CB350/400 / Fancy a tricked to death 400/4
« on: November 06, 2021, 11:18:11 AM »
This months Practical Sportsbike has a small but picture filled double page spread on this little cracker.
I’m not sure if there’s anything I don’t like about it. What a little screamer and fantastic execution. I can only get one photo at a time on here from my phone so I’ll do a couple of posts but this, sadly is the whole article. Enjoy

CB350/400 / Exhaust manufacturers
« on: November 01, 2021, 06:13:41 PM »
Evening all,

Anybody knpow of anyone/business except infinity exhausts in Bristol or the surrounding areas that might be able to make me a connecting tube to go from the 400/4 collector to the silencer please.  I've emailed folk to death and rang them but nobody seems to be able to follow up on an offer. Its only 6" long and I've all the orientations and measurements sorted just need somebody with a) the time and b) the kit to do it. I cant get it done here as I cant get the parts to make it or i would. Any help gratefully received.

CB500/550 / CB550 F2 1977 frame question......
« on: October 25, 2021, 10:14:17 PM »
Evening all,

As the previous owner has hacked off pretty much anything of use I have the envious task of trying to revert the frame to accepting standard foot pegs and brake levers etc etc.
Would anybody be able to send me some shots and 'dims' of where the tube needs to be welded to take the brake rod arm (the one that attaches to the pedal via the splines?)

He's hacked it off along with all the associated hanging points for the rear brake switch and wires so Im on this completely blind and the Fiche doesn't show much of any use via CMSNL.

Could I be dead cheeky and ask for diameter  of the tube, thickness of material and some reference points with which to start?

I'm not in a huge rush as still collecting parts for the build, (massive thanks to eight0 ,(Adam) who sent some goodies this morning),
I've managed to get the f/rests and brackets, headlight, torq arm, stopper rod, spring and all the associated 'gubbins' for the rear set up so just planning what I need to get to put it all as it should be again.

The front end is sorted with all the extra bits needed to do a twin disc set up, haven't looked at internals yet its purely a plan for things I can see that need sorting as it's still tucked away in the shed and I can only see the O/S. I'll look at the motor once shes out but I'm on for a full 'case refresh' and bearing replacement, if thats whats required.

I'm waiting on an air box to come from the states for the 400 and I need to find of someone who can make me a connecting tube for the exhaust and then, apart from a few bits and bobs, shes done so I'm trying to get ahead of the game ready for the dark evenings.

It's a weird thing but when I buy a new bike or project, I'm always really looking froward to a new load of information, which generally starts with a new (to me) Haynes Liar. Because the 400 on is the same as the 550, I kinda feel cheated for some reason.
 ::) ;D ;D
When I finished the Ducati and got the 400 I was really chuffed with my new 400/4 book, weird I know, might be a hoarders thing having heaps of them on the shelf in the workshop or something?  :o
I hope its not a subconscious obsession to collect the whole set, I simply dont have the money for all those projects!!!!

Apologies for the epic! ;D

Cheers

CB350/400 / Orange paint codes
« on: September 21, 2021, 06:57:36 PM »
Hi all,

would anyone happen to know what the paint code is for that really nice orange that honda did? Its probably been covered before but I'd like to start a tank for the 550 and after much discussion about colours; she likes the orange, I like the light blue. Couldn't come up with an agreement So,..... we had a good long chat about it, a fair compromise was met........ and its orange!  :o ;) ;D

I think it might even be metal flake or similar, I've only seen it in mags or on the net and presume it's a honda colour and I'm not going mad looking at a respray or similar?

NB: I quite like the orange anyway but don't tell her! ;)

Anorak's Corner / Starter motor question.....
« on: May 23, 2021, 02:57:24 PM »
Hi all, quick question, went to test the starter motor before refit and nothing and after disassembly I find this situation in the body behind the battery terminal on the housing. Are these two supposed to be together and attached to the back of the thread held in my left hand?

Not been into one of these before and a little unsure. I’ve ‘soldering fettling’ tackle so not phased just not sure on proper assembly, any advice would be more than appreciated.

Thanks in advance :)

Project Board / TWISTING FORKS, IS THIS ANORMAL THING ON THE 400/4?
« on: March 27, 2021, 11:36:26 AM »
Morning all,

I've not done one of these 400/4's before and undertaking a full build up and a bit of a swap of this and that when I pop it back together, I have a question regarding the  forks as I've not worked on these sorts of brakes before.
With all the front end assembly all built up after cleaning, stripping, drilling, (just finished the disc, easier than I thought!) and ultimately swearing, I notice that the fork leg with the calliper holder on actually rotates about 15 degrees when you twist it slightly. I presume this is the slack being taken up by the adjustable screw that dictates the setting of the fixed pad against the disc?

Is this right or have I missed something out of the build?
There's no front mudguard on the forks and I don't think I'm going to fit one but will this mean I will need some sort of fork brace to stop this twist or can this be dialled out via the adjuster screw once all together?

I'm no way 'green' at this sort of thing after building bikes for years on and off but just simply not too sure, can anybody reassure, help, suggest a fix or simply take the piss for being sausage fingers and forgetting something?

CB500/550 / Head light brackets
« on: March 23, 2021, 12:47:45 AM »
Evening all,
I'm really struggling to find a pair of the headlight brackets for a CB550 build I'm on with, does anybody have any at all, don't care how knackered just not dented, Im trying to make em fit something else and they'll end up painted or coated so finish isn't an issue just no twists or dents.

Like the ones that i cant afford from DS or CMSNL   ::)

Project Board / few bits and bobs up for grabs
« on: March 22, 2021, 01:10:09 PM »
Hi all,

after the initial strip down and the putting of various bits in various tubs for 'keeping' and tubs for  'moving on' I have finally identified some bits that are no longer required for the update of the Long Haired General's restored 400/4.
Couple of shots of the collective mound of bits no longer required, bell me if you cant see what you might be after I might have it but give me a shout.

All the bits have come off a 1977 CB400F that was parked up in 1981 so they are a bit grotty but a bit of nannying and they should come up ok. I think the thin layer of farmyard 'GAK' that covered the bike has saved a great deal but never the less a sponge and some wet n dry might be in order. I also have a front wheel complete where the hub is good, the rim, not so but if it comes up as good as the rear it shouldn't be a problem for most of you.

Not sure what stuff is worth but have a look and drop me a pm and if I can sort it I will. cheers all
