CB350/400 / Front Axle socket 22 mm nut
« on: January 08, 2022, 05:27:28 PM »
I wanted to torque up the front axle nut - my Kamasa long reach thin walled socket set has various sizes including 21mm & 23 mm but no 22mm.
I've managed to do it using the 23mm socket but its not ideal.

Can anyone advise me as to a suitable brand of 22 mm socket that is deep enough as I do not want to buy another complete set?

CB350/400 / Motad exhuast mounting brackets on a 400/4
« on: January 01, 2022, 10:22:01 PM »
Not sure if anyone here might have a picture of the correct rear silencer bracket arrangement for the Motad system?

My bracket uses just one bolt on the rearmost frame mounting and looks a bit wrong somehow - not tried to fit it back on yet but the original fitting was under a lot of tension.

Are there any  decent off the shelf adjustable brackets available?

I have the original front pipes that are in good condition asside from the pipes being a tad rusted into the 4 into 1 part so might have to go for that and a new silencer otherwise.

CB350/400 / Small oil seal in spedo wheel hub where cable fits
« on: December 21, 2021, 11:06:14 PM »
I'm trying to find the size of the oil seal that fits down the spedo cable hole in the front hub.

The part number is not listed in the parts book & can't spot it on the DS site - I do have a number that may or may not be correct 91256-657-920?

Does anyone know the seal size please?

Misc / Open / I'm loosing my numeracy mind on valve clearances!!
« on: December 17, 2021, 04:40:54 PM »
Failing to Plan is Planning to Fail - so whislt I'm messing with my front wheel in the daytime - my mind started to wander into valve clearances come bedtime.

I've looked in the manual - it gives Inlet & Exhuast for a 400 engine as 0.05mm or 0.002 ". I haven't spotted the words Hot or Cold engine anywhere.

My feeler gauges - I have imperial & metric are probably 50 & 30 years old respectively - I can't read any numbers due to deterioration over the decades except on the never used thick ones - note to self buy replacements.

I thought okay I understand 0.002" it's two thousandths of an inch in words - I'm used to bigger gaps like 12 thousandths on a car. So 0.002" is the thickness of some medium grade paper.

Stupidly I then said to myself naaah it's got to be 20 thou surely - then I looked at the decimal and though no 20 thou is actualy 2 hundreths of an inch.

At 0.002" I'm amazed you can hear a tappet rattle at all - its close to naff all as gaps go.

Does this look suitable or will it be too wide ?

CB350/400 / Front axle potential problem?
« on: December 12, 2021, 01:11:10 PM »
I assembled the front axle today - tightened up the assembly - bearings rotate nicely all looks good except if I rotate the speedometer drive hub it feels as if its binding on the outer chrome ring that bolts on top of the drive plate. My original ring was dented so I have fitted a spare one that looks perfectly round.

I can see that the gap between the speedometer drive hub and the chrome ring is not even it feels as though it is binding.

Any pointers as to the cause I'm suspecting the axle could be slightly bent if that's at all possible - seems unlikely looking at the diameter?  Not sure how I could check it myself?

My front spindle has a flat on it to enable tightening of the axle not a hole in the end boss as per DS parts list & parts manual - is this an original fitting?

Update:- I have rotated the drive plate through 180 deg and this seems to have improved the situation substantially  - plus I assembled the spindle - nipped it up - then fitted the long bolts that hold the disc - it looks much more central now visually where the chrome ring is close to the speedo drive unit. I guess I need to fit the front wheel to see how it spins in situ.

My DS seat strap chrome fittings arrived today - they came with two sets of fittings.
1) A pair of short screws where one end screws into the other like kitchen cupboard  fastners.
2) A pair of shouldered longish JIS bolts.

My seat I do not think is original or it has been recovered - its too good for the age of the bike. The existing strap was held on with a JIS type bolts with nuts on the inside but the washers are crudely cut down by tangent & cord cuts as they were too big in diameter -both different sizes.

The parts book does not show the fittings as it list a complete seat - can anyone help with a picture or description of what is should look like on the underside of the seat please?

CB350/400 / Honda 400/4 speedometer drive lubricant question.
« on: November 29, 2021, 02:50:36 PM »
I'm in the process of obtaining new oils seals & seal ring for my speedometer drive unit in the front wheel hub. I've washed the unit out with degreaser as the old grease type lubricant that is black was in need of a change as there was some rust color in there as well.

The old grease looks like either graphite or lithium judging by its colour - any advice here as to what replacement grease is best please?

Misc / Open / Ramp safety front wheel removal advice please ?
« on: November 23, 2021, 03:34:31 PM »
Sorry to ask such a basic question but after my last centre stand close shave incident looking for the best & safest way to remove the front wheel - this is my first thought.

Today I wheeled the bike off the ramp and managed to get it back on again with the rear wheel at the clamp end (took me three attempts to get it up the ramp whilst astride the Bike). I've pulled it back on the centre stand and have the rear tyre lightly clamped. I have a strap between the front triangular engine mount and the centre stand to stop the stand from closing.

I have a removeable panel (now under front wheel)) to enable a wheel to drop down but need to safely jack up the front a bit so I can remove it. My straps do not have a ratchet system I just pull them as tight as I can.

I'm reluctant to jack up on the sump so was thinking a sturdy block of wood under each side of the lower frame with a cross piece attached via some corner brackets - then jack up close to the front of the sump area - presumably I would have to release the rear clamp so the wheel makes contact with the ramp floor - then clamp the rear wheel - am hoping this will lift the front wheel a tad so I can safely remove the cover panel.

I might be overthinking the process but do not want a  mishap - looking for best safe practice - I do not have an overhead lifting capability?

CB350/400 / Gear shift pivot play fix?
« on: November 19, 2021, 01:14:28 PM »
I've found the dot mark on the short lever but cant find much in the way of a mark on the shaft end.
My dismantling photos are not to be relied on as the shifter might not have been in the corect position.
I've got neutral - I dont even know how the gears go !

Is it one up and five down or one down and five up?

A photo of someones lever when in neutral showing the mechanism would be helpful plus the shifter sequence please?
