CB500/550 / How do I detect camchain wear?
« on: October 26, 2022, 09:39:46 PM »
I am aware of the tank track test for primary drive chain wear  is there a simple  test for the 500 cam chain that tells you it need replacing?

CB500/550 / Stainless Steel 500 wheel & engine spacers
« on: October 22, 2022, 12:09:01 PM »
I have just received a set of S.S. spacers from Max (amx1992) who made them specially for me using my old ones as pattern.

I previously bought some from him for  my 400 so asked Max if he could make me a set - if you PM him he might make some more!

PS I posted this without asking Max & without fear or favour.

A pretty basic question about the 500 K1 was the engine originally all painted or were the side covers polished?

CB500/550 / How do I get these out?
« on: October 18, 2022, 03:41:38 PM »
I have a couple of partly rounded off Gallery end plugs - are replacement available?
I may have to hammer a 13 mm socket onto a sloppy 14 mm fitting to get them off.

Secondly how do I get this screw out that holds the steel oil guide in place Ive given it a tap & pushed down hard but it will not budge - reluctant to use impact tool except as a last resort not sure if its a JIS PH3 or JIS PH2 end?

Managed to loose a fork clip when taking out the drum... not going as well as it was.
Might have to do a fingertip search of the garage floor as magnet trawl has not found it.

I'm walking away for today.

CB500/550 / 500 gaiters & fork ears alternatives.
« on: October 12, 2022, 10:31:01 AM »
One of my fork ears (RH) is in very poor condition being rotted inside as well as rusted & both gaiters are split.

As I was trying to get to sleep last night I wondered if as an alternative I could use a  short top seal like on a 400 instead of the gaiters that I am not that keen on visually.
An aftermarket headlamp bracket on the top of the forks might be a much cheaper/easier  way forwards as well as loking different - go for a 500 chromed headlamp bowl as per DS part.

Has anyone tried this or seen it on a cafe racer style bike?

Best if you are planning to re-paint the swing armn at the same time.

When I had my 400 swing arm powder coated I did not know that they were made of a plastic type material so left them in.
When the part came back I realised my mistake - I pushed my finger into the swing arm and they just pulled out really easily with my fore finger.

Today thought I would try to remove the same bushes on my 500 - I heated up the outside of the swing arm moving the flame of my plumbers torch as I did so to give a light all round heat of the swing arm where the bush is situated  - I then applied the heat to the outside flange of the bush with the flame licking inside it - as it started to burn on the outside I removed the heat - same for the other bush - & left it to go cold.

Poked my finger in the bush an hour later & out it came in one piece - no drama no tools.
Even the black swing arm powder coating still looks okay.

CB500/550 / Rear wheel lock ring LH threads as well as lock screws?
« on: October 08, 2022, 04:33:54 PM »
Looking at the rear hub there are a couple of screws through two of the four holes where the key removal tool would fit.

Am I right in thinking I need to remove these first before the lock ring can be removed.

Not looking forwards to trying to get the two lock screws out - I'm assuming they are normal RH threads.rear wheel lock ring by Macabe Thiele, on Flickr

I'm planning to take the frame to the powder coater coater next week if all goes to plan.

I've been puting some thought into a personalised frame colour to contrast with the existing brown tank & panels.

I've come up with RAL 8011 Gloss Nut Brown - I'm thinking it's very retro I will be interested to hear what folk here think - I'm not a purist and in 2023 Signature Gold Rims might be added to the ensemble.

It's only an idea at the moment ..............................but so was my 400 blue frame.

Misc / Open / Struggling to buy paint stripper that works.
« on: October 05, 2022, 04:03:31 PM »
I used Starchem paint stripper on my 400 casings but can't seem to be able to buy it online unless I have some sort of HSE safety certification.

Yes it's nasty stuff I wore breathing mask, eye protection, gloves and only applied it outdoors - it was scary stuff but it did a good job after my old formula Nitromors ran out.

Is there a decent brand that works for sale anywhere that a DIY person can buy today?

My e-bay purchase of Powerstrip failed.

My new formula Nitromors does nowt

CB500/550 / 500 K1 Fork Gaiters DS options ?
« on: October 05, 2022, 11:21:13 AM »
Are the DS aftermarket front fork gaiters any good @ £23.94 against £42 each?

DS do not list a genuine engine gasket set but do list genuine cylinder headgaskets what are the options please?

I've arranged for Philpots to do my front forks but was surprised that the new DS aftermaket ones are a similar price if not a tad cheaper.

Misc / Open / Is there any easier way to remove old stuck gaskets ?
« on: October 04, 2022, 03:28:44 PM »
The block gasket on my 500 is well & truly bonded  to the engine casing - is there an easy way other than a scraper with the risk of digging into the soft alluminium?

Soak block in Paraffin for a couple of days?
Steam stripper?
Paint stripping heat gun?
Driveway Jet wash gun?

I don't have a Nurse Julie who I can deligate it to.

Having studied the manual I have put a spare 400 engine mounting shaft into the end of the primary gear shaft as its the same thread. I've fitted some washers & a big thick bracket so I can make in effect a sliding hammer arrangement to pull the main shaft & bearing out.

I have the bearing part way out but the starter gear is up against the casing so I do not want to use any more force at the risk of damaging the starter ring gear?

Is there an additional trick I need to employ to stop  the starter gear striking the casing?
