CB350/400 / Recommendations please
« on: August 10, 2021, 08:10:53 PM »
Hi all.

Hope you are all well.

Now cracking on with the engine break down and the cylinder head is off after lots of wd40 and a bit of patience to remove the two well rusted cylinder head nuts that sit where spark plug 2 and 3 are :)

Also I now have a firm plan of the changes I would like to do and want to do the following.

Take the engine up to 460cc with a big bore piston kit (Possibly Yoshi even though it is a tad expensive)
Fit a Yoshi stage 1 cam (again a tad expensive)
Have the head ports and flowed to suit Keihin CR 26 carbs and basically restored to as new to suit the stage 1 cam
Uprate / modify the oil pump to suit a GL1000 oil pump rotor
Do a complete rebuild of the bottom end seals bearings replace both primary and cam chains and replace any other stuff like the primary drive Cush rubbers, new clutch plates and springs etc etc
Dynatech ignition

Also planning to fit an oil cooler to ensure that the oil temperature is better controlled as all the above changes will increase the oil temp. And it looks cool too!!

Lastly (and as mentioned earlier) fit a set of Keihin CR 26 carbs. But with these I will also need to modify the bottom of the tank  for the required clearance.

Very happy to complete the engine build itself, but wondered who to trust / outsource the work to like the re-bore and head work?

Ideally would like to deal with one company rather than use one company do the re-bore, and another company to do the head work etc.

Was looking at D & M Engineering and wondered if anybody here has used them? Or if there was any other trusted recommendations for other companies / people in the UK.

Many thanks to all in advance.

Very best wishes Al.

CB350/400 / New heart for the old girl
« on: August 08, 2021, 04:22:19 PM »
Hi all

Always was planning to rebuild the engine on  my old girl as the “last piece” of the jigsaw

Trouble is it’s never a “good time” to do it with a running bike so decided to buy another engine so I can do the work without the old girl being off the road too long

So picked up this today from Ted ( many thanks again Ted)

Now it’s home and as it’s a “no rush” build going to not just do a rebuild but planning to do possible the following changes as well as a complete rebuild from the sump bolt to the top of the rocker box

Take it up to 460cc
Yoshi stage 1 cam
Get the head ported and sorted and  possibly swap to Amal smoothbores and pods

And no doubt a few other internal tweaks too as been reading you can update the oil pump to a GL1000 with a modified oil pump housing?

Once done should be a special bike with some nice additions

Lastly no doubt along the way I will be asking lots of questions but first off need to build a engine cradle so the motor will sit nicely on the bench as it a bit more heavy than the RDLC engines I have built in the past so don’t fancy it falling over

Catch up with you all soon

Best wishes Al

CB350/400 / Jet length
« on: July 23, 2021, 06:14:48 PM »
Hi all

Hope you are all well

Ok Got my 38 idle jets from Allen’s performance for my CB400F and noticed that they are slightly longer than my 40’s

I presume this is normal as just means the bottom of the jet is just deeper in the float bowl fuel level

Any advice welcome

Best wishes Al

CB350/400 / Advise
« on: July 21, 2021, 05:55:08 PM »
Hi

Need some advice pointers please

Got the old girl back on the road

Before she would not idle only run on two to three cylinders  from cold and generally run like a bag of nails unless you nailed the throttle to the stop
But after several carb rebuilds due to leaks etc and still more uneven running  (keeping the original brass wear)  she is running well to take to work every day

On cold starts and idle she sits there and tick over very smoothly but on pick up from idle it’s a little hesitant till about 2500 and then all seem ok

It’s got a Boyer ignition system coils and the other electronic bits and bobs and this is all timed correctly and done all the other checks and plugs look a little black  but not real sooty so I presume she is running a little rich

So would playing around with the air screws help or is there any other tips or tricks I could try?

Obviously the carbs are in theory 40 + years old and have 35k on them but wondered if I am missing anything obvious I need to check or adjust to improve this flat spot

Thanks in advance to all

Best wishes Al

CB350/400 / Decals
« on: May 24, 2021, 07:22:59 PM »
Hi all

Hope you are all well

Just finishing off my tank and side panel refurb

Now got a question please

Got tank and side panel decals to do next once I am 100% happy with the paint job and wondered for the tank decals do you lacquer the tank decals locally or lacquer the whole tank

Also I guess the side panels are fully lacquered due to the small size

Any advice welcome and many thanks in advance

Hi all

Hope you are all well and looking forward to summer

Just picked up this

It’s an original Mead Speed fairing for a CB400F

Alway fancied one of these since my mate had a yellow F2 fitted with one in the early 80’s

It going to be fitted most  likely next year to this old girl as currently restoring the tank and side panels back to original with a plan to finish the rebuild of the engine next winter so the bike at that point will be finished

Also with the fairing is a brand new set of ACE clip ons so looking please if anybody has a set of rear sets tucked away they would like to sell or  if anybody has any recommendations on possible rear sets suppliers

Many thanks in advance to all

Best wishes Al

Announcements / New toy

Hi all

Just bought as a nostalgia thing a CB125t as passed my test on one of these all though years ago

Bike has not been on the road in 18 years and only had two ownes with 10 k on the clock

The person selling it has replaced some stuff like exhaust and tyres but the carbs had very blocked idle jets and said they said the carb could really do with a complete strip and clean

Looks like they are a diaphragm type

So where is the best place please to buy any require service parts or service kit for these types of carb and maybe even if needed new diaphragms

Any advise welcome

Many thanks in advance

CB350/400 / Fuel tap
« on: October 30, 2020, 01:20:27 PM »
Hi all

Does anybody know if there is a repair kit to repair a fuel tank tap for the CB400F (m20 thread)

Mine does not fully shut off and £80 for a complete new tap from DSS seems a tad steep

Plenty of cheap m16 taps about on eBay but no m20 type?

Many thanks in advance

Best wishes Al

Hi all

Thought I would share my build

Sorry it’s a link to the rd site as member there too as Honda has a yellow 350lc stable mate for company plus a one off hybrid that is slowly evolving

Hope you like and will and will add some more pictures and updates as progress is made with the tank and panel restoration and engine rebuild this winter

Best wishes always Al

CB350/400 / Electronic ignition
« on: September 28, 2020, 08:30:46 PM »
Hi all

Has anyone gone over to electronic ignition for a CB400f F2 and what was the cost please

I see DS does a kit has anybody used one or did they go an alternative route ie a Daytona or Dynatec unit from eBay

Also does the Dynatec unit work with standard coils or do you need to also buy the Dynatec coils too?

Many thanks in advance

Best wishes Al

CB350/400 / Air box connection
« on: September 08, 2020, 07:12:01 PM »
Hi all

Hope you are all well

I have a question please

Just rebuilt my carbs and replaced the engine breather tube that connects to a side tube on the white plastic moulding below the air filter housing

But wondered where a hose that I guess connects to a spigot on the air box goes please as in theory the air box has a open leak if air is drawn thru this spigot rather than thru the filter?

I guess is just a drain but where please does it connect to or is it just a open pipe ??

Any advice welcome

Many thanks in advance Al
