Just a couple of quick questions as I've started the dismantling of my 500. I've not managed to find what I need to know on my first trawl through a CD manual.
1.) How do I disconnect the clutch cable from the hole it disappers into seemingly in the middle of the engine unit?
(its so different from the 400)
2.) To remove the engine will it come out as is or is it a sump & cam cover removal first?

I know it's cropped up before what is the standard layout for the coils & wiring as it does not appear to be handed in the wiring diagram.
Is the left coil usually for 1 & 4 cylinders using the yellow wire ?
Thus right coil is 2 & 3 cylinders using the blue wire ?

So after removing the caliper halves I saw the reason for the poor front brake - one pad has separated from its backing plate that was seized in the inside housing. Only part of one pad face was contacting the disc looking at the contac faces. The pivot was nice & free.
DS list an aftermarket pad so looking for alternatives might consider Ceranic options though I prefer a soft pad out of choice as I am not a heavy user of brakes.

Sadly my stock of brake unions & bleed nipples mostly went in the bin as they not metric. The few metric unions I have are too short.
Our local motor spares place shut after Covid - can someone sende a link or telle the size as my flaring tool is still good. Thanks.

With the current cost of re-chroming I did wonder if powder coating in chrome finish would be a reasonable alternative for none purists ?
Presumable the pitting would have to be removed somehow - I feel sure someone here will know.

I can't seem to find it but previously there was a member making the elongated top cover for the air filter on a 500. A mesh top part with rubberish surround? Can anyone point me to the post please?

My engine starts & runs without using the choke but stalls without some throttle when cold. Is there supposed to be a fast idle system as the engine does not speed up with a small amount of choke?

When I was cleaning my rear brake drum I notice three pairs of small rubber parts sticking through into the hub but nothing for the fourth pair at 3 o'clock in the photo below. Is this anything to worry about - I'm assuming its something to do with the drive cushions in the rear sprocket side ? . 500 Hub rubber bits by Macabe Thiele, on Flickr

Firstly thanks to Bryan(j) for parting with his long owned yet unrestored 500 plus a huge thank you to (Laverda)Roo for his part in delivering the bike to me here In Derby today. On the plus side it runs. I'm sure Bryan would agree it needs some restoration / tlc. I know there are several ongoing 500/550 builds but I feel the need to add my journey to the list. I will post a before photo shortly.

I'm seriously thinking of buying myself a bench polisher but am a tad overwhelmed by the many brands & specifications on the market. Is there a minimum power requirement I should look for is 370w enough? Does this look about right?. https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/274513815513As is the way I gave my last bench grinder away many years ago to someone who would use it - it was a really heavy one I bought from a garage sale.

Whilst restoring my spare set of carbs got me thinking (I know dangerous). The long brass part that I call the emulsion tube had a series of holes down the sides what do they do? I assume the fuel supply is restricted by the bottom orifice/jet plus the float level. Is it connected with atomisation perchance?
