CB350/400 / Starting to wonder about this bike.....
« on: April 03, 2023, 08:23:32 PM »
After resolving my previous cold start issues, today I finally rode my 400/4 for the first time seeing as it was a glorious sunny day on the Moray coast.
Now, I'm not a small chap (around 18st 6) so I never expected any spectacular performance, but it actually surprised me. Not with the speed or acceleration (never went over 60 and I was using a lot of throttle to maintain that speed into a light breeze), but how solid and planted it feels. It corners very nicely indeed, it's surefooted, stable and not upset by road surface changes etc. The highest praise I can give it, it's like a smaller, lighter version of my triumph Thunderbird Sport 900.
There's a minor adjustment required to the clutch, I think I may have taken just a little too much free play out at the adjustment under the engine cover as it wants to slip slightly when changing gear quickly and winding the power on.  BUT........

Slowed to 20mph in a village, started running rough. Into 30 limit, open the throttle a touch and it clears itself. F8&%£"g carb flooding!!  It's had new float needles and seats, float heights set (making sure the floats themselves are level), a filter in the line from the tank, clean fuel, and it's sat running on the bike lift for over two hours with no issues whatsoever. First time out, it floods one of the carbs! Stay over 30mph, it's fine. Slow down below 30 and it does it every time! Maybe it's trying to tell me something.......

CB350/400 / CB400/4, bracketry under fuel tank
« on: March 21, 2023, 10:59:09 AM »
Hi folks, on to my next puzzle of "how the previous owner didn't put things together correctly...."

Can anyone help with photos of how the wiring harness is secured and properly routed on the nearside of the frame above the engine, and how the clutch cable is routed and any support brackets etc on the offside?

Thanks.

CB350/400 / Really bad cold starting. Ign or fuel?
« on: February 22, 2023, 08:30:02 PM »
Hi folks.  My CB400F2 is giving me grief. When I bought it last year, it was a poor starter but I figured a good service and some new plugs etc would sort it out, how wrong was I!

So far, I've checked the valve clearances, ignition timing, removed the carbs and given them a full overhaul, fitted NGK Iridium plugs, new air filter, oil change and new battery. The carbs were bench-synchronised so can't be that far out.

Once the engine is running and warmed up, it's really smooth and quiet and after tweaking the idle mixture screws (max adjustment about 1/4 turn from factory on one carb, 1/8 on another two) it idles beautifully. When switched off, hot, it will re-start on the button instantly.

My problem is cold starting. No amount of throttle or choke seems to have any effect, after what seems like ages cranking it, it'll fire randomly with the choke almost fully off, repeated attempts will get it to go a bit longer each time until eventually it'll pick up and run. I've tried more and less fast-idle on the adjuster, altering the idle speed screw, and every combination of throttle and choke imaginable! I get nothing at all trying to kickstart it. The carbs have been back off and re-checked, the plugs have a lovely fat spark whilst cranking and are clean....

Help, it's doing my head in!!

CB350/400 / Oil coolers
« on: December 06, 2022, 10:31:08 PM »
Evening all.
Looking to fit an oil cooler when I install my rebuilt engine. Thinking slightly out of the box (and put off by prices for a simple offtake plate!) a CB650 Nighthawk has a very similar looking oil filter housing, and also a sandwich plate feeding an oil cooler. The seal for the sandwich plate is the same part number as the 400/4, so it has to be the same diameter.....  What I can't find listed anywhere is an adapter union to attach the sandwich plate to the engine, which leaves me thinking it's simply a longer oil filter bolt, hopefully the same thread as the 400's one but just longer?
Can anyone out there confirm this, or suggest any other alternatives?
Thanks.

New Member Introductions / Hi from Kinloss, in the North of Scotland
« on: November 01, 2022, 09:39:59 PM »
Hi all, just joined.

Bought myself a 1978 CB400F a few weeks ago, finally scratching a childhood itch from when I was a spotty youth in the very early 80's. It joins my ever-expanding collection, an original unmolested 1980 Honda XL500s, a fully restored 1981 XL185s (last year's restoration project) and a 1998 Triumph Thunderbird Sport 900.

The 400 ran rough on three, stripped and cleaned the carbs and re-balanced them, she now purrs nicely on all 4 but the no.4 needs to come apart again as it started to weep fuel through the overflow today - after being perfect for almost 2 weeks! Slowly working my way through a full end-to-end check-over and service, I've already trued up the back wheel, done an oil change, new plugs and HT caps, next task is to replace the rocker cover seal as it weeps when hot. I hope to run it next year whilst I rebuild a spare engine, then strip it this time next year and have the frame blasted and powdercoated, and probably repaint to Parakeet Yellow, as the current red is for an earlier F, not the F2.

The 400 is "XRH 302S" if anyone knows any history on it, it spent quite a few years around Central Scotland, two previous owners were in Larbert and Mid-Calder areas and another previous owner to that was down in the Hull area.

Cheers.
