blocked air breather hole. The other check is the fuel on/off tap, remove it and see if it has a collapsed internal filter or part blockage. Are you using E10 fuel ? Ethanol can strip older rubber fuel lines I have replaced all of mine with Viton tubing to prevent this along with an external fuel filter to catch any debris that the fuel tap filter misses. Good luck with your problem solving.

I’ve looked at no end of rechromers who advertise, the prices they quote are expensive mostly due to the chemicals, electricity used and amount of hours to get a good result, this is not guaranteed if the original is in very poor pitted or corroded through condition. Much as I would like to have gone that route initially once cost factors are fully explored the option was to go for new. I have to say the front and rear mudguards look to be very well chromed. It is after all your call as to what you want to do.
Good luck.

Have you tried Classic Bike Shop Ltd in Redditch  Tel. no 01527454158
I recently bought a rear chrome mudguard for my 400/4, it looks every bit the same as the original Honda UK fitment.
I haven’t got rid of the original front or rear and intend to see if they will stand rechroming in the future.

Human beings like anything that ages suffer deterioration through our lifetime, some sadly are taken too soon, others last a century or more. We all have a Point A we just don’t know where our Point B is.

The conversation I had was with an engineer involved in warbird rebuilding so the comments made were by an expert in the field of aircraft refurbishment not any old joe. The CAA are more interested in originality than useability making it extremely torturous for rebuilding to take place.
In taking that route it’s a very expensive business, much the same as when you race anything, it always costs ten times as much as an ordinary road going vehicle, bikes included.
There’s making a profit and ripping the backside out of it.

Just to rub it in a bit I have a Bandai 1/12th scale Lotus 49 model in it’s original box with 3 as it’s racing number. This I believe was the Jim Clark racing designate, I also have a 1/12th scale of the gas turbine Indianapolis car in red which was part built and needs some love and attention to finish it off. Both models apparently can fetch quite a high price especially the Lotus which is very rare especially in it’s box.

Well, when it comes to rebuilding anything and I’ve done plenty you can count on it not being original because as soon as you replace an old nut and bolt or screw it is no longer ‘original’ it has been upgraded. You balance what you want to look as it did but couple it up with reliability. Especially as older parts can fail at Inopportune moments.
If you want a real uptight bunch then look no farther than the CAA or as one air bod termed them (Campaign Against Aviation ) as they expect a 70 year old aircraft part to be replaced with another 70 year old part, now to me that’s putting the craft and those in it at high risk.
Personally I’d go for rebuild with upgrade than putting an article back together with fatigued parts just so you can call it totally original.

In all my years of motoring this is the first catastrophic failure of a Conrod I’ve ever had, our old girl had covered 180,000 miles with all original running gear, regularly serviced by me at 10,000 mile intervals with Synthetic 10/40 oil along with filters.
Complete piston is up in the bore along with the portion of conrod which snapped about an inch below the small end. If I’d ragged the old girl then I’d expect retribution but she’s always been treated properly. Just pure bad luck which I will have to suck up.
The replacement is. 2010 Kia Picanto with 23,000 genuine miles but as I only need a small car it’ll do me fine.

Well it’s been a little while but leading up to Christmas and buying pressies sending cards along with general goodwill to all, the inevitable upset has occurred, our old faithful Seat Toledo was being driven by me for it’s MOT, just coming out of the 40 limit and beginning to accelerate when ‘Bang’ engine onto 3 cylinders with coasting into nearby side road. Looked under bonnet and black oil everywhere. Towed her home and removed sump which had hole in it front and rear to find No.3 conrod snapped an inch below the gudgeon pin and Conrod looking like an S. Being 2003 she is scrap only, had to fork out for another car which at this time of year me and everyone gets an orange and nothing else. Happy Christmas to all, enjoy the festivities. I have included piccys of damage  The 400/4 rebuild is on back burner at the moment

The Me handicap in me wanted to find out what had failed in our Seat Toledo, eventually managed to get the sump off to find hole in the front and another three timed bigger in the rear. Once off I could see No 3 conrod was at an angle. Saw that it had snapped just below the piston skirt and had bent up between the crankshaft webs, really upset Mrs CDMonte as we’ve had Roxy from new in 2003. So it looks as though Auto Salvagers will be picking her up.

Aside from checking and cleaning the bullet connectors check the wire soldered to them, if it has a green tinge suspect it to be causing your problem as it will have high resistance. All the earth points need checking, including the one under the petrol tank which is usually overlooked as it is unseen for the most part

Agreed she’s been reliable in all the time we’ve had her, I can only think metal fatigue as she was regularly serviced by me,always checked levels before going anywhere and never had any journey mishaps. Pure bad luck😞

Seat Toledo 1.9tdi 110 ps, we had her from new in 2003, when I took the engine cover off and peered through all the oil I saw broken ally in the undertray. With high powered light and mirror there’s a great big hole in the front of the sump. I think a big end has given up so it’s terminal as the old girl isn’t worth much money wise. We’ll be sad to see her go
