Whilst on hol in Cornwall the 400s reg/rec failed cooking the battery and blowing several bulbs luckily with only one day to go before we returned home. Not wanting to pay the thick end of £200 for another i opted for a no doubt Chinese lookee likee. This gets quite hot. Now I would expect it to get warm but no idea as to how warm, never having had reason to touch the original one when in operation. So for a couple of quid i have put a fan on it and it now works much cooler which i would think can only be a good thing.

They do tend to get quit warm in use.
My Aprilia seems to eat them as its mounted under the seat close to a twin exhaust.
Most modern bikes mount them out in open to keep them cool. So the fan can only be a good thing

cooling fan is a good idea. NC31 is a very compact piece of kit, and I don't suppose there is a lot of room under the seat or much airflow.

You would be amazed how much room there is under the seat. 2 sets of waterproof trousers, puncture outfit, tool kit, side stand puck, coil lock, disc lock, Map book, first aid kit and a cap. No doubt I will have forgotten some things. ;)

Where is the air intake?

I like it great lateral thinking- where did you source the fan is it a PC unit?

Behind right side panel down low, i have a nc31 as well, lovely little thing, still prefer the 350four though, i think my most favourite bike of all time.

They really are a nice little thing, but i must say i disagree with you and prefer the NC31 over my 350four. I am looking for a 250 Hornet now. ;)

The cavernous storage under the seat of the 400. The tool kit a bag and waterproofs fit in the tailpiece.. :D Tookit and can of chain spray in bottom for scale. I didn't have a banana handy. ;)
