CB350/400 / Re: Buying large amounts of parts from yamiya or impex

Walk in with a part number and ask if it can be ordered, if in uk 3 days if europe 3 weeks

I buy a lot of spares from my local dealer, HGB Motorcycles, Ruislip. If I order them before 4pm they arrive by midday the following day 👍

CB350/400 / Re: Missing Horn Stay?
« on: April 06, 2024, 09:21:10 AM »
Part numbers 11 and 19 were not fitted to the UK bikes. The UK bikes had a flat bracket holding the horn. The bracket has two rubber anti-vibration collars with metal sleeves and is attached to the frame with two long 6mm bolts that also pass through the wire hoop (item 2). The wire hoop acts as a guide for the throttle cables. The bolts also pass through the flange on the frame that in turn forms the front of the frame backbone pressing. The bolts also pass through to what is called the 'speed stay' on the l/h side. The speed stay holds the large diameter rubber boot of the wiring harness in place. The two bolts pass through from left to right so the two flanged nuts are on the horn bracket. If your bike still has the wire loop (item 2) you are very lucky as these were the first items to be lost! You can still buy them from Yamiya. Ash was able to get one for me as part of a larger order (thanks Ash👍).

CB500/550 / Re: Comstar brake shoes

I always renew brake shoes now when restoring a bike simply because you don't know when the shoes were last changed. Ratty's rear shoes are marked as Honda and show wear so as far as I know they could be the 1976 originals. Having a rear wheel lock up at speed due to de-bonding isn't a nice thought.

My High Level kit came with the barrel o-rings but the head gasket was badly marked and unusable.
It all depends on the kit you buy to what is supplied but when you get it check the head gasket is in good condition.

In addition to Ted's comments;
You will need the three o-rings for the oil gallery plugs, they are a unique size and are Honda expensive.
The Haynes manual states to renew the circlips and thrust washers on the gear shafts if the individual gears are disturbed.
Don't be tempted to re use the piston circlips!
My gasket kit did include the oil rail o-rings in the top of the cylinder head as well as the inlet manifold o-rings (4-off) and the exhaust header to head gaskets.
I re-used the 'U' shaped tensioner cushions they were fine on inspection.

Welcome to the forum.
As Ian has previoulsy mentioned what fuel were you using last summer prior to the trouble? These old bikes like only the very best in terms of fuel, i.e expensive V-Power or suchlike. If you used bog standard supermarket fuel and left it sitting for a while it will probably have gone off especially in the carb bowls making it very hard if not impossible to start the next time you want to use it.
Do you know anything about its previous history, hjad it been rebuilt at any point etc? If it had been sitting around for a while prior to you buying it the carbs could have become blocked in the pilot jet circuits.  Before taking the carbs off though go through as much of the bike as you can such as checking the plugs actually all fire and are clean (and are any sooty indicating a rich mixture. Is the choke working correctly with the correct settings? Check the ignition timing as well and if still on points check the gaps and condensors. I suspect you may be taking the carbs off to give them a good overhaul and clean in an ultrasonic bath.  It's all fun and you'll get to know the bike and they are easy to work on.
Good Luck :)

Project Board / Re: Project CB350F

Excellent progress there. The polishing mops are a brilliant piece of kit.
Trigger probably bored your barrel and mine at the same time!

CB350/400 / Re: Carb overflow tube size
« on: March 27, 2024, 11:51:56 AM »
I recently bought some from Planet Silicone on eBay in nitrile rubber. Pretty sure the OD is slightly larger than the Honda original though (for 400F)

That's the supplier I used Ash on recommendation of NJ via another thread.

CB500/550 / Re: Carb Cleaning Tips?
« on: March 26, 2024, 09:31:31 PM »
I use clock cleaning fluid on the brassware. I pour some into a jar (you have to dilute it) and leave the brassware to soak for a couple of hours. Once  rinsed I put them into the ultrasonic bath with carb cleaning fluid from Allendale.
I got the tip for clock cleaning fluid from the Repair Shop on TV and after watching an Allan Millyard video where he used it on some Z1 carbs.

That's the size I've used on my overflows. Push on fit and secured with wire clips although I didn't really need them.

Do you buy the magazine John😊. I always look at the classifieds in MCN whilst suffering the weekly shop. I don't actually buy MCN, I just look at the headlines 🤣

If it’s high, don’t worry if it’s a Honda and been serviced. Pretty much unbreakable engines

Very true especially the VFR with cam gear drive, no long cam chain thrashing around. Lots of the late model VFR750’s around at sub £2k in decent condition. These bikes have got to start increasing in value, an undervalued classic for sure.

Thanks all, great advice as always.  I am now on the horns of a dilemma between, Triumph Trident 900 and VFR800.  Will see if I can find some to try.

It's 29 years since I bought a bike and that was in boxes.  Do people allow potential buyers to test ride or is it considered a no no?

Most dealers will allow test rides, take your licence with you but private sellers normally only allow a test ride if you give them all the money on cash first (in case you drop it or ride off) and if you provide proof of insurance that you can ride any motorcycle. If a private seller arranges to meet you in a car park to carry out a sale run a mile because it's probably stolen!
