CB500/550 / Compress 550 Shocks with Shrouds.
« on: August 13, 2018, 10:48:58 AM »
The original shocks on my 550F perform pretty much like Zebedee on a pogo stick. I have some later shocks that perform OK, but springs have surface rust and don't have the chrome shroud. So I want to swap the good springs and shrouds to the good dampers.
Looking to buy spring compressors, but the shroud does not leave much room to compress the springs, so don't want to waste money on something that is not suitable. Anyone dismantled their shocks?

CB500/550 / CB500 Mirrors
« on: March 26, 2018, 09:51:06 AM »
Does anyone know if the CB500 K0 and K1 type mirrors were fitted to any other Hondas at that time? With particular not of the back fitting. The p/n are 323 but maybe there were others similar.

CB500/550 / Selector Fork
« on: March 19, 2018, 11:58:36 AM »
When I last had my 500k1 apart the centre selector fork showed some tell tale signs of wear. I thought the fork tips looked ok, but the wear is at the top of the arc. Never really had trouble selecting, so left it alone and all back together.
Question is, is the cure to replace the fork or does the channel in the drum wear and should that be replaced also?

CB500/550 / 500/550 Cam cover seals. Pucks.
« on: January 26, 2018, 04:00:53 PM »
What's the obvious reason (that I'm obviously missing) that the 500/550s have the 6off sealing washers top of the head/cam cover? The US call them pucks. Why not O rings as there is only a small blind space in the cam cover above and access to head nuts below.

CB500/550 / Nearly new 323 pipes.
« on: January 20, 2018, 10:51:30 AM »
Anyone after some good looking 323 pipes? Even with import, may be cheaper than DSS. Complete with brackets and couplers.

CB500/550 / Bent Fork Tubes
« on: September 27, 2017, 01:57:09 PM »
Talked earlier of my poor buy from DK. It was nothing to do with the sale as all the faults were well hidden.
But with the rocker cover that had been repaired with JB weld to the extremely worn exhaust guides to slipping starter clutch, to the dodgy cam chain guides to the slightly bent fork legs...
They run out about 3-4mm. Presume they can be straightened as the chrome is ok. Anyone use Maidstone Motoliner? Or any other suggestions.
I have a pair of old 500 forks with poor chrome and they look straight in the yokes, so think everything else is OK.

CB500/550 / CB500 carb O ring sizes
« on: September 13, 2017, 12:17:05 PM »
Anyone know the sizes of the O rings for the float bowl and main jet?
Seen a thread that suggests 68mm x 2mm for the bowl. My measurements came out at slightly less I/D. Buy in quantity and they cost <50p.
Main jet maybe 6mm x 1.5mm, but may be too fat.

CB500/550 / Chocolate Valve Guides? Strange CB500 Head?
« on: September 11, 2017, 05:05:43 PM »
As the weather is yet again grotty, I have back on doing my DK special 1978 550K. Showed 21000 ish miles and the bores seem to back up that sort of mileage and have even left most of the bottom end together as the primary chain looked OK. (surprise!) I have noticed that in general though that the finish of the bike does no compare with my 1971 500.
There have been one or two Easter Eggs, but started tidying up the head. The exhaust valve guides are absolutely shot. I’ve had 500s with double the mileage and that were near absolutely fine.  Inlet guides are ok and, by feel, I would use. Exhaust guides get progressively worse from 1-4.
On 4 valve stem is 5.43 and the guide opens up to 5.95 at the ends!
I saw on a post here trigger mention k-liners. Would they be suitable? Could probably get a drift made up to extract, but am wary of getting in too deep.

CB500/550 / O ring on countershaft output. 500/550+
« on: July 21, 2017, 10:28:41 AM »
This came up on another site.
It's part no 27 on this link

and part no 40 on this link.

This O ring is on many Hondas of the time I find...but I don't think it's on mine! just looked at a spare engine I have and can't find it. It appears to go between the double bearing on the drive side and the oil seal, or maybe just sits on the shaft behind the sprocket. Or maybe the other end of the shaft?

Can someone enlighten me and what is its purpose? Thanks

CB500/550 / Valves touching pistons
« on: March 23, 2017, 03:03:48 PM »
Took my 500k1 apart to replace the rattly primary chain and all was going well. Didn't even look at the head when I took it apart. It's been running ok but could probably do with new rings (original bore looks good) But horrified when I turned over the head and spotted the marks on the inlet valves. This bike had the top end rebuilt about 14 years ago, mainly to smarten up the appearance and since then has done about 4000 miles but ran fine and never revved near the red line. I have another old cam and the lift is the same.
Inspiration needed: Sticking valves : thin head gasket  :  Skimmed in the past?  :
Picture show 3 & 4. 1 & 2 are better but there is a witness in the carbon.

CB500/550 / 500K Transmission Bearings
« on: January 31, 2017, 11:11:44 AM »
Just about to start stripping the 500K1 down to replace a seriously flapping primary chain. Obviously cam chain at the same time.
Bike runs ok and oil pressure good, so not planning to change main or crank bearings unless I find anything.
But there is a bit of whine from somewhere when I pull away.
Should any particular bearings be replaced as a matter of course while I'm in there?
Thanks for any help, Phil

CB500/550 / Strange cam chain guide shape
« on: December 06, 2016, 03:37:21 PM »
Just stripping the top end off my 550K. The front cam chain guide does not look good at all. It appears bent to do the most damage to the chain. At the lower end it points forward and is worn through to the metal for the first 4mm. Along the middle section where the chain would normally contact the surface is mostly rough but not worn down. Any ides what caused this?
The actual tensioner blade at the rear shows very little wear at all. So at least it is cheaper than replacing this. (unless anyone has a spare?)
The bike shows just over 20k miles and am pretty sure never been apart.
Pictures show an old worn guide from a CB500 at top and the guide from the 550K at the bottom.

CB500/550 / 500/550 Pinned Rocker Shafts + a rebore question
« on: November 12, 2016, 11:47:40 AM »
I notice on my 550k that it has pinned rocker shafts. Apparently introduced after premature wear of the cylinder head cover. Strange that it only became apparent after quite a few years on manufacture of the 500/550s so may have arisen for other issues at that time.
As I have a spare cover my question is, is it really necessary and has anyone tried modifying an old cover and shafts to stop the them moving?

And while I'm here and it's ***** outside. Just measured up my spare cb500 block by positioning a ring at various points and checking gap. To sum up the bores are fine over the whole length except the final top 6-8mm of the stroke and then goes out to what I calculate as top just over the top limit 56.1. Is that normal, but presume that it's rebore time?
Thanks all
